What if?

The Old Persons side looked to be about 60% full on Wednesday. If we'd've been 8-0 entering Wednesday night, does everyone come in from all over the state? What's the crowd in that case?

I'm afraid that it might not be any better than what was in the stadium the other night.

I would have to say that it would have been probably about the same.

The reason why I loved going to OU is the same reason why it makes it a challenge getting back there as often as I would like to visit and attend as many sporting events as I would like.....Athens is not easily close to many areas where ticket holders and alumni are...ie C-bus, Dayton, etc....

And a weekday game is tough to do with a stricter schedule of when people may need to get home for work, bedtime with kids' school, etc...a game on a Saturday allows for flexibility of when people need to get home.

With the game being in the week and pretty late start at the 8pm slot, I dont think many people planned on going down, no matter what the teams record.

I went and loved it, but to do so I had to take a half day off work Wed. and pretty much the whole day off Thursday and stay overnight at the OU Inn.

I'd expect an undefeated record would have meant a few more fans, but only marginally so.

My wife and I made the 2 1/2 hour trip by leaving right after work, getting there 30 minutes before start time and then getting home at 3 a.m. I had to be in to work at 7. I'm still trying to catch up on sleep, but it was worth it.

Sadly, in my section, I'd say at least half of the people left before the game was over. Several left after Temple's last touchdown. That really doesn't make sense to me. Why watch all but the last 20 minutes of a great game?

I can say that no matter what the record was I could not have made it on a weeknight. However, if the game had been on a Saturday I would have considered making the seven hour drive and staying in Athens on Saturday night.

UpSan...I have to agree with you. although it is nice to be able to be flexible (as I am at my age) it is just really hard to get to Athens for an 8pm game that ends a mid night and then drive 3 hrs home to cincy. But, YES it was wotrth it. Great time! As I said before, I don't get the whole walk out and leave early thing either.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Even with this...I dont think the "old person's" side would have had much more people.....the only area I could see more people coming from would be C-bus, approx 1 hour from Athens, easier to get back same night.

The people from Dayton, Cincy and Cleveland (2 hours or more) were either coming to the game or not, no matter what the record or ranking.

Not sure where to post this, but while our crowd was not all that big, I was very glad to see the student section looking so good in the first half. They were rowdy, they made noise, and they made that side of the stands look nearly full. What's also nice, is that our fans are actual students. It's a college football game and--whodathunkit--our fans are college students! Sure the big boys look impressive with 80,000 to 100,000 sellouts, but often times close ups of those fans are people like me, middle aged and older.

I go to Neyland stadium once and a while, and the crowds are huge, but they are not dominated by students. It's a totally different atmosphere, and in some ways, I think Ohio should be proud of that.

I left northeast side of c'bus at 6:05 and after parking and walking in. They kicked off right as I got to my seat. And that is with some hard pushing of the posted speed limits on the way.

Interesting. I thought there'd be fairly strong support for a packed house since, as Optimist says, we'd be rated.

Even though we'd do better on a weekender, our apparent inability to fill says a lot about our relative attractiveness in the conference shufflling. I know we can attend pretty well at the Convo for hoops. But football is huge. Isn't football driving the re-shuffling?

There is the problem with this weekday game. The game could be for the division title, students will be gone and the Alumni will not be able to make it to the game. Some students will stay, but not the atmosphere you want for a championship-type game. Sadly, I think the Friday noon game would have been better.

I was an OU fan before I started posting on this board... Living in Cleveland, I can safely say I wouldn't have pushed my dad (MedinaCat) to come to this game if we were at OUr current record... If we were undefeated and ranked? I'm convincing my parents that this game is worth skipping school.

Being ranked is a big deal, we were getting votes before we lost to Rutgers... If we beat Rutgers, we're almost ranked... If we keep winning up to Temple, we're definitely ranked... That means fans in the stands.

I've seen crazier things happen.

So no one has any vaction time or pesonal day anymore? I took the day after off because i start work at 3:30am. So my question is if you want to be there why not take a day or two off. I look at the game dates and take days off as needed.

As said earlier by others...because of this I will not be able to attend the Miami game...I would love to but being in patient care..I can't do that to my work as well as with the holidays coming..can't drop that cash for another room.

When I looked at the games at the beginning of the season I had to choose between temple and FIAMI..and despite the rivalry...in my mind Temple game >FIAMI game.

I am in a similar situation as PTGrad, but I opted for the Fiami game, kinda banking on the OHIO win to make the Fiami game potential more meaningful. The midweek home games in the fall at times I can make them, and at times I just can't be there.

Optimist is right - largely because the Local Athens/OU Community/SE Ohio area fan base would have filled more seats if we were ranked!

Per travelers - the late start (therefore late end) made this impossible w/o taking at least a part day off work (or being useless w/no sleep) if travelling over hour and half. I decided not to go and make the long late night drive back because my 8th grade son could not have gone w/me since he had school in the morning. We go to all the games we can together, he would have been t'd off if I went without him - especially since we could watch it on TV in Columbus at home together (which we did of course and LOVED it). He says he's a future Bobcat (wanna keep it that way).

I don't think Ohio has quite enough tradition yet with the fans. Boise State and TCU had attendance at about our level for the first few years of top 25 success. It was only after 5 years of rankings did the fans and most importantly big donors start to materialize. The program has to win its annual BCS game and become a player on the National scene before fans will start to believe.

What about the other way? When..not if..there are too many students and, so, no seats available except for the Old Person section. Do the students get the seats not taken in the Old Person section? How do we know which ones those are? Or the overfill just runs to Victory Hill?

Since the students will not be at the miami game I am one of the old people(I think 57 qualifies as old these days) who will be moving to the other side of the field behind the ohio bench. Any other old timers up for it just like 2 years ago when Temple was here the day after Thanksgiving?
