There was an article in the Post about the students leaving at half time during the Temple game. Here are a few quotes from some students that left at halftime and went uptown to the bars. None of the answers are surprising, but they are dissapointing.

Student #1-
Quote:
“I left because, to be honest, I was kind of sobering up. I just wanted to come to a bar and watch it. I figured they were doing good, and I just wanted to hang out.”

Student #2-
Quote:
“We don’t have a stadium that serves alcohol. Nippert Stadium at (the University of Cincinnati) serves beer. If we went to UC, I would be going to the football game.”

Student #3-
Quote:
“I feel like there were a lot of people who left after the halftime show. I think it was generally because it was cold outside, and I mean, that’s just kind of an OU tradition.”

Now all of those quotes could have been from me when I was an undegrad, but that was during the Lichtenberg years. C'mon, man.

+1 for honesty...could also have been true for me during the Knorr years (well, except for the "I thought they were doing good" bit, I don't recall ever feeling that way when leaving an OHIO game early)

Hmm, I wonder what percentage of those leaving at halftime (including those quoted), are actually legally old enough to drink?

They all make mine explode! It was a GREAT student crowd, but for a game of that magnitude, there's no excuse for leaving early!!!

If I had ever sobered up during a game, my head might've exploded. ;)  Maybe the answer is to let kids "sneak" the stuff into the stadium like the old days.  (Getting an ice chest into Peden wasn't that difficult.)  Or maybe give out coupons good for a free beer at a local pub at the end of the game.  I always stuck around through the 110 postgame, but I had friends in the band and needed to find out where to hook up with them later.

I feel like we have this discussion nearly every game, every year.
Honestly, as an two-time alumnus, it disgusts me to watch people leave. Have I ever left before a game ended? Sure, but not to go to a bar and not when it was a close game, especially one where there were major implications on the line.
I get it if we are playing a 1-AA team or the Ball States of the world, but when ESPN is in town, it is a blackout crowd, the team is playing well and there are major season implications on the line, I just don't get any argument for leaving.

There are a number of ways to combat this but the fact of the matter is that nothing will change until we bring a more exciting talent to Peden for OUr fans each week. Honestly, that might not even be something that is feasible.
The biggest thing we could do would be to improve the fan experience more. Stop with the stupid promotionals and advertisements during timeouts. Let the DAMN BAND PLAY! Additionally, the University and game day staff could try to create a more exciting atmosphere by trying to foster more traditions that center around fans, more fan interaction and participation. People get bored when they just stand there.

In all seriousness, the wave is the most underrated stadium activity, ever.  I know it makes me feel like a kid when I do it.  Simple things are truly more effective.  Have the old side chant "OU!" and the students respond, "OH YEAH!"

Little things.

You know, that's the thing here that worries me that our fair university may be failing in education. Wanna drink inside the stadium? Figure out a way to drink inside the stadium! It's really not that difficult to sneak alcohol into Peden if you get the least bit creative. Where is that spark of imagination and daring?

If they can't go 3 hours without drinking, sounds like they have a bigger problem. Maybe they should be going to AA meetings instead.

Oh yeah! I know that not being 21 sure inhibited my ability to  find and consume alcohol during my freshman, sophomore, and most of my junior years...hahaha

EDIT:  I should have noted that I was in school during the dark days of Brian Knorr

I think I may know people who have done this at every game at Pedan I've attended since graduation

EDIT: I think we may have all forgotten to go to the liquor store pregame this last homecoming...and that was a game that would have been greatly helped by more alcohol, at least the outcome

For me the drinking age was 18 during those years. I never missed a Northwestern game in Dyche Stadium (since renamed), nor did I leave early, nor did I drink during the game. Considering the quality of football Northwestern was playing at the time, maybe I should have, but I was perfectly happy to wait until post-game.

Exactly!  And, it's this attitude that Dr. McDavis is trying to combat with various policies.  To tell you the truth, the attitudes about alcohol expressed by some on this board are really scary.  They make it sound like half the student population are alcoholics.  Having a beer or two after the game is one thing.  Coming to the game drunk and then leaving at halftime to get more drinks is just over the top in terms of regular behavior.  We were all students once and did stupid things and probably got drunk a few times, but when it's a regular occurrence, it's a problem.  If you deny you have a problem, then you won't realize that you're an alcoholic until you "hit bottom."  I have a cousin who is involved with the local AA, and I'll have to say they do a really good job and are very supportive of their fellow recovering alcoholics.  This is a serious disease and shouldn't be taken lightly.  Sorry for the ramble, but it's high time we talk about this subject in the light of day.

Oh God, not the wave. Anything but that.

I just think there are more things that the Peden facilities personal as well as the cheerleaders could do do help keep fans in the game.

Ohio should sell beer at the games hands down thats extra money for the university and you wouldnt have to worry about students drinking and driving..They are going up the hill to court street and spending the money anyway..this will defiently keep many in the seats.

The problem is that you are interpreting these comments as "Oh my god! I have to have alcohol in my system or I'm going to have a nervous break down!" when in reality it is more like "I want to be where the fun is at! All of my friends are at the bars, I need to go too or I'll miss out on the fun."

It is less about the consumption of alcohol and more about the social scene that just happens to be centered around bars/alcohol. We have a culture of partying. By we, I don't mean just OU. I mean the majority of American universities.

The vast majority of OSU students don't go to most games. They go to the tailgates (i.e. where the party is at) and then go drink and watch the game in a bar. They do have a larger number of students going to games though, because it's the "cool" thing to do.

DelBobcat, I wish you were right, but some of the comments on this board over the last year or so would say otherwise.  Several have posted things like "I got drunk before the game.  After half time I left to go back to the bars because I was loosing my buzz."

Right or wrong, students are doing this.  If you want fans in the seats, sell alcohol.  If you want to solve the nationwide college binge drinking epidemic, you're going to need to start somewhere other than OU.

I can back this one up.  My sister goes to O$U and she says that she and all her friends rarely stay past halftime.  They just go to be there and then leave at halftime and go to the bars to drink and watch the game their.  So it's not just our school that has this, it's much of America.

I think that those people are engaging in a bit of hyperbole. It sounds worse than it is. I don't blame your for being concerned though.

While I feel that one and two are largely the same, and the bigger shame because we can't seem to put the "shame" of being a party school behind us by catering to the clientele by selling brews, I answered three because it is a shame that we haven't started to gain recognition from the students that this is a new tradition of winning (no offense to Grobe), and that there was no recognition that this was a competitive bout that went down to the wire.

The ledge of judgement is pretty compelling, but v seeing this finish in person, I don't think there is much of a comparison to the "hotties" in the CI. (the game obviously winning out)

And one more thought about student  AND other patron drinking before, during and after games:

If you know you can drink AT the game, would you not feel less compelled to drink more before the game if you knew you could buy a few beers during the game, and then potentially reduce the amount of alcohol post game, hence leading to more responsible consumption through the entire game attending experience?

I think so, just my humble opinion.

maybe we could go the AAA baseball route and turn the north endzone into a fan fun zone but taylored to the college student- build a dance floor with a live DJ, couple of hot tubs, some beer pong tables, couches with a wall of TVs, a bar, etc. We'll call it the Sin Den.
