Yeah, I saw the yardage differential. But four turnovers and two offensive touchdowns against a 1AA squad? That's where the rubber meets the road, folks. Not yardage differential. That was very disheartening.

I agree.  I'm hoping the coaches kept it intentionally vanilla to avoid tipping off the Herd.  The no huddle looked very slow on all but the few plays led by Phil Bates.  And speaking of Bates, what is his role on this team?  Doesn't seem to have one at this point.

I love watching Ryan Boykin run.  Kid just punishes tacklers.

Have not been very impressed with Beau Blankenship thus far this year.

Maybe we've adopted a new "Slow Huddle" offense.

It is sad the thing that made us look the best last night was not our game but the nms game against minnesota. Who is #76? He was flagged 3 times for holding. Ouch.

+1.  I know the score was 30-3, but that was sloppy and hard to watch.  The 1st quarter was downright painful.  A bad combination of poor passes and dropped balls.  The defense looked good, but the offense was flat and out of sync.  That will get us blown out next week if the offense doesn't pick it up.

I was surprised how little Bates was involved in the offense. I think he only had 1 touch the whole game. Has me thinking we may have something special in the works for him next weekend.

Isn't this kinda like every yearly game we play against a D1-AA team? The enablers always will pipe up that we were keeping it "vanilla" as not to let Marshall get a peek at our gimmicky offense... I mean our innovative offensive schemes. I love when the enablers type that. I run around my apartment laughing hysterically like the audience used to on the Def Comedy Jam in the early 90s...

I will say a couple things that are somewhat promising about the direction of Ohio football:
  • At least scorewise we're winning big against the dregs. We used to be the dregs - and the only way to rise up is to pummel them. We can't afford to play to the level of our lower competition. We need to pummel the MAC too. Let's be the big turd in the toilet that won't go down for once...
  • I noticed on the ESPN box score that in the conversation area there is actually chatter from Bobcat fans. From what I remember is that there would never be any chatter. Maybe Bobcat fans are starting to come out of the woodwork a bit? That's promising.

This is my first look at the threads since the game ended 16 hours ago.  I'm kinda surprised to see so many in agreement (at least in this thread) that our offense looked flat--no crispness, that we don't play at a fast pace and that #20 needs more carries.  I agree with all of that.

Bates did play a lot more than one play--touches at qb and receiver.

Aside from the offense, one could argue that Carl Jones, Neal Huynh (our best player so far this year?), Noal Keller, Travis Carrie and Gerald Moore make us strong up the middle defensively.  That is not a bad place to start.

For offense, we need to establish the power run game and solid passing game in straight drop back passing.  Also, the power running game at the goal line.

Keep an eye on our takeaway/giveaway margin.

This. Southern Miss had 6 turnovers yesterday vs. Marshall's 2. If we take care of the ball, we win.

This team will NOT get blown out by anyone this year. Take a look at NMSU's starting tailback's stats so far this year...

2011 Game Log Rushing Receiving
DATE OPP RESULT   ATT YDS AVG LNG TD REC YDS AVG LNG TD
9/3 Ohio L 44-24 10 14 1.4 5 0 1 0 0.0 0 0
9/10 @Minnesota W 28-21 20 97 4.9 15 1 2 34 17.0 17 0

They ran the ball effectively last night against Minnesota! This defense is incredibly solid against the run and did pretty well last night even without Noah. Our front seven is faster than we've ever been and that seems to be really tough for our opponents to deal with.

That being said, it would have been nice to see the offense fire on all cylinders and get a 50-0 win. And if we just ran the ball down their throats, that's probably what would have happened even with the miscues.

Bottom line: We won 30-3 last night. The sky is not falling.

As Enabler-in-Chief let me say that I think Frank treated this game as a controlled scrimmage. To try to draw any conclusions from this game as to what to expect next week, I think, is not very wise.  I will agree with Monroe that I don't know why we don't have our QB line up under center for short yardage situations.  This question has been there for several years; it's not a new phenomenon.

Bates' plays that make the biggest differences for the offense are essentially gimmick and gadget plays. Why would they want to get those on tape for Marshall to scout? Everything else is just mid-line options or getting him to the edge... that he gets hit hard on. Why would you want to risk injury against Gardner-Webb?

G-W wasn't Wofford, a team that Clemson found out, you need to approach like a solid FBS squad.

This is one of those games you take the win and then burn the tape. If they had run flea flickers, a well-paced no-huddle offense and thrown the kitchen sink at G-W and had only won 30-3, that'd be worrisome.

Instead, this was exactly what you'd expect for a game that exists solely to boost the win total by one come bowl time.

I think there were a total of 11 plays run by the offense. Very little motion and shifting. That was as vanilla as it gets. Last night was a let's get a win, show as little as possible , stay healthy and go home. I thought the team was lethargic but all-in-all do you feel any different than after VMI or Cal-Poly?

Hyunh is quoted in the Post that they didn’t have much film on G-W so they didn’t know what to expect and practiced against everything.  That could explain the sloppy start -- G-W would've had plenty of film on the Cats, so they may have been better prepared.  The 2nd Q was the adjustment and the 2nd half was garbage time.  They should have plenty of film on the Terd this week, so practice should be more focused.

SBH is not impressed with Blankenship??? He sat out  last year because of his transfer from Iowa State. He has like a 5.5 per carry average so far in 2 games. He is probably our quickest back. What else is he supposed to be doing in order to impress you?

How many runs does he have for that average?  Separate the long gain against NMSU (I could have gained 20 on that play) and his yards per carry is, what, 2.8?  He is not effective up the middle and cannot break tackles, as can Ryan Blankenship.  Bad fumble at NMSU. Dropped swing pass Saturday.  I do like his speed, but I haven't seen much else thus far.  Maybe Frank is keeping it under wraps for Marshall.  Could be.

This is not a reasonable criticism. If you take away Boykin's longest run against NMSU (only 9 yards) then his average is 2.7. Not to mention that 2 of Blankenship's carries were at the goal line. The fumble wasn't great, but he also hasn't seen any action for a couple of years. He's probably a little rusty.

So far, I couldn't be happy with our stable of backs. And to think, we have Blankenship and Boykin for two more years after this one?! The program couldn't be in a better place.

Fumbles were the real issue. Without those, Ohio could have scored at least another two touchdowns, if not more, and the offense probably would have the ball enough to push the yardage up close to 500. And that even though the first string offense played less than three quarters.

Ohio's defense has been outstanding for all but one quarter so far in two games (and even without Keller for 1 1/2 games), but of course, Marshall will be a much tougher test.

SBH...I think you may have gotten hold of some bad enchiladas in NM...

Beau is going to be HUGE for this team this year and beyond.  He reminds me a lot of Jarvis (Kent State RB) in his prime or Jacquizz Rodgers only bigger and meaner.  He's got that bowling ball profile and he's not only quick but goes at it 110% on every play.  He and Boykin can lay some serious punishment on a would be tackler.

I for one LOVE our depth at RB...

Not as much as I love reading the detractors' commentary...

It's funny...It's kind of a mixture of being spoiled while at the same time not truly appreciating the depth of what's in motion at Ohio...

I know it's hard to grasp but OUr team finally actually IS at a point where playing a conservative game is an option for OUr Coaching Staff...

Last week it was "we will NEVER blow out an opening OOC game opponent".  Well, not only did we, but they went on to beat a Little 12 team that almost took down USC in the Coliseum.

Simple point is, we've made a lot of mistakes (typical early season type stuff), we haven't even scratched the surface of this team's potential and there haven't been 2 minutes between the first 2 games where the outcome has been in doubt.

This team is not only the deepest Ohio's seen in most of our lifetimes, but it's lead by a professional, dedicated  Coaching Staff that's committed to excellence.

Sit back and fling all the sarcasm you want...I'll just enjoy watching it taper off as the wins pile up...
