Just found this on Twitter.

That hire would fill stadium, NOT RT : AD Thomas Boeh, who hired Frank Solich at Ohio, is considering him for HC at Fresno State
6 Dec

Has anyone heard the same thing? It would seem to be pure speculation.

I don't know how much it might take for Coach Solich to uproot here and make a lateral move to the left coast, but CBS says Fresno apparently has some budget problems so their funds might be limited:

http://eye-on-college-football.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/bl...

My instant reaction is that he would be crazy to do it.  Although we've had a few recruits from west of the Rockies, his recruiting strength still lies in the midwest, south and east coast.  Despite Ohio's increased profile via ESPN, he would still be largely unknown to folks out there.  Plus, given Fresno's success in the recent past, he would likely be pressured to show instant results.  I'm not saying he's not capable of that, but it's still mighty risky to give up sainthood in Athens for the unknown in Cali -- especially with all the uncertainty surrounding the WAC.  Oddly enough, the MAC and the Sun Belt are probably the most stable of the non AQ conferences.

I don't want to make any mis-statements so refresh my memory. Didn't Boeh "hire" Solich at the urging of his bosses?

I keep thinking everyone is missing the elephant in the room-assistant coach salaries.  Frank may well be satisfied to run out his career at Ohio.  At 67, he has 1 gig of 5-7 years left at the most.  The staff has been very stable, losing maybe on average around 1 per season.  I wonder if they are just satisfied where they are, are staying with Frank with the understanding that he will take a great job if offered, or are not able to find something somewhere else.  While high by most standards in the workplace, MAC coaches are near the bottom of the barrel -salary wise.   Fresno, by the way,  is going to the Mountain West where salaries are significantly higher on average and they have been less than average lately so the standard is not all that great for any new coach.

BTW, maybe Carl Pelini will reach out to someone on the staff for a Fla Atl. (?) asst.coach job.  You never know if he had a real bud in the group here or not.

Am I to take it that Boeh will offer the job to one of them, the guy will keep turning it down and Boeh will keep offering so much money that the guy will finnally take it even though he doesn't really want it?

I would be interested to see how much Boeh decides to pay the next coach. He cut Pat Hill's salary from 950k to 650k last year while signing him to a 3 year contract. At the non-AQ level I think a salary of 650,000 for the head guy in either football or basketball is pretty good money to be offering and OHIO is about there with what its offering Solich. Groce isn't making as much at the helm of the basketball team but he's a younger coach and I'd expect that if he has another NCAA season with Ohio he'll get there.

I didn't mean Frank. I meant one of the two candidates mentioned in the story.

My bad.  I had not actually read the link until now -- assumed it mentioned Frank.  Looks like this whole story was based   on one uninformed twit's tweet.

It's been reported on footballscoop that the next head coach at Fresno will be former Bobcat Defensive Coordinator Tim DeRuyter, who is the interim HC at Texas A&M.

Salary is one thing, but job stability is attractive, too. I doubt there is an assistant coach in the MAC with longer time at the same school than Germano, and few with more than guys like Gdowski, Burrows, Lightner and Albin. If instead of, say, $80,000, they get a gig for $100,000, but get fired after a year or two, and have to move again, and move their kids to another school, and another part of the country, have they really gotten a better deal?

Assistant coaches at Ohio can be reasonably confidant that they will still have this job for awhile in the future, so thus far at least, the lower salaries have been sufficient to retain good coaches.

According to their board he's bringing former Bobcat safety Nick Toth with him.

He probably figures Boeh will be gone within a year.

Including Troy Calhoun and Tim DeRuyter the Ohio Grobe staff is looking more and more impressive as time goes on.

I think Uncle Wes was projecting down the road several years, assuming Frank stays a while longer and the team continues to improve.

Frank is making 465k base. With incentives he's at 530k. Frank wins the bowl game it will be worth another 45k to him. I say he's encroaching on that 650k ballpark and I didn't at all think Fresno would be able to pay him enough to lure him away based on what they were paying Pat Hill last season. Fresno's budget last season was 26.1 million while Ohio's was 25.5 peer programs if you ask me.
