Wetzel says it's in the works:

The athletes want to get paid

and

will possibly boycott a bowl game to get it done.

I wouldn't book those Potato plans for Ohio / EMU quite yet.

So the boys from OU and North Texas State are supposed to give up a rare moment in the sun at their "minor" bowl game to benefit the BCS teams from whom a boycott  "is too much to ask"?

I would like to meet the man or woman who can sell that deal because they could obviously sell the proverbial ice to the proverbial Eskimos, too.

On a related note, today's Dispatch carries a story about the NCAA approving a $2,000 increase in the stipend paid to D1 athletes.  Of course, someone has to come up with the money.  To help make this point, this table showing spending per athlete, per FBS school as part of the article.   Very interesting stuff.  Ohio and the rest of the MAC can barely put up the ante currently.  Allowing the well padded programs to add a $2,000 kicker to their schollies will seal the deal for the BCS and conference consolidation.

By Jessica Wehrman THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

WASHINGTON — NCAA President Mark Emmert said yesterday that he supports a plan to increase scholarship grants to student-athletes by $2,000 in hopes of getting them closer to the full cost of attending college.

He told the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics yesterday that such a proposal would help student-athletes who can’t work outside the classroom because of their obligations on the playing fields. The $2,000 would be in addition to money they receive to cover tuition, fees, room and board.

Emmert said he expects all of the Bowl Championship Series
conferences to adopt it — at least those six that get automatic bids to BCS bowl games — because they have the revenue stream to afford it.

Agree no reason for us to do their dirty work - especially if the solution THEY want does not include us.  We'd be the laughing stock of the country.

Wow...that's the equivalent of telling Wall Street Protesters they should shutdown Hocking Valley Bank to stick it to Corporate America. That's one of those articles that you can't really think the writer believed, but was hoping would get web hits just because people want to read how stupid it was.

The athletes have to impact the fat cat wallets. When CBS or ESPN lose millions and NCAA loses millions, then the talk gets going.

Here's how I'd try it...I'd use Final Four because easier to get 26 guys to agree than 150+ football players. Players of both teams skip championship game and sign their own contract with sponsors and TV to do a separate championship game...then sell the book and movie rights. Each kid could walkout rich and make their
point.

Please, please don't take away my hopes for an EMU/Ohio U. bowl game. It will be the greatest collegiate provider of lulz ever.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure that Jessica Wehrman (reporter of the previously mentioned Dispatch article) is a former Bobcat and Post editor.

I don't endorse the furry lifestyle, but when the Bobkitten is involved things can change mighty quickly...
