Brady Hoke should correct this guy and explain that Ohio is in the Big Ten and would go to the Rose Bowl.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but........isn't this impossible unless we're in the top 4? He has Notre Dame and Louisville in as At Larges ahead of us......but Louisville would (presumably) be the Big East champ and get a seat automatically--if they are getting in as an at large, they would have to be top 12 ahead of us, and they aren't going to be an "At Large" over a second B1G or ACC school that is ahead of them in the polls. And Notre Dame also would have to be ahead of us in the top 12 to be an At Large. The only true "guaranteed" spots go to the top 4, correct?

My coffee hasn't quite kicked in this morning, so maybe I'm missing something.

If Notre Dame gets in then there is no way Ohio gets in. Things would seriously have to fall apart for the Ohio to make a jump in the BCS. Our chances are already slim as is.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Notre Dame have the Big East tie in if they rank high enough? thus bumping Louisville to the #3 At Large if they are only in the Top 25?

Ok, got it. The top 12 rule only applies to non-AQ conferences, so the analysis in the original link is simply hypothesizing that we will be in the top 12 and the top ranked non-AQ conference champion. Notre Dame and Louisville's placement is irrelevant (so  long as we're in the top 12). Thanks.

Notre Dame shouldn't figure into the BCS as an at-large. If the Golden Domers are in the top8 they are in. Even if they're picked as an "at-large" it doesn't count against the non-AQ conferences. They are essentially considered a member of an AQ league for these purposes, and their selection doesn't impact the chance that OHIO (or any other non-AQ team) gets called (unless we're in the unlikely situation that two non-AQ conference champions are in the top12, in which case only the higher ranked is guaranteed a spot, and the other team would be a true at-large)

"Notre Dame will have an automatic berth if it is in the top eight of the final BCS Standings."

There is no Big East tie-in. The guy who created these bowl projections must believe that ND
finishes in the top eight of BCS, that Louisville wins the Big East (and finishes within the top 12 of BCS) and that Ohio finishes within the top 12 of BCS.

Maybe I'm confused... is this right?

OK. This is just plain nuts.

And I absolutely love it!

Orange Bowl?

I know...I know...we have to win and top 12 and blah, blah, blah....

But seeing this makes my nipples hard.

It most certainly "counts" against non-AQ schools. Notre Dame is taking away another potential spot of an at-large. Notre Dame isn't affiliated with a conference, so technically their bid will be an at-large bid. Judging from recent history we'll most likely get two SEC, two Big Ten, two Big XII, one Pac-12, one Big East, one ACC and one at large. If this season holds true, that means the Irish are getting in.

We are going to need A LOT of help in this scenario. I personally don't think Notre Dame will make it to the BCS given their schedule and can also see two PAC-12s and two ACCs that are more deserving. We'll see how it shakes out. Go unbeaten first and then we'll talk.

The "ranked in the Top 12" thing is kind of misleading because there are only 10 spots for BCS games.

The "ranked in the Top 12" thing is kind of misleading because there are only 10 spots for BCS games.

BY RULE, a top12 conference champion from a non-AQ conference (the top rated one if there is more than 1, NOT COUNTING notre dame) WILL be included in a BCS game. There are only 6/7 automatic qualifying teams: the champions of the ACC, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 12, and the SEC, as well as Notre Dame should they be ranked in the top 8. Those spots, plus the highest ranking non-AQ team are automatically in, they are not really at-large selections. The ONLY POSSIBLE WAY notre dame affects a non-AQ team's chances is if (1) there are 2 or more non-AQ-non-Notre-Dame schools ranked in the top12 OR there are 2 or more non-AQ-non-Notre-Dame schools ranked in the top16 and one AQ-conference champion is ranked lower than both of them, and (2) Notre Dame is ranked in the top 8 (they might also need to have 9 wins, can't really remember, but they're not going to get one without getting the other).

The "ranked in the Top12" thing is not misleading. There are 10 spots and no more than 7 automatically qualifying teams (counting a #8 notre dame as an AQ team). While it is theoretically possible that #11 Boise State and #12 OHIO both get into the BCS (just picking 2 random examples), it wouldn't happen. OHIO is NOT getting picked as an at-large if there is a higher ranked non-AQ conference champion. Heck, just last year #8 Boise State (who were not the MWC champion) went to the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl instead of being an at-large selection for the BCS. And that was with the winningest QB in NCAA history and having preformed superbly (and traveled well) on the BCS stage in the past. Notre Dame, who to reiterate doesn't satisify the requirement that the BCS take the highest ranked non-AQ team that is in the top12 or top16 and ranked higher than an AQ champion, making or not making the BCS has no material impact on the chances of OHIO playing in the BCS this season unless we are the highest ranked non-AQ conference championship and in the top12 (or 16). Sorry for  the repetition.

Hey you one game at a timers, take your comments to the Norfolk State game thread, this thread and other bowl prediction threads and talk of a BCS conference invite for OHIO are for Dreaming Big!

If the season ended today, who would be the Big Ten representative?  Northwestern?  The Big Ten won't be getting two in the mix if recent past results in any indication of future play.

They had three teams with 10+ wins last year, I think they'll be fine. We're only three weeks in so its hard to write off MSU, Wisconsin, Michigan and Nebraska already. Having Northwestern be this good, this early is just a bonus for them.

This. If I want to dream big, I'm going to dream big with these guys. As long as the players stay focused, that's what matters. My "one game at a time" thinking affects zero percent of the outcome on Saturdays

I remember a few years ago Uconn spent like $4 million to attend the Fiesta Bowl.  Ohio University cannot do that.  Detroit or Mobile are our best bets.

Of course, we have to win the next game first.

If they pass up a BCS bowl all arguments to drop to FCS are instantly valid.

Please do not spread misinformation. The MAC would get a huge payday out of this. When other non-AQ schools have made the BCS, I believe their conference has given them half of the revenue. In 2010, when Boise St. and TCU both made it, the Mountain West and WAC got $9.8M and $7.8M respectively. That would be more than enough to make Ohio whole if it didn't sell a ticket. I'll try to find more info on the split but let's not start an "Ohio will lose $4M" scare. Non-AQ schools have done very well with selling BCS Bowl tickets and with the revenue derived.

EDIT:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/story/201...

According to the USA Today, Boise St. posted profits of $2.8M and $1.8M respectively for the 2007 and 2010 Fiesta Bowls. The WAC gave Boise St. $3.2M of the $7.8M it received from the BCS payout in 2010.

And while UConn lost $1.7M on the 2011 Fiesta Bowl because they could only sell 2,800 tickets, they do get a split of the conference's $30M in Bowl revenue which makes them whole.

I would think that the administration would be sure to crunch the numbers several times before accepting any kind of BCS Bowl invitation...which would include how much it would cost for us to attend (flights and hotels/facilities for the team, plus buying our allotment of tickets, etc etc) compared to the payout for playing (which I know would be divided amongst the MAC, but I would hope that the MAC would allow us to recoup the money we spend to attend from the BCS money).

Somehow, I can't see how taking a BCS invitation would be a terrible thing. We likely wouldn't have to pay ALL of the costs for travel.

[EDIT]: Also, I would pay however much money they asked me to to see Ohio play in a BCS Bowl game.

Good lord, imagine Brady Hokes confusion there...

Out of the BCS bowl talk, going to the Grandaddy of them all would be... insane.  Especially if USC would end up in the title game, and we could play the Big Tendozen champion (please be Michigan in this scenerio)

Thank you for posting this Ted. Sheesh.

Only 2,800 tickets??? Wow, I'm pretty sure we had more than 2,800 in St. Louis this year for the Sweet 16 in basketball. We'd definitely beat that number if we went to the BCS.
