This is the final update.  This shows who as well as how many.  The bowl totals for AQ conferences include their automatic BCS bids.  We wind up with 72 bowl eligible teams, two more than needed to fill all the bowl slots.

It looks like BSU is one odd man out; it's the only 6-6 team from a non-AQ conference that isn't needed to fill bowl obligations. It looks like Western KY or WMU would be the other one, since both are 7-5.  UCLA might have turned down a bowl bid if they had gotten blown out by Oregon the way they were by USC, but since they made a half-way decent showing, they likely will go bowling.

Troy destroys Ohio in the New Orleans Bowl and disappears this season.  Was Ohio that bad, or did we catch an unlucky day where everything Troy did was as good as they could possibly play?

Did Troy lose to graduation or to injury perhaps?

NCAA has said they will most likely approve UCLA at 6-7 if they apply for a waiver. This was before getting thrashed by USC though.

Big 10 bowl picture is interesting.  10 bowl-eligible teams for 8 assured slots.  Four teams - Purdue, OSU, Northwestern, Illinois - at 6-6.

Their conference records: Purdue 4-4, OSU 3-5, NW 3-5 and Illinois 2-6.

Ron Zook fired after getting off to a 6-0 start and finishing 0-6.  Would IL accept a bowl invite?  Will OSU get a bowl ban?

Might lower tier bowls take the 9th and/or 10th Big 10 teams?

If the Bowl system is "what have you done for me lately", there's no way Illinois gets it.  Temple, at 8-4, lost to Ohio (MAC East leaders when they played) and Miami (eventual MAC champions) at the end of their season and were shut out.  Six straight losses, with no coach?  Illinois is left out.

The whole reason the NCAA took away the priority for 7-win teams over 6-6 teams is so 6-6 AQ schools could go bowling.  That's why Temps stayed home last year.  I think Illinois will get a bid somewhere, coach or no coach.

I think if Pizza were to pick Ohio, then Illinois or N'western would be the likely matchup; we have more of a recent history with them than with Purdue (I expect O$U to be the #7 Big Tedozen pick and wind up at the Ticket City Bowl in Dallas).  If they want Toledo, then Purdue is the logical choice because they play about every other year; Purdue fans have more familiarity with them and would be more likely to trek to Detroit.

I've been wondering that too!  Troy beats us like a drum and looks like world-beaters, their freshman QB looks like he'd be playing on Sundays in the not-too-distant future, only to disappear this year?  Go figure.  I do think their losing Jerrel Jernigan hurt quite a bit.

A couple of coaches ago, OUr team returned 19 or 20 starters plus the kickers from a 7-4 team and went ... 1-10. I'm neither comparing the situation to Troy knorr am I forgetting a number of injuries in 2001. I'm just sayin' ...

As for the Bowl picture: Arkansas State is a good team. So are our Ragin' Cajun friends. If the ESPN prognosticators are right and it's mashed potato time against Utah State, I'm selling all TVs and going to watch peewee ice hockey (which is not great entertainment here in Florida, BTW).

We must prove our worth against the Huskies or ...

In today's ESPN bowl predictions, both analysts project Northwestern in the Little Caesars and Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. They disagree on the opponents for each game. One picks Ohio vs. Northwestern for the LCPB, while the other selects Toledo. The same goes for the Potato Bowl...Utah State-Ohio or Utah State-Toledo.

It's pretty much unanimous - no one knows.
Ohio versus Purdue in the Pizza Pizza bowl?
Ohio versus Nevada in the Frozen Potato bowl?
Ohio versus Arkansas State in the goDaddy bowl?

I guess we'll find out in due time. In the meantime, it's time to win the MAC Championship.

Various stories I've read have cited reps from other MAC bowls saying they think the Godaddy.com will take the winner of the MAC Championship Game, but no one from that bowl actually has commented. The Blade story said Toledo is not opposed to returning to Detroit for the second year in a row. Another story quoted a Potato Bowl rep saying he would not be opposed to bringing back NIU but he does not expect to have the chance.

I think NIU has a legit argument in not wanting to go back to Boise. The Pizza Bowl would probably want Toledo back. So the question is will the MAC send Toledo to Boise and give Ohio/NIU Detroit and Mobile for winning their respective divisions? If not, then I think NIU gets Mobile, Toledo gets Detroit and Ohio gets Boise.

I'm still sticking with the original rumor of a few weeks ago -- Ohio goes to Mobile regardless of the outcome on Friday.  I have no idea where anyone else ends up.  I would guess Toledo goes to Pizza, and that NIU may go to a bowl other than the Big MAC Trio.  Sometimes those secondary MAC affiliated blows are better deals than the primary MAC bowls.  Maybe WMU or Temple goes to the Spud.

No matter what, Pizza doesn't want NIU.  They and Fiami had an announced crowd of 12,000 for the MACC last year, and Little Caesars passed them over for Toledo faster than you could say "pizza pizza."  The Detroit News says WMU will get Pizza this year, but I don't see that happening unless the MAC lines up a REALLY good bowl for Ohio and Toledo.

All I hope is that Ohio's game isn't in Idaho.  BGSu... only sent a "pep" band to the game most likely because of the cost.  If the entire 110 cannot go then none of them will go--5 million hits on youtube and the band stays home?  I don't think so.  Here's hoping the admin can lock up a game within bus distance (east of the Mississippi)

And what's the deal with all the pundits putting O$U in the Gator Bowl?  Purdue whoops em and Purdue gets a lesser bowl?  What O$U fans will travel to see this team?  And Michigan predicted to get a BCS--if they get Houston as predicted, I'll throw dollars on the Cougars to put 50pts on them with UofM's MAC calibre defense, you allow O$U and that worthless offense to score on you at home and with an acurate arm the Bucks left 3-4 TD's on the field--Houston will maul them.

They're about the only ones.  The others have either Ohio or Toledo going to Pizza and WMU, if at all, going to New Orleans or New Mexico.

The Detroit News prediction is based on the fact that the bowl has watched Western Michigan play repeatedly and has said very nice things about Carder. Obviously, Western fans would travel to that game against a Big 10 school pretty well.

If GoDaddy.com takes NIU and Little Ceasars does take WMU, maybe Ohio can swing a deal to get into the New Mexico or Kraft Fight Hunger (San Francisco) Bowl. I'd sure hope so anyway. Otherwise the Bobcats went get the raw deal with the Potato Bowl.

Would there be any chance Ohio could swing a deal to go back to the New Orleans bowl? I went down on the student deal and felt that other then the 20 hour bus trip and the outcome of the game it was a very pleasant experience and thought the fans represented pretty well in a really nice city.

I feel like the New Orleans bowl would pass us up if they have a choice due to the geographical distance.  Although if we do end up going to the GoDaddy.com Bowl (such a stupid name...), I hope the University offeres something similar for students.

According to WOUB, Ohio gets Mobile if they beat NIU and Boise if they don't.

That's sort of what a lot of articles are saying, but none of them cite an actual source. I wonder if there really is any substance to it.

You can add UCLA to the list of bowl-eligible teams. The Bruins were granted a waiver to play in a bowl game, even after they lose in the Pac-12 championship game (in whcih they are 32-point underdogs) and will finish 6-7.

By the way, this could hurt Western Michigan's bowl chances. The Broncos could be the next odd team out, depending on where the bowl openings end up.
