We already know the impact of the transfers out. What about the transfers in? With the first depth chart posted, let's take a look:

Transfers from P5 Teams:
Starters: Doggette (R-So)
Backups: Dennis (Gr), Lewis (Gr), Pugh (R-So), Tyrus (Gr), Mack (R-Jr)
Not on depth chart yet: Crawford (R-So)

Transfers from G5 Teams:
Starters: Garfield (Gr)
Backups: Collier (5th), J. Johnson (R-Jr), Walker-Burgess (Gr), Konopka (R-So)
Not on Depth Chart yet: Blankenship (R-So), Brennan (R-Fr)

Transfers from FCS:
Starters: McNaboe (Gr), Leake (Gr), Owen (Gr)
Backups: Bruno (R-Jr), D. Johnson (Gr)
Not on Depth Chart yet: Cisse (Jr)

Transfers from Division II:
Starter: Heidecker (R-Sr)
Backups: Allen (Jr), Rice (Gr)

Transfers from JUCO:
Starters: none
Backups: Rodarte (Jr), Poulus (R-Jr)
Not on Roster yet: Hale (Jr), Shumpert (Jr), Maldonado (Jr), Lemus (R-Jr)

It certainly looks like they picked well, and it doesn't seem to have mattered whether than came from P5 or Division II, or someplace in between. Every single transfer who is a Senior, 5th year, or Graduate is on the depth chart. Most transfers who are Junior or younger are not, but have plenty of time to get there.

I looked a Dennis's twitter of the highlights he posted of himself. He can flat out fly. The video makes him look like maybe one of the fastest players in the country let alone the MAC. I'm sure that there is a sample bias here but still.

Clearly not all of the "backups" will see equal playing time. I'm sure we'll see lots of PT for the backup WRs and RB, and a bit less for the backup DL players, while the backup LS may not be seen much at all, while some others may be used situationally. For example, if I recall correctly, Lewis has quite a leg, so he may be used on kickoffs and on longer FG.

The important thing, to me, is that they lost a lot of players who saw a lot of PT. They needed both starters and depth. Virtually all of the transfers appear to be in position to help the team.

All we know right now is that the players who we picked up are the best we have to put out there , it will take time, maybe multiple games, to know the impact the new players will have. I hope they all exceed people’s expectations.

Can’t believe that Dennis won’t get a shot at least KR.

Michigan players said he was the fastest player on their team.

Special teams player at the very least.

Clearly, the old days of developing talent in-house are long over. It's now a plug and play system on a year to year basis that allows one to fill perceived gaps. Of course, this can get messed up by injuries, academic and disciplinary issues, difficulties gelling with a new system and new teammates, and simply incorrectly evaluating talent. I have to think though that there is a larger margin of error for Mid-Majors, because I think we are in the market for Athletes, who are extremely talented, but who have matured enough to realize that they are not likely to fulfill the dream of eventually making it into the Pros. Therefore, other things become more important to them such as the Major they are pursuing and the appeal of the campus and community that they are living at. While the Power 5 metaphorically shank each other for a small edge in each position, while throwing money at adolescent minds like they were printing it up on the spot, I think we may find that our Bobcats might be more level headed, consistent, and talented than we think. It will be interesting to see if a sort of anti-NIL trend begins amongst athletes who are not quite in the mix for the big money, while also realizing that their roster spot is up for grabs year to year, if not game to game.

Correct. These are the known facts:
1. My list contains 29 transfers
2. Six of them are listed as starters
3. Fifteen are listed as backups
4. Eight of the transfers are younger players, not yet on the top two strings. Some of them may be on the depth chart someday, while a few may never be significant contributors
5. The depth chart includes 28 "starters", including special teams
6. Since there are multiple players listed as co-backups, there are 38 players listed as backups on the depth chart.
7. It doesn't seem to matter whether the players came down from P-5, Sideways from G-5, or up from FCS or Division II. All groups contain players who will make an impact. Players from JUCO look to have less immediate impact than the other groups.

While you are entirely correct that we can not reach any conclusions as to how good any specific transfer will be, nor as to how good overall the team will be, but there are some conclusions I have reached:
1. Seventy nine percent (22 of 28) of the starters are NOT transfers. Sixty percent of the backups (23 of 38) are NOT transfers. The bulk of the team will continue to be existing players. Even in this new portal world, continuity is still of critical importance. There are going to be large numbers of players flowing into and out of the system, but the overall system still remains the same. Recruiting of talented Freshmen and developing them into players is still essential because the bulk of the team will continue to be made up of players who come into the system as Freshmen, and who work up to be starters. In fact, since some of those who work up to starters will then transfer, player development will be more important than ever in this new world.
2. Ohio does not have huge piles of NIL money. Because of that, Ohio will never be able to buy known top stars who come in as obvious starters. Rather, Ohio can use the portal to obtain significant contributors who provide depth, and who fill areas of need. In the mix of added players, they will find a few starters, and hopefully, a few stars.
3. Ohio does seem to have accomplished this. Ohio added a Freshman class that appears to be very talented, and meanwhile, they added a pool of transfers, almost all of which seem likely to be contributors, and a few of which may turn out to be stars.
4. The demands of this new world change the demands on a coaching staff, and complicate their task tremendously. Some coaches will thrive in this new system, while many will fail. I'm guessing that we will see increased turnover in coaching staffs over the next few years, as coaches who do a good job of adapting to this new system move up to replace those who fail to prosper.

I am not going into this season expecting that this will be a great Ohio team. Rather, I expect that, if the coaching staff has done a good job of blending the new with the old, and of modifying the play calls to take advantage of the skill set of the players they have available, this will not be a terrible team, but rather a team that will have some continuity, and which improves as the season progresses, and I hope they finish strongly down the stretch. I still expect them to start the season 2-5, but I hope they don't have any crushing defeats that break their confidence in the process.

A way to look at this is that Ohio lost about 10 starters to the portal, and got about 2 starters from the portal. That would normally turn Ohio from a contender to a "rebuilding year". Yet, they also added a lot of depth, much more than would normally be there. Thus, in thinking about it, I think Ohio will be off some, but the projections of 6-8 wins in the prognosticator thread may be about right. If Ohio's depth matures by the time MAC games roll around, it might be a pretty good year when it's all over.
