So if you were uptown in the mid to late afternoon yesterday, you probably saw a ton of female students wearing white and nametags. Women's Panhellenic Association, the governing body that oversees sororities at OU, had a recruitment function during the football game (I could be COMPLETELY off base with this, but seeing that WPA's twitter account updated at 10PM about Day 1 being complete, I'm going to assume).

Look, I was in a fraternity when I was a student. I realize that Freddy Fraternity and Susie Sorority would rather watch the Buckeyes at The Crystal than attend an Ohio game. To me, college football is one of the pillars of the overall college experience, especially at a university the size of Ohio. To schedule a somewhat mandatory function during an important (and what turned out to be a fun) game just shows that Greek Life isn't even trying to do its part to create a cohesive Ohio University experience. I distinctly remembering WPA scheduling the same function during the CMU game in 2008.

The athletics department shouldn't get off easy either. Not once did any of our ADs, coaches, or players show up to any of our chapter meetings when I was a student (but the guys selling Spring Break travel packages hit us hard). If there have been any marketing efforts to specifically target the Greek community, I'd like to hear about them.

It just irks me that there isn't a stronger relationship between ICA and Greek Life. During Homecoming week, there are all sorts of events where fraternities and sororities earn points for attendance and participation. Unless things were different in '09 and '10, when I wasn't around Athens, the football game, the climax of Homecoming week, is not one of these events.

Last year there was an attendance contest with IFC for basketball. It was for Miami, Akron and Kent I believe. Whichever chapter had the highest attendance at those 3 games was recognized and won some kind of prize. I dont know if they are doing this for football because I graduated. WPA and sororities always kind of do their own thing and I doubt it really made a huge difference in fan support for this game.

It's not about making a difference in attendance for yesterday's game. I agree that it wouldn't have. It's up to the girls to decide individually if they want to attend. What I wish to see is WPA scheduling around the football game to help create a culture. Look, many sorority girls were part of the popular crowd in high school, and in high school, the thing to do is go to football games on Friday night. It's where you go to be seen. At Ohio State, football games are the in-thing to do. Why can't it be the same at Ohio?

The problem with these "sign in and help your greek org" programs we've done for basketball games is that the people you attract don't give a damn about the game, stay just as long as they have to in order to get credit, and leave.  I distinctly remember a sorority girl wearing a Miami sweatshirt into the O Zone getting berated a couple years ago* and she clearly had no idea what she'd done wrong.  I think the people in these groups who are genuinely interested will make their way there, and the others don't really do us much good.  I agree scheduling around such things would be nice, but if enough overlap shows up as interest builds in the program, they'll probably figure it out on their own.

True, but it is an effort to reach out and promote Ohio Athletics. Honestly, the best way to reach out to anyone on campus is just WIN BABY!

At those functions, just make it so the Greeks have to stay until the end of the game. Problem solved. I mean, if any student goes to a home basketball game against Miami, Akron or Kent and honestly says they are not having fun, then there is nothing more we can do.

That girl in the Miami sweatshirt, did that happen to take place during a volleyball match?

I don't recall anymore, but I'm fairly certain you were present.  Agreed, though, and having them sign in on the way out may just be the way to go, but I suspect you'll see lots of folks trickling in during the 2nd half.

Give them wrist bands before kick/tipoff and only before. Then collect them only at the end of regulation.

I thought this was going to be an 80- year delayed complaint lodged against the FDR administration.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought of that before I opened the thread.

This was honestly how it was done. This is how it is done with other similar attendance based events during Greek Week (Airbands, Public Speakers etc.)

Anything that promotes athletics and could lead to new fans at little to no cost is a worthwhile thing. WPA recruiting is crazy and really involved. From my observations and experience, Football games are not the only part of the college experience WPA is missing during their rush period. You are basically with the girls in your house almost 24/7 outside of class. It seemed like a really odd setup when asking girls about the process, compared to my fraternities "rush" weekends consisting of hanging out at a cookout and watching football/parties at night.

Oh my gawd WPA's recruiting process is so dumb. If I had to watch nine different skits in a day and know that I would have to do the same every year, I would strongly reconsider joining.

I will say this, and I won't say it often:

Not everything on our campus has to revolve around an athletic event.

Our academic calendar only has so many weekends. We have to share them, and students have to make choices regarding what they feel they should spend their time doing.

Man am I glad I didn't post that or this thread would be as long as the one on the missing thread.

My only complaint about Saturday was that we didn't get to 50.

Thank you!.  With Ms. BCB yankin' on my arm, I held fast through our last possession hoping for the 50 to roll over on the scoreboard.  That would have officially made the evening a memory for all time.
