USAT says ESPN has all distribution rights for football.  Wonder what this does to TWC?

I hope it pays a lot more than the current contract, because the current one is a joke On my opinion. We get publicity and nothing else for playing weeknights in cold weather with small crowds

In a perfect world it would mean ESPN bought The TWCSN contract out (at least for FB) and the MAC can torch the pile of crap, but more likely is ESPN absorbs their rights after it expires

found this quote from another article about the new contract-

"Although the continuation of the MAC’s deal with ESPN in no way rivals the mega-TV deals of SEC, Big Ten and other major conferences, it does favorably position the MAC ahead of the other schools in the Group of Five conferences (the American, Conference USA, Mountain West, Sun Belt and MAC)."

Ahead of the rest of the G5? ESPN has the ability to be king makers, would be interesting if they turned the MAC into the highest earning G5.

Obviously, the money is very important but I think the following quote from the Plain Dealer article on this deal sums up the publicity side of it nicely....

In 2009, former Akron athletic director Mack Rhoades, who negotiated the current ESPN deal with then-commissioner Rick Chryst, said ESPN greatly valued the MAC. Unlike most conferences that have a broad regional or national membership footprint, the MAC is predominantly an Ohio-Michigan league, meaning it must find ways to be more nationally appealing for TV.

Mid-week games did that for football, as the likes of Central Michigan, Northern Illinois and Ohio University became familiar to the public. ESPN's BracketBuster, which came to an end in 2012, did that for basketball as a Kent State game was part of that TV product every year but one in its 10-year run.

http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2014/08/mid-american_conference_and_es.html

Those MACtion games have simply been huge for us. Particularly when the lockout (NBA I think) happened and we got solid play on the main ESPN station.  Timed with our success on the field, it very quickly made much of the nation aware of OHIO.

When we played Louisville last year, it was very interesting reading the USAT article about their ties with ESPN and how their program growth into a national power was closely tied to their allegiance with ESPN.

Again, the money is important but there is something to be said about the audience ESPN provides. ESPN is big-time. End of story.

I've seen crazier things happen.

ESPN could be the rich benefactor who saves mid-major football. (ESPN the benefactor wears a monocle and a houndstooth newsboy cap in my mind) The live rights bonanza in TV  could be a last minute reprieve from extinction. If they want mid-week live programming bad enough, they could ask the SEC, Big Ten and Pac 12 to throw the network a bone and keep scheduling MAC and other mid-major conferences  teams.

Just look at the local baseball TV contracts. Insane numbers for a sport that a majority of Americans find boring and slow (that group doesn't include me). Live sports are so valuable and what else can ESPN put on TV on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in November on ESPN2 that will get ANY viewers?

I think I've been wrong about mid-week games all these years. I thought they were a waste of time and hurt attendance. It's possible that the quirkiness and flexibility of these smaller conferences allow them to stay alive.

I'm not counting on it, but that could be an avenue to staving off irrelevance.

In that spirit, I'm ready for the conference to go full bizarro.

Bill Veeck style. Weird promotions. Have the officials wear orange uniforms. Mandatory spread offenses. No defensive back recruits of more than one star. Embrace talking about sports gambling and talk about the lines all over the MAC website and ESPN broadcasts. Force every stadium to sell beer. Have certain coaches become heels and others fan favorites. Even more outlandish uniforms. Have the audience vote for certain play calls via Twitter if a game gets out of hand. Outlaw punting. Have bands run out on the field during kickoffs on purpose.

I'm not even joking. Make these games events. Make them weird. Become the Burning Man of college football.

How can we work Eddie Gaedel in there?

Veeck used to sit in the center field bleachers some Sunday afternoons at Comiskey. Maybe the announcers should do play-by-play from the student section.

Actually, I'd be happy if the guys in the studio actually acknowledged the MAC game they're airing by not spending all their time discussing the P5 "game of the week," which has already been discussed ad nauseam on all the other ESPN shows.

Obviously my final opinion on the contract will hinge on financials and coverage amounts (would love to get more hoops, especially).

On the TWCSC end, I doubt a change there. ESPN has owned all football rights for quite a while. Fox Sports Ohio, STO, and now TWCSC sublicense their games for broadcast regionally from ESPN. That's why they're available online and PPV outside that area through ESPN3 and Game Plan - ESPN retains those rights. So I wouldn't expect any change there.

(Obligatory note: my views and educated guesses, not speaking for my employer or with any knowledge of situation)

CUSA teams make almost as much per year EACH as the whole MAC does total... don't act like this puts you all a leg up.

No one is impressed by empty stadiums on a Tuesday night in November.

13 years?  So the bean counters figure they can extrapolate the worth of MAC sports to ESPN based on what they currently know until my 4 year old is applying for college?

Smarter people than me.  I usually fill up my car the night before a 15 cent overnight drop.

I suppose they might have put a clause in there if the MAC drops down to FCS or whatever other contingencies that might happen to make us even less likely to be a cinderella story heading into November.

that's why its called a NEW contract. derrrr. so how about waiting to comment on the new amount when its announced?

I hear a lot of things said about MACtion but the size of the crowds is only mentioned by whiners on message boards. Everybody else has the common sense to know that small college towns in the Great Lakes region aren't going to pack outdoor stadiums on a Tuesday night in November, and they don't care. They're just happy to have college football on TV.

so whine away Whiney Whinerton, and keep telling yourself that the CUSA deal on channel Who the Hell Knows is so awesome.

p.s. you'd think with all that big time CUSA cash Marshall is swimming in you could afford proper home and away uniforms. Sheesh.

C-USA deal is such a paper tiger. Can't remember the last regular season C-USA game that I saw on TV. It is fools gold! Sure, I'd love the $$$. But at the sake of not getting on true "national" television? No thanks.

Second most fun I've ever had at an Ohio football game. Damn that was a good night.

Most fun I've ever had was 44-7.

Per Arkley's Twitter, new deal is worth over $100M over 13 years. Schools go from getting $90K per year to $650K.

That's a nice improvement.  Still not as good as CUSA or MWC.

13 years seems like a long, long time however.

Hey, at least ESPN thinks there will still be an audience for non-big 5 football.

I don't really see how this makes the conference financially secure, but it's better than nothing.

A thought: Now that we're full-on in bed with ESPN with basically "SEC-Network lite," maybe maybe maybe maybe MAYBE.....we can get College Gameday at a MAC school....QUITE POSSIBLY even at Peden????

A man needs a dream....and that would be sweet.

If our deal is really only ahalf of CUSA and MWC, and is locked in for 13 years, every person in the front office should be fired. We're going to prostitute ourselves on weeknights to make half the money as a conference with FIU, FAU, ODU and MTSU? Seriously? Oh but look, "digital streaming. ooooh" Not pleased.

A few points here on the two deals....

- CUSA deal is with Fox for primary and CBS for secondary and it pays the conference about 15 million per year.  Clearly less than we are getting paid, but when you look at the media markets....it makes some sense.  The MAC is very regional, and CUSA still has the name appeal of being bigger than the MAC.
- ESPN has much more name draw than Fox or CBS.  ESPN also takes care of their schools via SportsCenter.  When you are casually looking for sports...where do you go? Espn.
-  Digital is the trend of the future and it certainly gives the MAC great exposure throughout the year here.
-  We also don't know what ability the schools may have to produce shoulder programming(Coach Shows, Weekly Recaps).  My guess is OU will announce a deeper partnership with Evan Shaw and crew up the hill.
- Long Term is the safe bet.  Who knows what will happen in 5 years when the CUSA deal is up?  With this deal, the growth can be steady to develop the digital side of things.
-   FIU and FAU are garbage, but MTSU is a top tier mid major in major market.  ODU is on the rise and has a strong Basketball history.

In a nutshell, your argument is way off base.  CUSA is still viewed as a superior conference, Weeknights can be a good thing, and digital streaming is the future.

Another thought on this: ESPN gets distribution rights, which means not only could it put games on its networks but it also could produce a Saturday package of noon games for syndication to over-the-air TV stations, like the Big Least/AAC has done for the past decade or so.  That's a real possibility because ESPN will want to maximize its revenue, and putting MAC games on only its own cable/Internet channels probably won't get the money it wants.  If it happens, local ABC affiliates would likely get first dibs on this; currently ABC stations get only a 3:30 game except on three or four weekends a year.  But MAC games could also show up on other local stations, or even cable channels/DirecTV, as well.  That's a hell of a lot better coverage than we have now.

In addition, SI reports that "As part of the rights agreement, ESPN will work with the MAC to develop on-campus production, similar to how the SEC Network has worked to establish production capabilities at each of its member schools."  That'll be a big boost to all MAC schools.

SI also says the deal is worth "nine figures" which means that $100 million is the least it'll be.
