I know I am late to the dance on this one but...............how does ESPN3 work?

Is it pay per item, monthly or annual?

I will be traveling back home Saturday around kick off and will be relying on 4G speeds to get me the game.

Any thoughts?

Diamond,

Pretty sure it all depends on your internet provider.  Go to espn3.com and it should come right out and tell you.

I have the watch espn3 app for IPHONE and can watch live games on that, even on 3G

Hope "Sweets" wasn't too grumpy you made her stay so late.

Good luck with it, Diamond.   I just figured it out this year and find it to be about the coolest thing ever.  In additon to Bobcat football, I plan to keep up with the Aussie Rules Grand Final matches.

That's right, kids, Auusie rules is back on ESPN.  It's 1983 all over again.

There is a way to cheat ESPN3, for anyone that does have access to the site through their ISP provider.  You can create a profile and in the account settings set it up so that you can access ESPN3 on any ISP as long as you sign in to it with your profile login.  There are directions online somewhere that explain this in more depth.  I've actually given my brother my log in information so that he has access to it.  But since this profile is also tied to my fantasy sports teams I don't give it out to anyone else.

I called ESPN Tech Support. Not good.

My issue is my broadband provider is local and they are not listed as an approved ESPN partner. Thus, I cannot authenticate my local provider to access ESPN3. According to the support rep, you cannot do this over a macro cellular network by itself. You have to authenticate the service via your broadband provider which sucks for me.

Well.....I have until Saturday to figure something out.

An interesting update...............

I downloaded the Watch ESPN app to my Android Device. I picked a provider from the approved list just to see what happened.

It appears I can watch (4) hours for free without completing the account set up! I guess I will not use that until Saturday and see what happens.

More to follow...........

I looked at the other thread, which lists webcasts. It looks like virtually all games will be on ESPN3. Apparently that is only accessible to people with Time Warner, which I don't have, so am I correct that there is no way for me to watch any games this year via the web?

ESPN3 is accessible to folks with a wide-variety of ISPs.  For instance, I can access it with my DSL service from Frontier.  It's also accessible to those who have DSL from Verizon.  The ISP has to pay ESPN for the service.  When I sign in from home to ESPN3 a little logo appears in the upper right corner that says:"Powered by Frontier."

I think that is the secret sauce, L.C. If you have one of the cable/broadband providers on the approved list, you are a lock for ESPN3. I do not.

ESPN3 is available through a pretty large number of ISPs -- who do you get your internet package from?

My internet is through Windstream. I see them on this list of supported ISPs. I guess there must be a way for me to see this. When I go to the ESPN3 site, I can't do anything, so i must have to go there some other way, such as through the windstream website.

Both the Windstream.net site and ESPN3's old site's affiliate list indicate that they subscribe to the service.  Have you tried to hit www.espn3.com or www.watchespn.com and launch a player for an event with ESPN3 next to it (try one of Saturday's football games under the replay tab, for example).  You may have to install the player software if it hasn't been used in the past.

According to the site, you are covered with WindStream:

You should see a large image at the top cycling between the Stanford/Arizona and OSU/Miami games with a play button overlayed onto it.  What does it do when you click on that?

Looking at the site it keeps referring to "TV provider" and or "Mobile provider". I have no "TV provider", and only basic mobile phone service. I'm hoping to watch from a desktop via ISP.

This is what I do to access it at home. I have Time Warner at school so ESPN3 works perfectly there. I made my account using Time Warner internet, but now when I go home I can still watch ESPN, even though my home internet provider doesn't support it. It still says "Powered by Time Warner" when I'm logged in from home.

My suggestion is to find someone whose ISP supports ESPN3, register an account at their house and you should be able to access it across all ISPs.

Do you see any logo where I have "Powered by Xfinity"?

Nothing happens at all. Also, no, there is nothing at all where yours says "powered by Infinity".

Might try disabling any popup blocker you might have -- the site does launch its video player in a popup window.  If it dims the screen and asks for an ISP, is Windstream in the list?

Sounds like the site may potentially not be recognizing your IP address correctly as having access.

I was really hoping the thumpin we put on Marshall might result in an "upgrade" to ESPN 2.  Too short a notice for something like that Alex?

Definitely.  While you do often see 6 and 12 day selections, those games in play are left "TBA."  Big East generally has fewer of those than other more big-time leagues like SEC and Big 10.

ESPN has a number of games each year stipulated in their contracts with conferences that have to appear on ESPN/2 and ESPNU, and the lower limits for the MAC are exceeded with games already selected.  However, there are a few selection dates for the MAC where a game will appear on both 2 and U in the same timeslot, and which game appears where can be decided later in the year base on performance.  For example, our game with BG is in the same slot as Miami @ Western Michigan.  One will appear on each network, so we can play our way up to a game on 2 there.  There are a couple other selection dates, one like that, and the ESPNU/3 split window the day after Thanksgiving we've played our way onto the U the last two years, but Ohio isn't in the mix for either of those, because our games are already confirmed to be on U and 2, respectively, those weeks.

Hope that makes some sense!  It's a somewhat complex system.

Aha, i have it. It wasn't a popup blocker, it was a script blocker, Noscript. Even when I told it to allow scripts globally (temporarily), it still prevented ESPN3 from running. Once I disabled it completely, I was OK.

Thanks for the help. Marshall game is running now...
