A solid win from the Cats.  No idea what was covered/focused on on the broadcast, or on the in game thread...A few observations from the sidelines:
  •  I would guess there was about 3,000 in the stands at the peak, like 2nd quarter.  By the end there was definitely less than 1,000.  The CMU band made 90% of the noise.  There was a decent group of students that were there early with signs about wanting JoePa, chating about wanting JoePa, then were gone by halftime.
  • It was cold, but not freezing.  The guys looked OK most of the game but appeared to lose some intensity in the 2nd half.  I don't think this crew likes the cold overall, but I doubt they're much different than any of their opponents in that regard.
  • The fumble that wasnt...And the interception that wasnt...2 of the worst calls I have ever seen.  Each time I just waited for them to reverse the call after the replay and was shocked when they didnt.
  • Ohio had their fair share of dumb penalties, but there were some very unfair personal foul calls.  They were late on the whistle, and guys were punished for playing off the ball hard all the way up to the whistle.
  • The fake FG was blown because most did not hear the call in Hershey's cadence because the band was right there blairing right up to the snap.  I think it would've worked beautifully if everyone was on the same page and I liked the call.
  • Tyler was a little off tonight with his throws, but his poise and leadership was fantastic as always.  Weather may have played a factor in it.  He overthrew Lavon once (on the uncatchable PI call), underthrew him on the bad int call, and threw behind him on another...plus a few other off throws.  But he misses safely and avoids the turnovers.  I love this kid running the O.
  • Central has terrible defense.  BB and Boykin ran the ball well, but CMU just didn't have the manpower to make any kind of stop.
  • Their freshman sensation WR had a terrible game and CMU had a lot of drops.  Overall CMU got pretty open a lot.
  • Our defense needs to work on tackling.  Too many Chips shook away when the play shouldve been over.
  • Didn't get hardly any pressure on the QB tonight, so considering that the DBs did pretty good.  Carrie/Leftwich/Moore is quite a trio to have.
  • Overall the defense needs to improve.  There are some playmakers in Keller/Carrie/Scott/etc...but there are some weak spots.  I feel like Toledo or NIU could put up 50 on us easily.  I think if we do make it to the championsip, we could put on quite a show with over 100 points combined.

Thanks for the write up. At this point the Cats are pretty much headed to Detroit and Its time to start buckling the defense down for that matchup against NIU or Toledo. The good thing is the defense has a couple more weeks to improve in advance of the MACC. Neal is due to return soon so I think that will help the Cats in the pass rush department. Solich has experience at Ford Field another feather in the cap heading into a MACC.

I wouldnt count on Neal Huynh guys..his knee was loose as a goose just 2 weeks ago and swollen like a pumpkin his ligaments have to be re-attached during the off season..why risk his senior year for 1-2 games where he wont have hardly any stability in the knee?

Thoughts from Los Angeles.  (And I have canvassed the area thoroughly, considering the millions out here who watched tonight's game and who follow the 'Cats faithfully.)

Someone posted last week that we'd be able to run on CMU.  True.

Similarly, it has been posted here that this year would be..is..all about our D-line. We'll be as good as our D-line allows.  If Huynh were to come back, our prospects brighten much.  Somewhere in the threads this week it was stated that Huynh hasn't even started practicing yet.  Add in the post above about the extent of his injury and, well, looks like no help that way this year.  The silver lining is that we have the makings of a good D-line next season.

Our receivers block.  That first TD (the Tettleton run) was courtesy of a couple of fine, fine blocks on the edge.

You tell me.  Is Skyler Allen having a pretty good year or what?

Hats off to both lines they have played lights out..there was a drop off at first with Blankenship then they slowly started opening up a can! We need Harden I believe to go ALL the way he adds that it factor to the offense and Lavon is just unfriggin real..he gets plastered then coach calls a deep ball WOW everyone at Broneys saw that coming from a mile away. We need a little more Qb pressure to help out Leftwich and Carrie..Leftwich has had a torn labrum in his hip all season so I can see he is a little stiff there..great job by him for fighting threw the injuries and not giving up.

If we get a pass rush there's no one in this league who can beat us.

Maybe I watched a different game but beyond Q1 we looked like a team that would have lost to any team except for CMU and Akron.  Very undisciplined on special teams.  Porous secondary.  Terrible tackling in the secondary. Very little pressure on CMU's QB.  Hell, if their receivers had caught half the gimme drops, we'd have been in big trouble. Team did not look focused at all.

Pretty sure I touched on every one of those points.  Some things need fixed for sure, and I still suspect this team doesn't stay focused in the cold.  But there were some positives as well, and the bad interception and fumble calls played a part in Ohio not being able to really pull away.

Luckily the MACC is played indoors.

For all the reasons we discuss on this board, winning on the road, after an emotion home win, against a very good opponent who is on top of the standings is always a difficult task.
Add to this the following facts:
1) Temple beat Miami the night before which takes some pressure off us.
2) Playing on the road
3) We have not had much success against CMU in the past few years
4) We have had a tendency to play down to our competition.
5) We are still not at full strength on the defensive side of the ball

In summary this was a good game, penalties and all.

Agreed, as I recall it, we failed to get pressure on the QB on almost every passing play (excepting the play late in the game where the pass rusher practically took the ball off their QB's hand). That being said, I didn't see us trying to bring much of a pass rush for most of the night. Frequently it looked like only the down D-linemen (and sometimes not even all of them) were trying to get pressure, that the scheme was more to keep the QB contained allowing as many players as possible to drop into coverage.

Thoughts? Discuss.

Our biggest problem is lack of pressure on QB, this putting so much pressure on our DBs and thus we are occasionally giving up big plays.  Though if we could tackle better this would minimize some of those big plays, kind of disheartening to see, especially on that one CMU touchdown.

Our offense has been pretty good, not too much you can complain about.  Last night though I really noticed some inaccuracy from Tettleton.  Seemed like our WRs were having to make a play on almost every ball he threw, need to fix that eventually.  May not hurt us too much against MAC competition but in a bowl game that could be our achilles heel next to our defensive failings.

The only thing that looked good in this game was 2nd half running between tackles and #47 tackling. Poor passing, leaky D. We still hung 43 and won by 15. One game. We have seen every facet of this team excel at one time this season. They put everything together for one game, and it is on.    Friggin ON.
