I was reading this article after seeing the cover for this issue listed as #1 on their list of most iconic covers for SI and ran across this line in the story:

"When the score of the U.S.-Soviet game was announced at a high school basketball game in Athens, Ohio, the fans--many of whom had probably never seen a hockey game--stood and roared and produced dozens of miniature American flags. "

the guy who wrote the story must not have either been alive or very old in 1980. The game was played in the afternoon and was tape delayed for tv. If anyone remembers doing their best not to find out the result before the broadcast( I was lucky and avoided finding out) they will confirm that. Also if you watched the original broadcast the second period wasn't even shown as the only highlight was a Soviet goal. I think the writer should have done a little bit more homework on his story. If the result was announced the crowd probably already knew the result.

That story is the SI cover story from 1980, not a newly written story.

I'm pretty sure that the game started at 5:00 pm, which would put the ending about 730-800pm.  Considering that the game took place on a Friday, I would think a basketball game in Athens would be in the evening.  So I wouldn't go as far as to say that the crowd knew the result.

Edit: and Yep, L.C. is correct, that's actually the story from that Sports Illustrated in 1980.

Also consider that you were probably lucky to get a TV signal in Athens, Ohio in 1980.  Unless you were one of the wealthy individuals who had that new fangled 13 channel cable thingie.
