The article claims Penn State wasn't named Penn State until 1953. Really?

Kind of.  Founded as Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania in 1855, renamed to Agricultural College of Pennsylvania in 1862, then to Pennsylvania State College in 1874 and remained as such until 1953, when it became Pennsylvania State University.

So, it's been PSU since 1953, but Penn State for considerably longer.

Of the campuses on the list that I've had a chance to see...


Boone, NC - Breathtaking

State College, PA - Definitely worthy of this distinction

Chapel Hill, NC - Basically State College without the snow so also more than deserving

Ann Arbor, MI - Can't argue the fact that it's on the list...Can argue that it's listed above Athens though

Gainesville, FL - Meh...It was nice but Athletics clearly influenced this choice

Champaign / Urbana, IL - This had to be the author's Alma Mater

Though I agree with the vast majority of your posts, B36, I think that this type of "put down" is at the core of some of the bad-town gown relations.  Also, the population figures cited are woefully inaccurate, as I've posted before, because a huge number of students living in dorms and some in outside housing are not counted.  I have good information on this because my son has worked on the census.  The census bureau just doesn't know how to get an accurate student head count.  This is true, I'm sure, in all college towns but the affect is magnified in Athens because of the relatively small town population.

Charlottesville is #4 on the list behind Chapel Hill? I have been to both campuses and would say Charlottesville has a lot more to offer as a city. Chapel Hill has a few pretty buildings like you would find in Athens around the college green but its lacking the hilly terain and uptown Chapel Hill is unimpressive. The reason why Chapel Hill has the rep that it does is its the only decent campus in a large population state. NC State's campus is on par with Kent State. East Carolina the same deal. Virginia Tech I would even take over Chapel Hill, Blacksburg is in a very nice town right in the Blue Ridge mountains. Uptown VT is Miami-ish but its pretty solid. Charlottesville has a downtown area where they've closed off pedestrian traffic with about 20 top notch restaurants with contemporary atmosphere. My brother graduated from its law school and he was saying it was regarded as #2 in most campus publications behind Princeton.

You were there the last time the Bobcats were playing there right? What was that 1983? I've heard that atmosphere there is more like a top tier university these days.

You are right, Uncle Wes, I haven't been there for a long time, so it's possible my impression is out-dated; however, prejudices are hard to put aside even when one is presented with facts to the contrary.  It's also against board policy to base arguments on mere objective criteria.

I made my first ever visit to Charlottesville on Saturday after spending a good part of the day at Monticello. The campus area reminded me of Athens. It  had a similar feel in the commercial area next to campus. I felt very much at home. We had angus burgers at The Virginian and I'd love to go back there sometime -- maybe before or after an athletic contest pitting the Bobcats and Hoos.

As for State College, everyone I've ever known to visit has said it's hard to get there, but worth the experience. If schedules permit, I'll find out for myself when the Bobcats visit the Nittany Lions for football.

It isn't that hard -- compared to Athens anyhow.

In the half hour I was in State College, I thought it was quite a pretty campus.  Stop at the creamery and get ice cream if any of you all go.

There needs to be seperate list for Big Ten sized schools, mid sized, and small schools. Out of the Big Ten level schools my votes go to Texas because of the music scene in Austin and UCLA where you can surf after class. For the mid sized campuses #1 Virginia, #2 Ohio. I like Ohio's campus better but Charlottesville is better on the restaurants. Athens could use some work in that department and Zoe and Saleem are steps in the right direction. For the small schools I will go with Dartmouth and Pepperdine. When people pick schools badly they make decisions based on size but its quality relative to that size. For instance, people pick the University of Findlay over Bowling Green because its a smaller school but for a private school UF is bottom of the barrel while BG is solid for a mid-sized university. Another example is picking Youngstown State over Ohio State because it is too big. YSU is lousy for a mid-sized school, Ohio State is subpar for the Big Ten but is in a decent city.

When did being only a great college town become a liability?  Athens is the best.  I am glad that folks are finally figuring that out.
