A good broadcast

I've e-mailed Joe Brackman, the GM at Aggie Vision, to let him know how enjoyable last night's broadcast was, not just from the result but also from a professional standpoint. All in all, the announcers were very objective, i.e., not pulling too much for the Aggies, and very knowledgeable about OU. I realize that it's because of the OU and Ohio connections on the broadcast team, but they're a breath of fresh air compared to some of the ESPN crews that basically show up on game day and even Michael Reghi, who goofs up waaaaay too much for a local guy (he referred to Boo Jackson as "Keith" on the MAC preview show, then corrected himself -- maybe at the prompting of his producer -- later). I thought the NMSU crew kept in mind that they were on GamePlan and that probably as many OU fans as Aggie fans would be watching. It was just pleasurable to watch.

I watched on ESPN3. I thought the Aggie Vision feed was very good. But, I listened to Russ and Rob. Only three or four seconds difference.

that's mighty generous of you. Personally, I thought they were horrawful. From the buthcering of names-Phill Bateman, Tyler Tettleman, etc. to Levon getting credit for every kick return regardless if the jersey number was 7, 8, 11, or 18.

And I disagree about their objectivity, they were rooting for us the way the ESPN hacks root for BCS schools. There are certainly some Aggie (or is it Eggie) fans that would agree-

next to Chris Spielman and his onslaught of arrogant stupidity these guys were an improvement, but they were still really really really bad.

Not very impressed here either. Was annoyed by the pronunciation of Aggies as "Yeahgies". Also, they thought every Ohio player was named LaVon Brazil. Even on defense sometimes. Is it really that hard?

The play-by-play announcer on Aggie Vision, Glen Cerny, is my brother-in-law's father. It was the first time that I have heard him do play-by-play. It definitely wasn't the best announcing job that I've heard, but it was kind of what I expected. The pairing of him and Danny Knee was not the best. Plus I feel like the quality of the audio feed made it sound even worse. Part of the problem is that Glen is not really a football announcer. Baseball is his sport (he knows way too much about baseball), and from what I have been told he does a pretty decent job with baseball games. He did the play-by-play for the Toledo Mud Hens on their television broadcasts from 1985-1999. I know that he was hired as broadcast director for NMSU, and not necessarily hired as a play-by-play guy.

As far as the issues with getting the names correct...part of the time I was listening to the Bobcats Radio Broadcast, and I heard Russ mentioned that they were also having some difficulties because Ohio changed some of the numbers prior to the game and they did not get all of the changes on the roster that was given to them.

I will say that after listening to the broadcasts of college games from other schools I realize how lucky we are to have Russ and Rob calling our games.

I watched the game via the TV feed on The Sports Pack from DirecTV. I thought these guys were average at best. Not calling the players by their correct name is inexcusable for a broadcaster, isn't that broadcasting 101? Sure they did mention Athens and some semi interesting stuff but that was all prepared ahead of time.
When they mentioned that Danny Knee was broadcasting my ears perked up. Then when I saw him it was obviously not the Danny Nee I knew. Should they have known that a Danny Nee coached our BB team?
In the end I tend to to expect that these broadcasters, on these regional stations, not to be as good as those on major networks, or even our group at Ohio.

There was some good and bad. It was apparent they did work ahead and actually knew some about Ohio, which was nice. A lot of national broadcasters don't seem to take the time to do that. They did get names of players wrong a lot, but it can be hard to see numbers at times. A few times I wished they would zoom in on the action more, but other than that, I think the video was good. I would say it was better than the average broadcast compared to other broadcats I've heard of Ohio games by the opponent's broadcasters.

Having done play-by-play (albeit for high school) I know how difficult it is to catch the numbers of football players during a play: you're at a distance, too many numbers look alike, a lot of bodies getting in the way and you can't always catch all the substitutions because of all the other things going on in the booth at the time -- that's what spotters are for on TV broadcasts. If you're not familiar with a team, it's often difficult to know instantly who's made the play. I tend to give announcers more of a break on that kind of stuff. I usually look for knowledge about the opponent -- for someone who had never seen the OU team, I thought their play-by-play guy did some homework (he seemed familiar with shift to the no-huddle and knew a bit about the history of the team and even mentioned that the game was on at the Cats Eye) -- and the amount of cheering for the home team -- there wasn't a lot "we" or "thata boy" type of stuff; take a look at the Big Tedozen Network broadcasts of nonconference games -- they're really big-time homies for the Big Tedozen team -- and NBC's announcers do a colonoscopy of Notre Dame. I thought the NMSU announcers well represented a national broadcast that would be watched pretty equally by fans of both sides.

You have got to be kidding me.

Most local broadcasters are fortunate to know the name of the opposing coach standing before them on the sidelines. These guys did a better job than anyone I've listened to call a game against us. We're just spoiled by years of being one of the best broadcasting and journalism schools in the country and turning out alumni and student workers who excel far beyond mediocrity.

Agree, if they didn't know about our Danny Nee - that is a us problem. Someone in our administration (SID) would/should have said to them, "hey, that's neat, our BB coach used to be..." It is not up to them to go through the BB media guide. That said, if the guy did Mud Hen games in the 80's you would hope he'd remember. But in the end, it is on the SID.

Met with Glenn Cerny the night before the game and traded a ton of notes info. Was interested in our game, but we all spent a bunch of time talking BG hockey and Dan Simrell's time at UT. And we actually spent a bunch of time comparing/contrasting our Nee and Fran Fraschilla as coaches. Pretty sure Glenn had been around MAC for so long that Danny Nee vs Danny Knee ceased to be funny to him a while ago. Likable guy who also runs the public broadcasting operation..........a lot like our own Tom Hodson in that he has a 'real' day job in addition to showing up occasionally on air.

Haven't gotten to see the game yet in the Tivo, but I look forward to seeing any promotion of the Cat's Eye on TV.

The broadcast was very bad. There were several wince-inducing moments of awkwardness between our two heroes in the booth. It was sort of reminiscent of Fred Willard's performance in Best in Show...

Joe Brackman is a former Ohio staffer. He did a good job for us, so it doesn't surprise me there were some good things happening there.

I agree. Thought they dida fine job. Appreciated them. No arrogance or put downs for us - the opponents. They had done their homework. As good of a job as many announcers on ESPN.

I agree. Thought they did a fine job. Appreciated them. They were more complimentary than many announcers and did not have any puts downs for our players. They had done their homework although they did make some mistakes. As good of a job as many of the announcers on other ESPN broadcasts.

Not pro-Aggie enough. Talks funny with an Ohio accent. Not a play-by-play guy. Should be a game show host instead of working this sportscasting gig. Interesting comments and some we've heard in the past on this board when discussing former Ohio announcers.

That's funny. I've spent a lot of time in NM (Albuquerque) and despite my SE Ohio drawl coming out occasionally, almost everyone I meet there sounds exactly like me. Of course, most of them aren't from NM either. I suppose Las Cruces has a higher percentage of natives.

Accents are interesting. One of my sisters is a linguist and she makes a big point that everyone has an accent. Her ear is so good that she can tell the differences between a multitude of different Ohio regional accents. She says that the only place in Ohio where people don't routinely slur their speech to one degree or another is in extreme northwest Ohio -- that is, To-LED-O, O-HI-O! My wife also is in the lingustics field, although she deals with applied linguistics and actually doesn't catch accents very well at all. Although I spent my whole life growing up in Toledo, where my mom and her family spent their whole lives, my dad grew up in southwestern Kentucky.
