Saturday morning's inter squad scrimmage showed great potential for this 2011 team to be very exciting.  ONE THING FOR SURE - THE BOBCAT'S KICKING GAME IS EXCELLENT - SECOND TO NONE and that includes the team in Columbus.  41 - Paul Hershey kicks em' high and long with great hang time - excellent leg - couldn't ask for a better punter.
49 - Mat Weller looks great - 57 yard FG with room to spare.  Had other long kicks that had room to spare.  He and frosh Yazdani  had solid powerful kicks. Couyldn't ask for better kickers.  Great job CATS - keep it up!  GO BOBCATS!!!!!!!

After the 2009 Buffalo game in Buffalo, several of us Bobcats went out after the squeaker victory for some late night adult beverages.  In the watering hole north of campus we ran into a very nice assistant Bulls coach  who came over to us for a long chat.

The subject of our place kicker came up and I asked if he thought Weller was the cream of the MAC and he said that the Bulls Special Team coach made the comment that, "Not only is the Ohio kicker the best in the MAC, it's highly likely that he is the best kicker in college football east of the Mississippi."  Then we bought him a round for the nice complement.

btw this assistant coach stated that they hoped we ripped Temples a new one later that year, WHICH OHIO DID, as they cannot stand the Owls--bad blood I guess from longer than MAC experience.

Also, in another thread it states that Ohio has not had a super star player to get public attention.  Matt Weller could be that guy.  What is the PR department doing to promote him to be an All-American.  A high school classmate of mine was an All-American OL his junior year on a program that didn't merit national attention but is in a big conference. After the team was announced I was excited to talk to my friend and when asked how that came about he thought it was because the university bank rolled a PR campaign that put his name everywhere. If that's true,  what is Ohio Athletics and the University doing to let every sports writer know that the best kicker in Ohio isn't in Columbus?

It's tough to build a program or take it to the next level when your marquee player is a kicker.  They're just not in the game that much and it's not a "sexy" position.  The cruel fact is, place kickers' magic moment usually comes as either icing on a TD cake or when the offense has failed; FGs are usually consolation prizes (unless they're game winners).  You've got to have a "skill" position player (QB, RB, receiver) on offense or a spectacular defensive player (Dion Byrum put on a great show against Pitt and that helped raise OU's image).  Matt is great and should be pushed for all kinds of honors.  But in the other thread they were discussing getting national attention and I don't see him being the one that puts the Cats on the map.  You need someone who's out there for nearly every offensive or defensive play and who's able to make a game-changing play at any time.  That's what gets fans' and recruits' attention.  T-Mac and Boo were that kind of player last year.  Brazill, Dunlop, Keller, Moore, Carrie and (from what I saw at times last year) Bates could be that kind of player this year.

We just cannot have any FG attempts blocked this year.  I believe that last year Weller was 11-14 with the three misses all having been blocked.  Not acceptable.

I think he had as many (if not more) blocked extra points than field goals.

Rooting for Akron is like cheering on the Taliban.
