Hello bobcat fans! I am a student at Ohio university, enrolled in a class about social media. For my research project I have chosen to study Bobcat Attack and It's role in Ohio football. So I wanted to ask you, the users, some questions about this site. Feel free to answer one of them, all of them, or any combination. Thank you, and GO BOBCATS!!!

1.  Describe the main benefits you get from bobcat attack. (Do you  like the bobcat news, the community, etc)

2. How do you relate to other members of bobcat attack?

3. How would you describe the "average" user of bobcat attack forums?

4. In what way does bobcat attack affect the way you view Ohio sports, and the University? Does it affect your actions toward Ohio sports (for example, are you more likely to come to a game, or donate because of something on bobcat attack)

Bobcat Attack provides TONS of useful information and sometimes insider info that otherwise most fans would not be privy to. But there is also a side of this board that reminds me of old men in a barber shop or at a little corner store gossiping. Overall its a great site and compared to other MAC schools is one if not the BEST site.

1.  Describe the main benefits you get from bobcat attack. (Do you  like the bobcat news, the community, etc)

* I think the main benefit I get is the information about the team and what's going on with the players and coaches.  It gives me a better understanding of what's happening on the field.

2. How do you relate to other members of bobcat attack?

* If by "relate to" you mean "get along with", I would say that OU alumni get along pretty well amongst themselves, but relationships with followers of other schools varies.

3. How would you describe the "average" user of bobcat attack forums?

* Someone who really cares about OU in general and Bobcat athletics in particular.

4. In what way does bobcat attack affect the way you view Ohio sports, and the University? Does it affect your actions toward Ohio sports (for example, are you more likely to come to a game, or donate because of something on bobcat attack)

* My attendance at games and donations to the school depend on time and money, both of which, unfortunately, have been in short supply lately.  Instead, it helps me have a better understanding of the struggles associated with a mid-major (i.e., non-automatic qualifier in football; non-"Big 6" conference in basketball) athletics program and the growing pains it goes through.

The benefits for me are most importantly to get the info I need for my Bobcat teams.  The b-ball and football coverage are the 2 that I crave.....but info about all Cat sports are appreciated.  I also am a recruiting junkie who enjoys Cat recruits.

2. How do you relate to other members of bobcat attack?

I've developed friendships over the past few years with some that will last until I leave the planet.....maybe beyond....haha.

3. How would you describe the "average" user of bobcat attack forums?

A Cat fan who enjoys info about Bobcat sports.

4. In what way does bobcat attack affect the way you view Ohio sports, and the University? Does it affect your actions toward Ohio sports (for example, are you more likely to come to a game, or donate because of something on bobcat attack)

Without this forum I would be casually involved with Ohio sports. With this forum it is my passion and the sports forum that I spend hours on daily

Two things come to mind:

Bobcatattack is the 2011 version of the corner bar.  It's where those who have an interest in/are associated with OU athletics hang out to discuss/argue sports.

Secondly, and this may cause some problems, it's where a bunch of wimps hide behind an alias and claim to be experts on all things sports related.  In number one above, you have to man up.  In the world of handles, you just have to type.

I certainly get a lot of "insider"/"closer to the pulse" info I can't get easily or timely elsewhere - especially since I live in Columbus. Those who post links/info etc. to game broadcasts are very helpful. Info on recruits is great.

I also like being able to get a feel of fan comraderie at any moment of the day that I want by just jumping on the site. It's a virtual Bobcat Fan family, we all love our team - and often we all bicker about things - from the potentially very important, to the most trivial and meaningless of topics. Reading posts, the banter, and interacting with all the "armchair coaches" is a fun pursuit (heck - even "armchair university presidents"). The site can get pretty "gossipy" - but great because we all want to know what the gossip is.

The site does not affect decision on whether I make the trip to a game - season tickets BBall so I do every one I can (almost all). As the FBall team has improved over the years - I make the trip for a game or 2 every year - but not due to influence from the site. I can't say it influences how much I contribute either.

1. Bobcat attack, and Ohio athletics in general, allow me to reconnect with my alma mater. Living across country I don't get to visit Athens often so forums like this one are a great way to stay connected with (mostly) like minded individuals.

2. I don't think I know anyone on here in the real world so I don't get too wrapped up in personalities and trends of certain commentors.

3. I think the average user varies from a die hard passionate fan to the more casual supporter, but the common thread that binds us is our love for Ohio University. Nobody roots for the Bobcats because they're jumping on a bandwagon or trying to fit in at the office, if you root for the green and white its because those colors mean something pesonal to you.

4. bobcat attack has helped me become a bigger supporter of athletics then when i was a student and has effected how I donate to the school positively.

You can use a handle and put your real name on the profile page......some of us do that.......never caused me any problems....but I never say (type) anything on here that I wouldn't say to anyone's face....including players.

1. The variety of news you can get from all Bobcats sports, the ability to vent on all things good and bad, and finding people with a similar love for OHIO athletics

2. We all are part of small group of fervent Bobcat fans

3. Former alum that visits the site for more in-depth news and conversation about Bobcat sports that they can't get from normal channels

4. I have donated to specific Bobcat fundraisers or bought apparel due to posts on this site.  The site also does a great job of keeping fans informed of all the possible media options for a game, which is great for out-of-staters and when you can't make a game yourself.  It is also great that opinions here have been known to cause action from university officials and the Athens bookstores.

1. There isn't a lot of news nationwide on the Bobcats, but you can find it all here.
2. I'm an outsider, since I didn't go to Ohio, but I have been welcomed in, and feel I have many friends here. If it weren't for the people here, I'd have stopped following Ohio football long ago.
3. There is no average, they are all above average. This is the only sports forum that I have ever read where grammar and spelling are expected to be perfect, and merely supporting the team is not enough.
4. This definitely makes me want to come to games, and without it, I wouldn't have that inclination.

1. We as Ohio fans are sort of devotees of an outlawed pirate radio station off the coast of Appalachia that can't be heard anywhere without secret decoder rings. (What a mixed metaphor! Yikes!)This is the place to plug in our secret decoder rings. Often I feel like I'm rooting for something alone. When you come here, you realize other people love the school and the athletic programs as much as you do. More than even going to Peden or the Convo and getting stuck by a 22 year old who will leave at halftime and smells like the bottom shelf had a shelf life and needed to be stored in their stomach.(Awful metaphor! Yikes!)

2. I've met a few. They had no idea who I was when I talked to them. The biggest problem with the whole decoder ring thing is: it makes you so nerdy you don't want to admit to it in real life. I don't really come here to interact with other Ohio fans. I just like knowing they're there. At a safe distance from me and those I love.

3. I think 90 percent of the users don't actually type anything down. They are the sane ones who lead productive lives. The rest of us are insane. Clinically insane people who argue over whether we should be known as OU or Ohio or  or The Artist Formerly Known as Ohio U. We all have grandiose and shockingly intricate ideas for how Ohio becomes a major collegiate power, how Peden will one day have a Jamba Juice in a newly-added solid gold upper deck built by virgins, and how pretzels are too or are not soft enough at concession stands. One person got kicked out of a basketball game. Another threatened to leave the stadium at halftime because we played Wofford. Other fanships don't think about these things. We...we are nerds. I say that in as loving way as I can.

4. The place gives you a sort of peer pressure to be more supportive.

Every year at MAC tourney time in basketball there is a thread that basically threatens the life of any board member  who isn't in Cleveland. We largely acquiesce.

1. Bobcat Attack (please, the capitalization!) benefits me by giving salve to my Bobcat jones and also by letting me in on inside information, personal recountings and post game venting across the board (so to speak).

 2. I relate to other members of BA as kindred spirits and members of an exclusive club that I want to a part of.   I count all of them among my close friends even though 99% have no idea who I am. (Sorry, Al).

 3. The average user of BA is obviously someone just like me.  Interested, occasionally interesting, possibly affected (in the SE Ohio slang kind of way) and clearly capable of using his / her time and energy for much more worthwhile things.

 4. This site has made me a better Bobcat.  I am a more intelligent consumer of sports because of it; I participate in the University community more because of it; I undoubtedly have contributed more money to athletics and the University because of it and I have clung to my disdain of M%$#^ for more years than is healthy because of it.

I'm deferring to Heisenberg on this one. I don't know how I would have responded to the questions, but in reading the posts here, I don't think I could have said it much better than Mr. Smith. Bravo, sir.

Well said Brian....just a few observations:

* Yes we are nerds......bleeding green nerds.

*   Global warming may produce the coast of Appalachia sooner than you think......owning land across the ocean from the underwater Parkersburg may be profitable.

*  I would volunteer to help the virgins.

This website is more reliable than the official website many times.  For example, this website and ESPN says the Temple game is on ESPN, while the official website says ESPN2.  If I tuned into ESPN2 as instructed by OhioBobcats.com I would find a real "Blackout"! http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-footbl/sched/ohio-m-footbl-sched.html

Your name looks familiar.  Do I know you?

bobcat11013 wrote:

1.  Describe the main benefits you get from bobcat attack. (Do you  like the bobcat news, the community, etc)
My main benefits are getting information on the Ohio football team, Ohio basketball team and the Marching Band.  It's not filtered information like Ohiobobcats.com.  It's more "inside" information and detailed than available from a newspaper.   Additionally, it's usually the most current information on sports teams I care about.  You have about 75-100 regular members who are fans, parents, OU employees and they are out there scanning the internet, reading news media, hearing things on campus, hearing it from administrators or their student-athlete sons and then sharing it for discussion here.

It's also that you can't find fans that share this passion for Ohio sports where many of us live now.  A large percentage of my neighbors couldn't pick Athens on a map, much less care about what's going on there.  So it's a bond for fans who can't do the Monday Morning Cooler Talk about OU with their coworkers or neighbors without getting that blank stare and a dumb comment like "OU...oh yeah...great party school."

I'll admit that I don't get to know details on the players like some, I couldn't name a single offensive or defensive lineman, but I know some of the key players.   I like finding out in the game threads where on the internet or TV I may be able to see the OU games, finding out someone here has an extra pair of tickets to the Rutgers game available in the OU section for free, or reading OU perspective on what scenarios must play out for OU Bowl games or MAC b-ball playoffs.  If I'm going to an away game, I can find out where other fans will be hanging for pre-game parties.  This was awesome site for information on pregame/postgame parties during the NCAA Tourney games in Providence.

It was also on bobcatattack that I first heard about the band's performance of Party Rock Anthem.  Someone posted it and I saw it here the Sunday morning after the game they performed it.  I first viewed the youtube video that now has 3.5 million hits when it only had 89 views and sharing it with my friends that same morning on FB.   I also saw someone post that the band will be at Pittsburgh Steelers game next weekend. I haven't seen any other information on that trip, not even on the Marching 110 Facebook page.

2. How do you relate to other members of bobcat attack?
It's a pretty easy community of members to get along with.  You kind of get familiar with the regulars.  Most share same passion.   You get to know who has pretty reputable information and who may post to be abrasive and get reactions.  About the only topic that gets heated here consists of Ohio Alums/Students who cheer for OSU.  For example: How can OU students wear OSU jerseys on campus and to Ohio football games?   How can some OU alums cheer for OSU over Ohio in sports?  Is it OK to cheer for both teams?  Why do some Ohio fans hate OSU when they play in different conferences?

Kind of like my brother-in-law who graduated from Ohio, but couldn't care less about OU sports and worships OSU to the point of depression when they lose.

3. How would you describe the "average" user of bobcat attack forums?
I think most are alumni.  There are a few students, but very few outsiders (non-OU affiliated). There might be a random Marshall, Miami or Temple fan who pops on to "trash" talk, but usually only when those teams face off.  Otherwise, most are just sharing their passion developed when they attended Ohio.  I think it's pretty rare for an bobcatattack member to not have attended or be currently attending OU.  It's not like OSU where they have self-declared "Die-hard life long fans" who have never seen the inside of a college classroom....In other words, the overall education level of the fans here is higher, creating much better conversation.

4. In what way does bobcat attack affect the way you view Ohio sports, and the University? Does it affect your actions toward Ohio sports (for example, are you more likely to come to a game, or donate because of something on bobcat attack)
It creates an extended connection to the campus.  You feel like even though you aren't there, you still are in tune with campus happenings.  It opens up the door to go to more games (home and away) when you know that when you get there, there's going to be a tailgate or pregame bash to meet some of the posters here. If you can't make the game, you can find out here if the game can be viewed anywhere.

1.  Describe the main benefits you get from bobcat attack. (Do you  like the bobcat news, the community, etc)

Biggest benefit by far is keeping in touch with bobcat news, before this website/message board it was nearly impossible to find ANY bobcat news and as an alum it has helped me re-connect with my alma mater.

2. How do you relate to other members of bobcat attack?

Kindered spirits. We love bobcat sports and while I was in school those were few and far between. I am sure the older alum had similar experiences. So this helps connect all the sport loving bobcat fans together.

3. How would you describe the "average" user of bobcat attack forums?

My guess the average user uses this forum as more of a 'keeping in touch' type mentality. While there are your core users that post all the time, I'd like to think alot of the 'users' just lurk on the forums to keep in touch.

4. In what way does bobcat attack affect the way you view Ohio sports, and the University? Does it affect your actions toward Ohio sports (for example, are you more likely to come to a game, or donate because of something on bobcat attack)

Bobcat Attack has really affected my view of Ohio sports. Before this site (and I have been here since the close to the beginning)  it was impossible to find info about Ohio sports. And I am an info nut, I just love reading it. So as a result it was hard to follow them. It was basically out of sight out of mind. Because of the information vacuum I reverted back to my childhood team (Ohio St). They had websites along with more media coverage. If I followed recruiting it was easier to follow a team like Ohio St versus Ohio. But this site changed that, I can follow what recruits have interest in Ohio, heck, even KNOWING the recruiting class was impossible before this website. Also, just knowing roster changes is a big deal. That didn't happen before this website, at least knowing the reasons and such.

As for effecting my actions toward Ohio sports, it has helped me donate more (from nothing to a little bit) and to buying more Ohio apparel. Coming to games is tough for me at this moment in my life, but I would hope in the future that will change.
