This is not easy for me to write.  As most regulars on this board know I have a strong commitment to Marshall based on the fact that I was the co-adviser of The Parthenon in 1970.  We lost our sports editor, Jeff Nathan, in the crash.  Jeff had become more than just another student to me; in the short time I knew him we became close friends.  At that time I was not that much older than the students I was teaching.  Jeff was from Parkersburg, where his earthly remains are now buried.  Jeff was extremely proud of Marshall.  In his columns he predicted a Thundering Herd win almost every week.  In those days that was a great leap of faith, but he saw great promise in the 1970 team.  All of his columns were well written and researched.  He was an eternal optimist, but he was never boastful.  He didn't talk smack.  He would be appalled at the Marshall fans of today who act like the obnoxious fans of Ohio A&M (aka O$U).  As Monroe pointed out this is still a small minority of Marshall fans, but it is a noisy, loud and boisterous bunch.  They embarrass me.  In the name of all that's precious to the memory of Jeff Nathan, Ted Shoebridge, and Nate Ruffin, please think before you type your next post.   Let's have respectful discussions of the strengths and weaknesses of Ohio and Marshall football.  Let's have friendly disagreements.  Let's not act like enemies who are ready to slug it out in the back alley.  The level of discourse on this board this week has sunk to almost an all-time low.  This pains me very much.  Marshall smack-talkers please clean up your acts!

Go Ohio!
Go Marshall (except this week)!

Sorry to hear about that loss... kind you shared that with us.

As for smack talking, it's just banter... I don't hate anyone and I am actually maybe one of the nicest people you could meet.

I don't get to talk smack with any fans since CUSA, since everyone is so far away... so it's always good to have Ohio here to mess with.

Don't take any of it personally, I'm super excited to see Athens Saturday and see what OU is all about.

We are... Marshall!

OCF,
Thanks for the effort but there's your answer.  The "nicest guy" among Herd fans blows you off, albeit politely, and the next belittles your efforts.  I can't wait to see what is next.

Apparently, civil discourse is a foreign concept to them, similar to integrity and respect and others that I am too kind to mention.

Personally, I long for the end of the game on Saturday so I can resume my usual and blissful lack of awareness that Marshall University even exists.

First time posting on this site...I am from Columbus Ohio and have been a die hard Marshall fan my whole life...I go to school at Marshall after visiting numerous universities in the great state of Ohio..I have a couple of friends that go to ou and look forward to seeing them this weekend..I will root for Ohio when they are not playing Marshall and I love this rivalry.

The first Marshall game I went to was in Athens and I had a blast..I hate Ohio state with a Passion and find it offensive to be lumped with their fans.. we aren't even close..

All I'm asking is to not lump us all together and a little banter never killed anyone..hope for a great game and a Cato shuffle to end the game (Marshall victory)

Tell that to Tupac...assuming he's not actually in hiding in Jamaica...

Edited to add: I apologize. That was a lame attempt at a joke that was a lot funnier in my head than it was when I read it. Feel free to rip me for it.

What is wrong with being lumped in with a few people, such as myself, who came over here to talk a little smack.  No one has cussed, used overly derogatory words, etc.

Crazy.

Its not church, its football, a game.  I love how people like me and Fedale and haveyouherd get lumped in to being crazy, and too much into it, when we dont even let stuff bother us.

Funny stuff.

Hint to stupd cow idiot-style fans; You protest here that you are benign and mean no harm and can't understand why mainstays here are angry at the nature of your posts (boastful/rude/arrogant).  If you're consistently getting this response here it could be an indication that you don't meet this board's standards.

But since you have not your master of the obvious, you miss this obvious message.

I finally decided to come and check out these boards.

What I find interesting is that OU fans seem to have this dislike of MU fans and claim they are bad fans when MU is known for having some of the best and most hospitable fans in the nation.

MU prides itself in a nice respectful gameday atmosphere

For you all to claim the opposite is very strange to me. I go out of my way every home game to welcome visiting fans to our town and try to treat them well while they are in.

Nothing wrong with being lumped with you guys..I just don't want to be lumped with Ohio state fans as a dislike for them has consumed me since high school..I love herd fans and know many that mean no harm just something to have fun with..please bobkitty fans do not take offense to anything said its just game week banter.. most of you I'm assuming are from Ohio so you can believe that I heard worse banter for a high school rivalry game..

You all acted like you had this pristine gated community with no imperfections, and then out of nowhere, a bunch of hooligans came in, started graffiting your walls, breaking windows, and setting buildings on fire.

I know you all don't get any opposing fans over here talking smack(because the teams you all play don't have fans) but are you all seriously THAT mad?

Can you not just accept it was smack talk?

I feel like you all are the whiny kids who never want to play tackle football and always insist on playing two hand touch because you don't wanna get hurt or your clothes dirty.

Get over it guys... I certainly am.

When/if you all do, I'd love to have civilized conversation.

I know a lot of Marshall fans who take the same attitude towards WVU fans (although the fires can be more than metaphors). Like when Marshall fans get upset when a store sells WVU merchandise but not Marshall. BOYCOTT!!!! RABBLE!!!!

But hey, that's WVU. Completely different situation, right?

Even with schools like Marshall, which have more hospitable fans, there are some bad apples.  That is particularly true of the under 30 "kids."  I, for one, will stay above that.

They are talking about resident Temple troll MH55. While I find you Herd fans annoying, Im not deeply offended by a little smack talk.
MU Fan: OHIO HASNT EVER BEEN GOOD! OU FAN: YOUR TEAM IS A BUNCH OF UNEDUCATED CRIMINALS etc.

It is a rivalry game, I find more trolling of a much more obnoxious manner from opposing teams of the Columbus Crew (toronto fc and Temple have similar fanbase mentalities). Bottom line, it makes it even sweeter for Ohio to win when you know the opponent you just beat has been running their mouth all week and really care about the game. 3 days until another win in a possibly historic Ohio season!

Don't you expect smack talk from many opponents fans when they invade the rival's message board? Why else would they want to interject into our threads? I think the best way to deal with it is to ignore any inflammatory posts rather than reinforce their bad behavior. While often tough to ignore, responding merely fuels those with severe personality disorders(MH55).

I'm sure you and many do go out of their way...This region of the country is well known for it's hospitality.  The problem is you can't speak for everyone and you can't use the word "claim" to describe firsthand accounts.  I have personally experienced at least one encounter like many have described in various threads, each and every time Marshall has visited Peden.  It is for that reason that I've never been to Huntington other than to drive through.

The things I've heard said and / or directed at me (while my children are by my side no less) are not things that encourage a trip to Marshall to experience on a grander scale.  The day Marshall Cheerleaders and your Mascot chose to leave the field and ring the victory bell in Athens (until an Officer escorted them away) was the day I wrote off any shred of respect I had for your program.  There are lines that should never be crossed in another teams stadium.  When Rufus went crazy at Ohio State, he was immediately removed and the whole structure of the program was changed.

On a related note, I understand the issues generated by sidewalk Alumni but that's something the program needs to be held accountable for.  You have to rein in these people with marketing efforts, security and one on one confrontations by invested fans when that behavior is witnessed.  If the program wants to continue to enjoy the revenue generated by these folks, they need to do things like ramp up tailgating security and post a hotline phone number in every section so that people can report aggressive behavior and those folks can be removed.

If you truly believe these things don't go on, I suggest wearing an opposing team's colors for the next big game in Huntington and walk around...

These kinds of things can be changed...I honestly hope they are...Judging by all the accounts of rational Marshall fans, the gameday experience in Huntington is somethiing I'd like to see eventually...

I am 24 years old, but I enjoy trying to be hospitable to opposing fans.

There is no reason to do anything outside of some fun trash talk because nobody can help what team they support. Marshall is the only athletic team that I actually feel nervous for watching them play. I am always on the edge of my seat and I can't help it. It is engrained in me and I am sure Ohio fans feel the same way about their team. Respect and understand that people like their sports team for various reasons beyond your knowledge and have fun supporting your respective programs. Light hearted banter back and forth is fun for all, but don't ever take it to a personal level as that ruins what it is all about.

I want Marshall to be known as a nice place to come for a game and a great set of fans to have in your town.

You can become "known" for lots of different things, but I would prefer for those things to be good

It's game week, and I'm fired up as a fan.   If my fairly innocent banter has bothered any of you I apologize.  I will not apologize however for the beating that your team is going to take on Saturday......
