My first year here in Athens was back in '08, which is also the first year that I became a Bobcat fan. As I'm starting to crest on my 4th year here in paradise, I reflect on it and I came to the conclusion that I be in what could arguably be considered one of the greatest stretch of Bobcat athletics. Before some of you guys come for my head, just hear me out.

In my 3-1/4 years here, I have witnessed:

2009 - MAC Championship Football Game (In-person)
2009 - Pizza Bowl (In-person)
2010 - Tommy's GW 3 agaisnt Fiami (in-person)
2010 - MAC Tournament Championship as a #9 seed. (One game in person, the rest on TV)
2010 - Georgetown Upset (TV, unfortunetely)
2010 - Tennessee Game in Providence for free (In-person)
2010 - New Orleans for bowl game for $40. (Which is just silly, when you think about it)
2011 - Another MAC Championship Game (I'll be there)

Also I feel like it's worth mentioning that the first weekend I ever spent in Jeff Hall, we we're beating OSU after 3 quarters. Imagine what kind of tone it would have set if we would have pulled that off!

I have invaded and have been scolded by visiting fans at such places as Ball State, Fiami, Kent State, Akron, and Ohio State. I understand we may never have the big-time Saturday night games on ESPN with 60,000 people packed into Peden, but after witnessing what has went down in the last year at two of our closest neighbors, (OSU, PSU) I am quite content with what I've got. I don't have to pay to go to games, and I get to sit in pound-for-pound one of the rowdiest student sections in the nation. As fans, we should always strive to be as successful as possible, but let's also enjoy where we've come in the last few years. I'm not trying to start any stupid arguements, but how does this stretch compare to say the '60s?

Okay, I'm a 97 graduate, but my sister went there before me (she played lacrosse) and I've seen OHIO go a long way!

Not just in football, but in all sports. We are awesome!

Great post with excellent perspective. You are correct that you have enjoyed one of the best periods of football in the history of Ohio football. Probably the worst period in terms of losses was the ten year period prior to Jim Grobe arriving as Ohio only won 17 games those ten years.

There was not much to cheer for in terms of football during my years in Athens (81- March of 86), but the baskeball team was great and the upset of DePaul was my athletic highlight during that time.

Some of us have been posting off and on for over ten years going back to the old T-Comm board that was sponsored by the University. At times some of us (me included) have gotten pretty wound up with our comments, some of which are based on how many years we have invested in Ohio athletics. While we have gone back and forth a bit on this board, there are folks like SBH who has been very dedicated and have traveled thousand of cumulative miles supporting Ohio athletics for the past 30+ years.

I believe that Ohio is the only MAC school that was in the league my freshman year of 1981 that has never won a MAC Championship. I thought it might be interesting for us to post where we were in 1968 when the Bobcats last won the MAC.

I was five years old and still living in the Berwick area of Columbus and just made my television debut on Lucy's Toy Shop. I am sitting next (to the right) to my friend Tommy who was holding the calendar.

Great stuff, all.

Chip, I too still have great memories of a packed Convo on a cold St. Patrick's Day in 1983 when Ohio defeated DePaul. However, was it an upset? I don't remember if it was. I don't think that was one of Ray Meyer's better teams, although there was a future NBA player or two on the roster.

Edit: Typed above post during too-short lunch break and in my haste gave incorrect holiday. It was Valentine's Day, not St. Patrick's. Regardless, one of the most electric crowds at an Ohio University sporting event.

I was curious so looked it up in their media guide as I remember their 1984 team being quite good. Looks like it was Valentine's Day in 1983 when they played at the Convo. That DePaul team finished 21-12 and lost in the NIT Championship game to Fresno State. So they weren't bad. Starters were Tyrone Corbin (F), Kevin Holmes (F), Walter Downing (C), Tony Jackson (G) and Kenny Patterson (G).

The 1984 team went 27-3 and lost in the NCAA 2nd round to Wake Forest. Ray Meyer's teams were infamous for their NCAA Tourney collapses.

You are correct it was not one of Meyer's better teams and it was probably an even match-up, but it sure felt like an upset. I remember standing for hours in the cold to get a good seat. DePaul scored the first 8 or 10 points and I remember Jeff Thomas hitting the half court shot to tie the game at the half. I also remember reserve Nate Cole with the big dunk late in the game. I think the game was televised on WGN.

if memory serves, Valentine's Day in 1983 was indeed the DePaul game...St. Patrick's Day that same year was our first round win over Illinois State in the NCAA Tournament. I believe we broke out the green shoes for that one...

I can tell you were I was on May 8th that year...The Euclid Hospital (Cleveland) Maternity Ward...

I'd like to think that I was pulling for the Bobcats the day they won the MAC but my guess is that I was more concerned with the Browns...

A situation that was changed forever in September of 1986 when I moved into James Hall...

I can't speak for the 60's. But I know that for the early 90s, I could take the exact opposite of each item on your list and say I was there.

The key to continued improvement is your continued involvement.

Once the not-exactly-free ride of subsidized tickets and bowl transportation ends at graduation, we need you to join the Bobcat Club, we need you to buy season tickets, we need your presence.

I thank the OldCats for their support throughout the decades in the wilderness. I flatter myself by maintaining that the success we have today is partly due to my additional support. I will flatter today's student and maintain that with their support added to the existing base, even better things can and will happen.

36...In the Fall of 1968, I was an OHIO U student at each and every home game (until the end, I might add), some of the road games and YES (drum roll please) even at the Tangerine Bowl (what a disappointment).

What do I have to say now: GO BIG GREEN (at the Tangerine). I wonder if I still have that silly Barber Shop Quartet hat with that saying on it????

I still have my "Go Big Green at the Tangerine" button. It's about the size of a large campaign button. In my era 1962-64, 1966-68 (two years out in the middle for active duty in the US Naval Reserve) we had some very good teams. I don't have the time right now to post all the details. I may try to do that later. But, I agree that the best years of Ohio athletics are in the future. Go OHIO!

Doc, I think I remember your bedsheet-banner. Boy are you old!

But, I'm even older as I graduated in the spring of 1968 and was living in Cowtown at the time, but we tried to make it down to as many home Ohio games as we could. We even made it to some away games -- BG I remember well. A great come from behind victory (just like last night) with Old Freak Nasty and Todd Snyder supplying the excitement. My BG friend was with us, and just like last night he had an excuse. It had something to do with a pass interference call on the winning drive.

Ha....the river then ran by Sergeant Hall and it was full of the books of Freshman students who had enough and threw them off the Richland Ave. bridge.

The trailer was a mistake.....too small....too loud....and roommates who were buttheads......the move to First Street was the ticket.....great house....great location....great people.
