I think it is smart for them to move away from the UB brand to the SUNY brand. Their market appeal is going to be much broader as "New York" than as "Buffalo".

I'm 100% with you on that. People in Buffalo hate it but they're not thinking about the bigger picture. I think the re-branding makes a lot of sense.

I thought there was some kind of ruling on how far the logo could extend. I was thinking it was 35 to 35. Wasn't that an issue with our field. Does the shadow state image not count.

UB runs a lot of radio spots in the NY/NJ market during football and basketball seasons touting the fact that they are The New York area's college teams.

If I remember correctly the limitations on the center field logo are that it must be between the hashes, don't think there's a limit on length. The wet stain is well outside the hashmarks but I'm guessing they'll get around that by using a different color turf instead of painting it on as a logo.

So I actually moved out of Buffalo in March (haven't updated my location yet), but when I lived up there, the reaction of hard core Buffalo (the City) backers was somewhere between outrage and annoyed offense, WHEN THEY HAD HEARD ABOUT THE REBRANDING. Overwhelmingly, however, the first people heard about a rebranding was when I brought it up, or when they went to a UB event and saw the uniforms/basketball court. I don't know how UB is advertising this rebranding in the rest of the state (someone mentioned TV/radio adds in the NYC/NJ area), but it was NOT being advertised at all in the City of Buffalo/Erie County area.

Edited to add: My circle of friends included many City of Buffalo backers, didn't include any hardcore UB fans, just casual fans or completely indifferent to them. Ironically, almost everyone in my circle of friends was associated with UB (mostly grad students, some of who went there for undergrad, and alums)....actually, given their icy feelings toward UB due to having been students there, it might not be that ironic.

Like I said, most of the people I knew in Buffalo were fans of the city, only cared about the university in so far as it could bring positive attention to the city.

People that live in the Buffalo that don't follow UB athletics hate it and think it's anti-Buffalo. UB fans though understand it's an attempt to broaden their reach and improve their athletics and put up with it.

Most people that cover UB don't really like it but I was/am all for it. As an AD, Danny White thinks bigger picture, something many people in Buffalo sadly don't comprehend.

I don't think its accurate to say that many people in Buffalo don't comprehend the big picture just because they don't like the name change: their priority is improving the city of buffalo and its reputation, they could give two stinks about UB if it isn't accomplishing that. I don't think its unreasonable for them to feel that de-emphasizing the Buffalo in SUNY-Buffalo is anti-Buffalo (the city): yes, it may improve national recognition of SUNY, but they aren't interested unless that is directly associated with national recognition of the City of Buffalo.

For the record, I liked the City of Buffalo just fine but a pox on UB: it might not have the most suck in the MAC, but its a toss-up between them and Akron for the #2 spot. Also, my impartiality is in doubt and I therefore cannot guarantee that the bulk of this post wasn't intended to just stir the pot

I guess I just happen to think they are wrong. Frankly the University of Buffalo sounds like some city university, perhaps little better than a community college. To be honest, when I started following MAC football, that's exactly what I thought; I thought that UB was some insignificant backwater college I had never heard of.

By contrast, the State University of New York has a great academic reputation, and I have certainly heard of it. The only problem is that, with multiple campuses, that reputation gets diluted. I was aware of SUNY-Buffalo, Stoney Brook and Albany, and figured that Albany was the flagship branch, given the location. I never dreamed that SUNY-Buffalo was the same as UB, nor that it's the largest branch of SUNY (which it is).

If UB rebrands as SUNY-Buffalo, that will be much more impressive than the level of awareness they have now. That, in turn, I believe, will bring more good to the City of Buffalo that vainly insisting on calling the place UB. It also, by the way, might get UB a shot at someday getting invited all the way up to the Big Tenfinity. If they want to annex New York, which they very well might, SUNY would be a much better statewide brand than "UB" or "Syracuse".

Great move by them. They are going for a total rebranding there and it looks like it is starting to pay off. I saw an article about their new radio network and how it grew. Looks like their young gun AD is making some moves. I'm sure he will be gone in a few years, but they'll be in good shape with the revamp.

With that being said.....I think OU could use some of that cutting edge growth and vision. I love Schaus but it seems like we are a little old fashioned with our thinking at times. It'll be interesting to see if the new external guy is a yes man to Schaus or if he pushes the envelope and challenges the conventional thinking.

Just because we don't have a Twitter hastag on our field or Frank Solich isn't rowing boats doesn't mean we're not growing. Check out the staff directory...I doubt there's many MAC schools with an 8 person sales team. Or that have nearly the social media following we do. Far as I see it, most of the MAC is chasing us - not the other way around.
