Here's how the bowl picture shapes up as of 11/13.  I've included one BCS slot for each AQ conference,  The eligibles are those that have already reached bowl eligibility.  The possibles are those with no more than six losses.  The Difference column represents Eligibles plus Possibles minus Bowls.

The conferences that have met or exceeded their commitments are highlighted in green.  There are 38 teams vying for 17 slots.  13 teams have six losses: 3 CUSA; 3 MAC; 2 SEC; 1 each from MWC, Pac-12, Sun Belt, WAC and Indies.

I keep a similar database on my (home) computer. I can't refer to it from my lab computer, but I'm pretty sure a fairly high percentage of those "possible" teams will be eliminating each other (via head-to-head matchups that must push one team or the other over 7 losses) in the coming weeks. I expect that by the end of the season there will be no more than 2-3 bowl eligible teams without a home, if there are indeed enough eligible teams to fill out the bowl contracts without waivers being granted(part of that is a function of a team like USC "absorbing" wins without a chance of going bowling.)

...I'll have to check my numbers after work, see if I'm being at all accurate in what I just said.

I think its pretty safe to say Ohio will make a bowl game. The division winners are guaranteed a bowl and with 7 wins including a victory over Temple that should probably be enough even if Miami wins the division. The big question is where are we going to play and I think that is largely going to be determined by whether we can get a matchup against a BCS school somewhere. Its way too early to conclude if that is going to be a possibility for us.

Right now there are 14 teams with 6 losses, and it seems very unlikely that any of those will win 6 games.  Miami is at 4-6 so if they win out they will qualify, but how likely is that?  There are another 14 with 4-5 records.  Maybe 2-3 qualify.  Iowa State is 5-4 but play OSU, OU and Kansas State-I don't see a win in that group.  The Sun Belt may end up with an extra team (3 of their possibilities have 6 losses), and I think they have a back-up to an bowl agreement, so they may get an extra team in.  As mentioned elsewhere, Eastern must win 7 games since they have 2 FCS wins, and I think they're the only team to have that problem(Arizona State did last year and didn't qualify at 6-6).

This is going to get interesting in the future when there are less easy wins outside of conference play because of more league games required by the increased size of the AQ conferences.  And NCAA academic progress requirements may cut 1 team or two as well.

Let's face it-35 bowls are too many.  And the bowls are getting off from paying any money some of the bowls by requiring minimum ticket purchases by participating teams.  That's a racket that should be stopped.

It would definately help attendence if we got to play a AQ conference team, but not very likely is it?

I think the day of the week and geography will have the greatest effect on our bowl attendance following.  Detroit on the Tuesday after Christmas and Mobile on the second Sunday in January look the most promising.

Can the Bobcats opt out of one of the MAC tie-in games if a better bowl game is interested in the team?

I think the date was OK in New Orleans last year as was geography-even though not close proximity wise-a really good city for a bowl game., but the opponent was not (even though they ripped us).  If we had played a BCS conference team we would have had many more fans there IMO.  In Detroit, if we are there this year and play a BCSc onference team, we would get many more there than if we played Louisiana or Arkansas State there.

No doubt there are other factors that are important too.

RIght. The newness of making a bowl for this program has worn off and its now about who the opponent is in the game. It would just be huge if that first all time bowl win was against a BCS squad. Its something that will go remembered for a long time.

I don't care if we beat Little Sisters of the Poor this year, the Post is going on the wall next to my D. Washinton USA Today page. The #8 Big11012 team would be NIIIICE though.

Every week has plenty of games which complicate the eligible bowl picture-wins by Purdue, Missouri, Navy, and Boston College among others. All underdogs who won.  BC hurts NCSt. pretty bad as they have to beat Clemson to go to  a bowl.

You may already know this, but NC State and Wyoming as well as Eastern Michigan all have 2 wins against FCS teams so they all need 7 wins.

Thanks.  In addition, Hawai'i, Colorado, NMSU, Fresno St. and BYU have to win 7 because they play 13 this year (unless they win 6 against 1A schools).  That's why I'm relying on ESPN's standings, which note teams that are bowl eligible and those who cannot be.

Navy winning means they will probably finish 6-6, taking a spot away from a MAC team.

I think the at-large spots for the MAC are going to be in the New Mexico (PAC-12 places 2 in the BCS) and possibly New Orleans. CUSA is looking at possibly only 5 schools that are bowl eligible. I would be nervous if I were Temple because the possibility exists of being shut out of a bowl again with an 8-4 record.

I suggest we not look ahead and just win this week vs BG.  Then, the next week vs Miami.  just take it a game at a time, then worry about a bowl.  There could be a bunch of 4-4 teams in the east (us included).  We still just need to take care of business.  last week was good for us.  Let's hope this week is even better!

Pizza Pizza would be awesome--playing Illinois, Purdue, Northwestern or the long shot O$U.  How sweet would a victory over any of these be to cause some midwest swag vs going elsewhere to face someone not popular in these parts?  Chelis Hockey Bar, Greek Town and 3 hours from home in doors 2 days after Christmas.  Win out.

The bottom line, if I'm reading the chart right, is that the Pizza Pizza Bowl WILL have a B-1G team this year.  I think that this would be the first time since the famous CMU-Purdue shootout.

Right you are Wes on the dumbing down of the bowls.  This kind of reminds me of what I read in the Messenger today.  They listed the students who made the local high school's honor roll.  Would you believe that 3 out of 4 students did?  What ever happened to actually achieving something?  Maybe I'm just getting old like OCF and remembering when we walked to school uphill both ways in a foot of snow.

We need to win at least 1 more game to pretty much be assured of going to a bowl.  Lose 2, we don't deserve to go and probably won't.  We have beat 1 team with a winning record this year and that's all it can be before the MACC or a bowl .

Hopefully the team will focus on the remaining games.

Yep.  Even if the Big Tedozen were to land two BCS berths, Purdue and/or NWern should have at least 6 wins and allow a Big T school to make it to Motown -- either one of them or a current 6-win team (likely Illinois or Iowa; O$U might actually turn down Detroit if they're not invited elsewhere).

OHIO is pretty much assured of going to a bowl today. Not a total lock but pretty much assured. Just as we are pretty much assured of winning the East as long as we don't tank against BG and Miami. Having that win over Temple once again places us a step ahead of the Owls in the bowl selection process if we finished tied with the same amount of wins. We may clinch the division title and a bowl on Wednesday.

That match up would make it like a home game in Detroit for the Bobcats as the Wolverine Fans come out in droves to see Rufus give the beatdown to the worthless hairless nut of a mascot.

Would BTen conference rules allow for one of its members  to turn down an invite?  Oh, I forgot, that would be another way for O$U to say they are being tough on themselves by  imposing the self penalty!
