In his latest "column", he tries to stir up trouble about Ohio faking a punt last year with a 37-7 lead.

He makes no mention of whether that was called from the sidelines, which I don't believe it was.

In the same column, he tries to stir up trouble between WVU Coach Holgerson and the Marshall fan base.

He'd do well at The Post.

I've seen crazier things happen.

One of the responses says it all...

"I am so glad Landon is on Marshall's side."

If you don't want a punter running a fake on you when you're down 37-7, don't rush 10 at him and draw a roughing penalty when you're down 37-7.

He also noted that we never sacked Penn State's QB.  Interesting, considering we had a few against NMSU (whose line is probably a little more comparable to Marshall's than Penn State's.)  I wonder if it also had to do with scheme; Penn State tried to nickle and dime us a lot.  Heck, Ohio State's offensive line didn't get to Zach Dysert much because of that.

09, that's an astute thought (whether it's the reason or not).

I'm not sure the words "astute thought" belong in a thread about Chuck Landon.

Yes, that's what the stats say, yet I distinctly remember Corey Hastings dragging down the QB in the pocket. I wonder what that was called, and why it wasn't a sack? Conversely, I remember TT leaving the pocket and trying to run, but getting dragged down for a short loss, and that one I think they called a sack.

While I'm at it, I remember TT throwing the ball to Bussey against NMSU, and the ball bounced off his hands, and into the air, and they came down with it, and yet the stats show no interception. Did they call that a fumble? If so, that seems odd as Bussey never had possession, at least from my perspective.

As regards the "fake punt", if I recall correctly, they didn't bother to rush Hershey at all on that play, and there was no one between him and the yard markers, so it was pretty much automatic.

Remember how "motivated" their basketball team was after we ended their season the year before in Huntington. Of course, after that "extra" motivation played out into another home loss for the Herd they said they were looking past us.  If you need extra motivation to get the job done you've got problems.

Chuck Landon is Elton Alexander with a mullet. He's a homeless man's Terry Pluto who, if you've ever seen him in person, has an air of self-importance that even Skip Bayless would find a bit much.

As you can see, no Herd fan has rushed to this thread to defend his honor. That should tell you something.

I would defend him in a second.

They guy is writing an article based on two things.

1.  A fake punt late in a 37 to 7 game, which DID happen, regardless of the reason.

2.  Holgorson bringing up MARSHALL in an interview two weeks after we played them.

Not sure what Chuck did incorrectly here.

I was talking about defending Chuck in general. I don't think Herd fans and players needed a column today to remind us of the fake punt but its his job to stir the pot, I guess.

I am sure that I read last year that Hersey had a green light to take off when it was indicated. When the entire receiving team turns their back on the punter to run down field to set up a return that is the perfect time to run. He did as coached without specific sideline input. In hindsight should he have punted it away? Probably, but it was not that late in the game as it was in the third quarter and I'm thinking it was the early part. Afterall, the idea of offense in to hold the ball, sustain drives, and score. Who could have said the game was not in doubt mid third quarter? I guess we should have known the other team had already thrown in the towel.

I have no issue with the faked punt.  But Landon makes a valid point in his discussion.

I am of the opinion that when the game is in hand, you substitute players, but you never tell players not to try. If you line up to run a play, and the other team opts not to defend it, that is their fault, not the fault of the players running the play. The Marshall players did not defend the punt, and that's Marshall's problem. Hershey simply did what he was trained to do, so I'm not going to blame him. I'm also not going to blame Solich. I'm sure it never occurred to him when he sent Hershey out that Marshall wouldn't defend, and I think it would be unreasonable to expect him to pull Hershey aside before the punt and say "Oh, and by the way, even if they don't play defense, don't run the ball".

In any case, if you look at the box score, it is clear that Ohio was not trying to run the score up. Ohio essentially stopped passing by midway through the 3rd quarter, and Tettleton and Harden were out the entire fourth quarter.

It's a good day to be a Bobcat when we're debating if we ran up the score and if that's OK. Marshall has a lot of payback from years previous. I say we give it to them. As the Penn State motivational video said, "Welcome to the new age."

Didn't the fake punt actually help Marshall?  We kept the ball and Cato couldn't throw another INT.  If we punt there, Cato gets picked and his confidence is in the shitter even more than it was after that game and he's probably not the starter this year.  he probably transfers to Rio Grande.  Hershey was doing Marshall a favor.

Actually the very next play Boykin fumbled for a big loss, so yes, Ohio would have come out better if they had punted.

to put Hershey's punt into full context- earlier in that same drive Hershey attempted a punt and had his legs cut out from underneath him, the penalty resulted in a first down and extended the drive. You can see the sequence in the game recap video starting at 1:27, after the fake they show him running off the field shaking his head and I interpret it as him saying- if you want us to be respectful and not run up the score on you then you need to be respectful and not cut my knees off when I'm trying to give you the ball back. seems fair.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM39lYg5yes

p.s. put this one on the Herd Coaches too, nobody remembered that the year before Hersey was the holder that ran a fake field goal in for a touchdown to put Ohio up by 1 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Thanks, perimeterpost. You are probably more right than I am. In that video, Marshall did have some defenders - they didn't just give up on the play. Here's the play by play, and indeed that roughing the kicker was in the same drive.

On a side note the story was Paul Hershey had NO GREEN LIGHT and when he succesfully gained a couple 1st down's Coach Solich addressed it in team meetings that if he had not picked it up then Hershey would be paying the price..the very next time Hershey tried it I think was against Kent and he was tackled for a loss. Needless to say for the next few day's Hershey was seen at Peden running for coaches at 6am..(all second hand chatter from a former player) but interesting none the less.

That's very interesting, blitz. Perimeterpost may be right, then, that Hershey had a chip on his shoulder about being roughed.
