He also has Maleek Irons listed as the probable starter in the backfield. This is the second preseason service (CFN being the other) that has this. Obviously the media is onto what the coaching staff thinks of this kid. I'm wondering if Frank and Co. were silently recruiting this kid trying not to let the word get out about him. As L.C. has mentioned, recruiting services didn't even know about him or barely knew. Anyway, if it turns out that he is the starter, when's the last time Ohio had a true freshman start at RB? I'm pretty sure McRae didn't. When did Mr. Basham get his first start? How quickly can a RB pick up the offense? Would they have to reduce the offense to play a freshman? Me, I like the RB group pictured well enough. Mr. Irons should wait. He might ask himself if he would trade part of a year in 2014 behind this year's line for a full RS Sr. season behind a line built around his classmates. He was their number one recruiting priority from the very beginning, and they got him. Yes, I have no doubt that the coaches were glad that the recruiting services missed the boat totally. I know that when I watched his film, my jaw about hit the desk, and  I rated him 4.5 stars, not the bottom-end 2 star rating he got from all four recruiting services. Solich's comment at the recruiting announcement was telling. If I recall, what he said was along the lines of "when I look at Maleek, I just want to feed him the ball and let him work.". I personally think Maleek will be a great running back at Ohio. I also think Papi White is going to be great, and Robbie Walker, too. For that matter, walkon AJ Ouellette looks pretty good, too, as does Trae Williams for the class of 2015.  That's a fine group of players in this class, and RB will not be a concern for years to come. That said, remember that they are just true Freshmen, and that Maleek isn't even on campus yet.  Let's give them all time to develop, and not start piling expectations on them. My personal hope is that the RB crew of Daz, Edmond, Brown, and company play well, and that all these Freshmen can have a year to redshirt and get bigger, stronger, and faster, and be ready to come in and play in 2015. There will be four years ahead where they can "feed Maleek the ball, and watch him work". It doesn't have to start in August. If it does, though, I'll be rooting for him to set some Freshman records. Bcat2 - A few points: How quickly can a RB pick up the offense? RB, in my opinion, is quite possibly one of the easiest positions to play in football. That said, the ability of a true freshman to play will be directly related to how quickly he can pick up the playbook and adjust to the speed of the game. Would they have to reduce the offense to play a freshman? Not necessarily. The biggest transition into the College level would be the passing game. It depends on how much pass protection experience he has coming out of High School. If I had to guess, probably not much judging by how successful he was at toting the rock. If Maleek can pick up the pass protection and block successfully, with his size, there is no reason why he can't be a 3-down back for the Bobcats....as long as he can hold on to the ball. I say if he is ready to play, Tim Albin will play him. They tend to be pretty loyal when it comes to upperclassmen, so starting might be a long shot at first. I do agree that if the stable of backs that they have are able to get the job done, to let him sit this year. The shelf life of a RB is very limited. The wear and tear on their bodies is ridiculous. The line this year is going to be young...I would like to see Maleek break out next year with a better line in front of him, and a solid year in a D1 strength program. I agree with all your points, Rufus, but especially the one quoted above. With Daz, Edmond, and Brown, plus Hardy, they appear to be solid at RB, and should be able to get the job done this year. Next year, with Daz and Edmond leaving, and a better line, it would be a lot better time for the young backs to get in the game, and we can see Maleek, Papi, Bo, and Dorian competing for the job.
