Completely understand all the emotion on this board, but I hope all of this will settle down quickly--especially these conspicuous new posters calling for Solich's head (are they STILL angry in NE?). My thoughts:
  • Second half sucked, no doubt.
  • Play calling was way too conservative.
  • Except for the long ball, which could have made Albin a genius or a... well we all know what happened.
  • Our players did, in fact, choke: dropped TD pass, missed FG, horrible punt, stupid PFs, poor OL play.

But even after all that, I'm still proud of what this team has accomplished. They played tough. They had yet another solid, winning season. They have continued the progression from one of the worst team's in the nation, to one of the best.

Many different MAC teams have won the championship over the years, and once Ohio finally gets over the hump, I am hoping Solich's efforts will payoff with a true, long-term contender. Not some fluke season that gets us a MACC one time for 43 more years.

No way I would call for anyone's head this morning. We have a solid coaching staff who were largely responsible for our success in even getting to the MACC. Did they make some mistakes? Absolutely. But I'd like to believe one of the differences between MAC football and the "big boys" is that we have a bit more integrity with matters like this. We are not a conference of teams that axes anyone who makes a bad football decision. That's the tradeoff for someone like Solich. If you want the huge bucks, you go for those "big boy" jobs. But all those bucks go away fast if you screw up--even once.

NIU was favored in this game from the start. Forget about the details of the game. We lost by three. Not shocking, not unpredicted, and not the end of the world.

We've got a solid team and a solid group of coaches. Let's keep this longevity train rolling. We're building a team that's built to last, a team that can overcome this loss, and a team that can recover quickly. But we, even as fans, can't be tempted by the panic button.

Thank you for this post!  I am hurting after last night's game.  I still can't believe we lost.  I am angry, stunned, sad and every other gut wrenching feeling, but I am still incredibly proud to be a Bobcat!  I am proud that Frank Solich and his staff have built a program that we can be excited about every year and that people feel the need to clal for coaches heads after a nine win regular season.

Please, everyone, get off the ledge and look at what we have accomplished.  I know it isn't everything we want, but I have so much confidence that we are going to get there because this coaching staff didn't build one good team they built a program.  Let's get the Bowl Game and a 10 win season and see you in Detroit next year!

Good post. Everyone is frustrated and upset, most of all the coaches and players. This has been a good year and the cupboard is not bare in the future. These coaches and players have been program building, and doing a pretty darn good job of it. I'm not minimizing the meltdown, but let's keep it in perspective. Win a bowl game. MAC champs next year.

I am hurting as much as any of you, but I've been trying to find perspective too. We're SO FAR from the Bryant/Lichtenberg/Knorr coaching regimes. When I was at OU in the early '90s, we had the nation's longest winless streak. I'll be happy averaging 9 wins a year.

Of course OU missed a huge opportunity, the greatest in our lifetimes, but it's unjust to turn this into a blame game. When you have a big lead, you're supposed to try to burn clock. So it was only natural to get more conservative. Meanwhile, a very good team with the league player of the year started executing, and yes, our guys got tight. Who wouldn't?

I love what Frank Solich has done for this university. If people don't like individual assistants, I don't care ... if they're Frank's guys, let them be Frank's guys. He has earned the right to pick his people and trust them. He has to approve each play call, doesn't he? I back Frank, and that means I back his assistants and his players.

Don't turn your hurt to hate. Feel for the players, and sympathize. These young men gave their all and wanted this more than any of us. Support them as they try in two weeks to do something that still would be a first for OU: winning a bowl game.

I hope beyond hope that these young men get to hoist that bowl trophy -- both to help ease the sting of last night and to earn them a spot in our university's athletic lore. This is no throwaway game coming up. It's huge for recruiting, booster support ... and the legacy of a very fun team to watch.

Go Bobcats!!!

And there you have it. Everyone should be happy and content that we have quality coaches and never question why we get our a$$e$ handed to us every damn year. We play in this crappy conference and even though we win 7,8,9 games per year, when the time comes to show we are the better team we crap the bed.

Where do you think the problem lies? We have some great talent on this team that was under utilized due to coaching decisions. Clearly Harden up the middle was not the answer.

I don't think losing on a last-second field goal is getting our a$$e$ handed to us. Last year's bowl game, sure. But not last night.

I don't think the MAC is the world's greatest conference, but I also am realistic that no one from this league has the resources to ever turn into a TCU or a Boise State. I don't see Miami or Toledo or anyone else finishing in the top 10 every year. There has been only one really special team in this league in the last 30 years -- Miami during Roethlisberger's senior season -- and it finished No. 14, I believe, and then the RedHawks returned to normalcy after he left.

I want special seasons like everyone else. And yes, I wonder why some guys aren't utilized differently. But I don't jump to conclusions. Phil Bates has played less this year than I'd hoped, but I trust there's a reason for it.

If Frank retires/leaves and we go back to 4-5 wins a year, I'll miss him. I hope people keep perspective about that.
