I know this has been thrown around in other threads, but I thought it deserved its own spot.

Here are the tweets from Arkley:

FB Media Day is done. Solich makes it official; T. Tettleton is the 2011 Ohio starting quarterback

P. Bates, who was absent the last two days, was a participant in this morning's practice. He'll be a Wildcat QB/WR

In case you're wondering, yes, it is the earliest in a season that Solich has declared a starter at QB -- at Ohio.

I find the "earlyness" of this decision very surprising.  I thought Frank would wait until the last minute, as he has in the past, to make a decision.  Tettleton must be doing a very impressive job.  I wonder if Vick will be redshirted.  How much playing time do you think Snyder is going to get?

It was kind of odd how Frank brought it up in the press conference today. He made general comments for about 15 minutes and went through by position talking about experience or expectations there, simply nothing that QB was the one offensive position with little experience. Then the first question was on the running backs. He answered that and by the time he was done, he interjected that he probably should mention the QB situation and that Tettleton was named the starter. It was noted that it's the first time a QB situation has been settled before the season in a long time, and Solich said that he hopes that means something positive. He also went on to say that he wants to maintain an established starter. He said Tettleton really earned the starting job out of spring camp but he wanted to give it one week in the summer, and he said nothing at all happened to change his mind.

Good call, Frank.  This is the best of all possible outcomes.  The starter gets the reps he needs and the offense keeps the element of surprise, meaning opponents can never be sure.  We have a relief QB who is going to play and no one knows if it's for a play, a series or a game.  PROVIDED, Tettleton does his part and secures the job with his play on the field.

I watched practice yesterday and my chief concern about Tettleton remains - he's shorter than his lineman.  Had a number of balls batted down in drills.  But having watched Snyder, I understand the decision.  Snyder seemed pretty tentative.  Looks like Vick will be a player. I am guessing he will not be redshirted this year.

There are several positives in this announcement. Tyler is a team player and very popular with his teammates. This is his 3rd year in our system. We have our best OL in years so he has pass protection and a running game that will be tough to defend. He has extraordinary receivers at every receiver position, TE,WR, and RB.
Best scenario is that there are opportunities to get Snyder some playing time in the preconference schedule

Thanks for the practice details. Choosing Tettleton allows the Cats to go into their first game against New Mexico State prepared and hopefully gain some confidence. Tettleton struggles in the Marshall and Rutgers games then its an issue. Vick with another month of the play book under his wings then could have his chance to show what he is capable of.

I expect to see Snyder for a series or two in each of the early games, in the second quarter.

Generally in college ball over the last 20 years and for us over Solich's term, what % of the time have teams been forced to go to their back up qb?  Forced--not by choice.  I'm sure the % is very high. I'll bet that  teams are forced to go to a 3rd qb somewhat often, too.  Ya gotta have a number of guys ready.

Yeah, but when those defensive linement are laying on their backs, they'll be easy to see over.

Re: The Tettleton height issue.  Let me just remind you folks that Ohio's best ever QB, to date, on a per game basis, was Cleve (No-Coach) Bryant.  He made me, at 5 foot 10.5 inches, look like a giant.  He is much smaller than what you'll even read in the official Ohio stats.  He's smaller than Frank, as I recall, in terms of how much I have to look down when I'm standing next to him and engaging in personal conversation.  So a small QB (or RB in Frank's case) can do just fine if he's got the talent.

Let's also note that when Cleve played O-Linemen were not 6'4+ across the board like they are now.

I don't see QB height as a major issue. If Tettleton was not an athletic QB and was more of a drop back pro-style passer, sure, maybe it's a problem then. But we should have him rolling out and moving around, so the big wall in front of him won't be an issue.

True, but the relative height difference between the OL and QB was probably at least as great with Cleve, given his very small stature.  Tyler would tower over Cleve if they were ever photographed together.  I remember when Cleve had his first "meet and greet" as head coach he stood on a chair to talk to folks.  The thing that I remember most about Cleve's physique was the relative size of his hands compared to the rest of his body.  His hands looked like they belonged to a 8 foot giant.  He was a very good athlete -- probably one of the best we've ever had at Ohio.  Woody Hayes once told me that had never seen a QB who could throw better in the opposite direction to the direction he was running at top speed than Mr. Bryant.

In certain offenses, the (lack of) height of a QB can be marginalized on the condition that passing lanes are opened by the OL.  With a QB of non-ideal height, this will be the thing to watch.  In college, unlike the pros, a "shorter" QB is not a death knell.

Thanks for the Flutie flahback.  I can't of another athlete who has done so much with so little (absolutely no pun intended).  Definitely he is the poster boy for undersized QB's; but where is Doug Phelan who made the man?

All things being equal, a taller QB is a good thing, but things are never equal. There are lots of other important qualities for a good QB, such as good judgment, coolness under pressure, leadership, passing ability, etc.
