Former Pirates owner John Galbreath, one of the nicest people I ever met. In 1982 when I ran the scoreboard for the Columbus Clippers Mr. Galbreath came to the press box as he did not have the key for his suite at Franklin County Stadium (Cooper Stadium).  I had a master key and let him in.  We had a really nice chat and he said he had nobody to watch the game with and invited me to stay with him for the game.  Unfortunately, I had to run the scoreboard.

Not sure if this qualifies as a "Sports Father", but the entire family in particular his daughter made a huge positive impact for our sports program.

Sugar Ray?  What did I miss?

By the way, considering my win in the 1975 intramural football league, I want my Dad on this list, too.

Rob Carpenter.

Ray Leonard Jr.  was on campus in the early 90's and if I remember correctly, was on the track and football team for one season.  I remember a rumor floating around that he was going to buy the Union.

Married to Helen Mauck Galbreath, the namesake of Galbreath Chapel?

Carroll Widdoes -- his son played for Bill Hess in the late '50s or early 60s.  Can't remember the son's first name, but as I recall he played defensive end.

Thanks.  I had no idea.  Ray Sr. has to be one of the most interesting men in modern sports.  Even when he was beating the snot out of Duran, Hearns, et al, you had the feeling he'd rather be somewhere else, doing anything but boxing.  What a talent.  Smart enough to have "bought" his own management contract at an early age.   An enigma, inside a riddle, wrapped in a mystery - or however that goes.

I thought it was two years...and he didn't see any time on the field.  No?

I remember seeing his dad at games in Ypsi and Kent.

According to his online resume he "excelled" at Football and Track and field. He never did letter in football, however do believe he had a few cups of coffee on the field.

Don't forget about former Laker Head Coach, Fred Schaus.  I think most of us know who his son is.

Didn't Jim Grobe's son play on the team as a long-snapper or something?

Ben Grobe was a linebacker until he slipped walking along a brick wall late one night falling and fracturing his vertebrae.  He was airlifted to Grant hospital, he recovered but the injury ended his career.  He worked for BB&T in North Carolina for several years and has been the Assistant Director of Operations for the UNC Charlotte Football team since 2012.
