Is Gardner Webb regarded as a good program in 1-AA? I feel like games like this add very little to our program and I hope we win by 3+ Touchdowns to justify playing this game

They are a member of the Big South.  Sagarin gives them a rating of #212, which is lower than any team in the MAC.  GW had a losing record last season.

But, last year, they did beat Akron at Akron.

They have a new coach this year in Ron Dickerson Jr.

They drew over 5,000 in attendance for their home opener last Saturday, which is not bad for I-AA in the Big South.  Their stadium seats over 8,000.

Most all FBS teams play FCS schools of this nature.  You just prepare for the game, respect your opponent, take care of business, and unlike Akron last year, move on with a win.

Just as Ohio plays at places like Penn State for the money, GW comes to Ohio for a payday, albeit much smaller. This kind of game does a few things for the program. It adds an extra home game in exchange for a small financial loss. That gives fans another game to go to, means less travel for the team, and usually adds a W to the record. It also gives the team the opportunity to work bugs out of the new offense before the MAC schedule. Some fans like these games, and enjoy the extra home date on the schedule. Others disagree, and would rather see Ohio taking on bigger names on the road instead, even if it means a loss.Still others prefer to disregard financial considerations, and think, wouldn't it be nice if Ohio could just afford to go toe-to-toe with football powers and get all 1-1 games. In the end, though budgetary considerations mean that if you want to have 6 home games a year, you're going to have to have some FCS games on the schedule.

I think Ohio has a good shot at winning this game by a wide margin, and I hope it also turns out to be a good opportunity to play the 2d and third strings a fair amount. Getting them some reps in a real game will only do good things for the program going forward. Based on past games, though, I expect GW to play hard, and have some good players, so they may have something to say about that, but I don't expect them to have the depth that Ohio has.

I have no problem with a game against G-W or any other FBS opponent. I don't look at this as a "tune-up" or any of those other terms that fans occasionally spit through their teeth. They come to play.

As good as we may yet become, OU and lots of other teams are capable of losing a game like this.

Each year some 80-85 of the 1-A programs schedule a game - or two - against 1-AA programs.  In recent years, programs such as Arizona, NC State and Duke have failed to become bowl eligible because two of their wins have come against 1-AA teams.  Texas Tech and Kansas State are other programs that come to mind that have scheduled two games in a season against 1-AA foes.  Eastern Michigan has done so for this season - Howard and Alabama State.  For EMU doing so makes strong sense.

This past weekend saw 7 FBS-FCS games in which the FCS team either won, lost by 3 or fewer or lost in OT.   Last season saw one Saturday when 4 FCS teams knocked off FBS teams.

+1...

While my Family and I will love every minute of this game (as with all games), I'll be most interested in watching whether or not our staff actually tethers Noah to the bench.  There's absolutely no need for him to see the field this weekend.  I'm thinking we may need to employ the irrigation specialist of BW3's commercial fame to assist in this effort...

Edit...

Arkley reports both Noah and Jones (no serious shoulder damage) listed as questionable for GW...

I know nothing about Brevard, but the Bulldogs spanked them in impressive fashion with two backs rushing for over 100 yards.
Although a tuneup type game, I see GW bringing their A game. Still Ohio should roll them.

Their real money game will be next week @ Wake -- Jim Grobe past and Jim Grobe present back-to-back.

They were mostly a running team (48 rushes; 26 passes) but the yardage was even (220-217).  Shut down the run and the passing game is only so-so; 14 of 26 last week against a D2 school.  As good as our running D was last week, shutting down the run shouldn't be a problem.  Just have to look out for the big pass play.

I'm not too concerned about our offense this week. G-W gave up 245 yds rushing against a D2 team; Donte and Company should have a banner night.  The passing game should be a whole lot more effective than Brevard's (2-6).  If they run the no-huddle as efficiently as they did against NMSU, G-W should find that OU is not Akron.

I think Brevard runs the Wishbone so GW giving up 245 yards on the ground may not mean they can't stop the run.   Brevard was like 2 of 6 passing.

GW will be OK but not as good as Wofford.

Here is some things about GWU: yes we did give up lots of rushing yards but Brevard is a triple option team so the stats are a little skewed.  With the new coach comes a new pro style attack as opposed to the spread which was run for the past 15 years.  Saturday was the first time since 02 that we had two backs over 100 yrds in the same game.  WR James Perry III is a legit pro prospect and the number 1 option in the passing game.

Fun fact: GWU head men's basketball coach Chris Holtmann is a former OU assistant

After much debate, the advantage of scheduling FCS schools at home for easy wins out weighs the negative impact on the schedule. OHIO is playing for bowl games and needs win 8 or 9 games to be a lock out of the MAC. Its a lot better to go 8-4 or 9-3 than 7-5. The only place where I see an easy schedule hurting if the program is contending for a BCS bowl but the entire MAC would be rated a lot higher if that was the case if we had a top 10 team. The only difference in strength between the MWC and conference like CUSA and the MAC is that Boise State and TCU are in the conference. TCU is leaving. The MAC builds a Boise State level program in both division and we are good.

I think these games and teams like NMSU are perfect for Ohio.  Marshall also a perfect matchup along with Rutgers. This is a fair schedule for a program like Ohio.  We are not a BCS caliber team going for a national title. What we can do is have a 9 or 10 win season and perhaps earn another bowl trip and build on the foundation that Solich has built. Being a regular bowl participant puts Ohio in the hunt for better players.  Eventually we win a MAC title and perhaps finish ranked and create some national respect.  Lets win the MAC East, the MAC title game and bowl game before we pump up the schedule.  Getting spanked by Alabama doesn't do much except cash a big check for the MAC.

Totally agree with our scheduling.

I would love to see us play an Alabama and win every other season.
I would love to see Ohio considered as academically regarded as Harvard.
I would love to see the Happy Fairy come to my house and give me money and ice cream.

The point is that we are probably going to get destroyed by a lot of top notch programs if we schedule these opponents.
It makes a lot of sense to have a schedule where we should be able to go 3-1 or 4-0 before MAC play.

OUR MAIN GOAL IS TO WIN THE MAC and this approach seem to be the most logical path.

I'd say by the week 2 point spread we have a fairly good chance of starting 2-0.

What I'd like to see at this game:

(1)  No injuries.

(2)  Bates showing his magic at QB or WR or wherever.

(3)  Nic Barber proving that the NMSU  sackes were no fluke.

(4)  Safeties like Moore and Carpenter and Hughes proving that they can be consistent.

(5)  Snyder getting a chance to be the #2 QB.

Those are all good.....I had a few more but they were stuff like G-mans Cowboy Beans not causing too many methane emissions......the Pub having LaBatts again for their Aquariums.....meeting some cool people like I did at the Wofford game last year......etc. etc.

Try to eliminate turnovers and reduce penalties.

Totally off topic and nothing to do with your point BUT I just have to share that I have spent time around quite a few people who are students/alumni at Ivy League institutions and they don't have half the critical thinking ability as my classmates at OU had.

I'll take my OHIO degrees over any other degrees in the country.

Columbus Cat:

Uhhh...well, first, GW is not Division II...they are Division I FCS, formerly known as I-AA.

Dayton is in a specialized class called Div. I non-scholarship.  Those teams never play Div. I scholarship teams.

I look for bobcat love's response to teams in MAC playing Alabama State, Stony Brook, Morgan State, Nicholls State.

I know that we have greater aspirations.  But some realism in outlook is required.

Ohio has Penn State on the schedule next year. That shows some aspiration. Rutgers, Kentucky, Minnesota, Louisville are not in that tier. I would like to see more of Penn State, Iowa, Nebraska, Purdue on the schedule with some bigs in the south like Tennessee, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Georgia. Someplace the school can still bus the bobcat entourage to. One a year is fine. It works for Boise State (Oregon, VT, Georgia). The goal should be a regular top 10 program winning 12 games a year.

I understand that the big money game is important to the department and all, and while it may be nice to occasionally get a shot at a big boy, I don't think it should be done annually.

Once we get to the point where we can handle (I mean beat regularly) Marshall, Rutgers and other lower tier teams from more prestigious conferences...THEN we should think about taking on a Goliath every year. Until then, I'm quite happy having a schedule where we have a real shot at winning every Saturday (or Tuesday or Thursday or Friday )
