How the Cats stack up

Here's how the Cats compare to NIU & Toledo:

If defense wins games, the Cats have the edge. The Ohio O matches up well with either teams' D, and should be able to score 30+. But NIU and Toledo both may have trouble with Ohio's D -- especially NIU, which relies more on the run. The big issue with the Cats would be turnovers. The other teams hang onto the ball and are pretty opportunistic on D (especially Toledo). It should be a good game, whoever the opponent is.

I read in the DeKalb article that if they make it to the MACC game "they would have to be heavily favored". Your info really does not indicate that.

I believe NIU was "heavily favored" in last year's game too.

NIU generously provided Akron with their first championship in 2005. NIU leading 24-10 in the 4th, NIU loses 31-30. Wolfe runs for 270 and NIU loses.

We do pretty well against standard running back rushing, not so good(often terrible) against running QB's. NIU has the best running/throwing QB on our schedule by far. We better do something other than what we did against Temple and to some degree Miami or it's going to be a long day. I'm relatively sure we can.

That's because the oddsmakers generally don't look much past the scores. Plus NIU had bigger names on the OOC schedule: Wisconsin (9-2), Kansas (2-9) & Army (3-8). And the West is by far the better division in the MAC this year.

Harnish has passed for almost 2600 yds and is their leading rusher with over 1200 yds. If he were at an AQ school, he'd be Heissman material. In their 48-41 loss to CMU, Harnish threw for 370 yds and ran for 92. But they were only 8 of 20 on third downs, and he was sacked twice (only 7 all year) and picked twice (only 4 all year). I'm sure the coaching staff is looking at that game and the Buffalo game (NIU won 31-30 when the Buffs missed a PAT) for clues. If it's NIU, the Cats will need to dial up the passing pressure, shut down the RBs and be more aggressive in the secondary in order to limit yards after catch. It'll be a chore, but the Cats may have the best defense that NIU has seen from a MAC team this year.

All three teams can score. This game will be about whose defense steps up. I'm betting the over (provided it isn't 85) and hoping that the stingy Ohio D that showed up for Marshall shows up in Detroit.

Harnish is the MVP of the league. Eastern left a lot of points on the field with all those dropped passes.

EMU outgained NIU 289-281 and held Harnish to 9 of 19 for 98 yds. Even tho they lost, they have something to build on for next year.

Personally I think the Cats caught a break here having to go up against NIU in the championship game. Aside from losing to NIU in a shoot out Toledo proved to be a stronger team throughout the season and would of sent a ton of fans up to Detroit. Toledo has not won the West since 2004 so they've never played for a MAC Championship in Ford Field. We lucked out here.

According to their guide they have, tackle to tackle; 4 RS Sr. & 1 RS Jr., all returning starters, QB, FB, TB all Srs. Should be a war.
