Who's the Referee in the so-called National Championship game?

I've seen him in many MAC games in Athens and elsewhere. Anyone know his name? I think this is a Big 10-Dozen crew so this dude must work games in both leagues.

Where have you been? The Big10 and MAC are in an officials consortium where they train together, share supervisors and evaluative and move up through the ranks.

Jeff -- That's exactly what I thought. Great game, and then this weird rule where you can be lying horizontally on another player on the ground but your are not down ends up winning the game. Kind of like my Patriots and the tuck rule....

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

Was it Jets - Colts Saturday when the exact thing happened except that the runners "wrist" with the ball touched, therefore he was down? The rule has to be changed so that getting up after your tackler lets go of you is not a "continuation" of your run. Ridiculous.

There is nothing wrong with the rule, you are not tackled until you are down, which by rule is the touching of the ground with a body part other than the feet or hands. Not sure where the fluke was int that play? The defender essentially missed the tackle and quit on the play.

JCW, the U of O guy didn't give up on the play or "miss the tackle." He thought he had tackled the guy and let go. It was an error of judgement not a lack of hustle or athletic skill. At least that's the way it looked to me on several angles when replayed.

The rule as apparently applied and/or as stated by Wanny means that a guy with the ball can be stacked in the middle of a pile of tons of humanity--guys stacked up on top of him--but not down if a body part other than his hands or feets have not touched the ground.

Makes no sense.

Guys the rule has been around and enforced at ALL levels of football for more years than any of us have been around. You guys act like this is something new, and you once again show your vast knowledge of the game.

Monroe: In your example you would probably have a whistle for lack of forward progress, but the play is not down until either the runner touches the ground or when the whistle blows.

OCF: I will tell you exactly where the Oregon players went wrong, they failed to play til the whistle!! Hence they gave up on the play, as the Tiger player almost did, but his teammates had the sense to get him going again, while Oregon had their collective heads up their butts.

I think we all understand the rule and you don't have to have "vast knowledge" of the game to know that it was the correct call under said rule.
The issue here is how long does a tackler have to hold a ball carrier down ON TOP OF HIMSELF before the ref will blow the play dead. Does he have to lose consciousness from a lack of oxygen or will just turning blue do it? Or maybe it's wrestling and a reversal is needed before the tackler is awarded his point.

Bob, the ball carrier must has his forward progress stopped or be down, the Oregon player NEVER stopped forward progress, that play was continious motion, not even close to being stopped.

Here is the replay, Dyer's progress or momentum was never stopped, and he never touched the ground, this play isn't even controversial and happens every week around the country.

I'm in agreement with the championship game call, 100%....but I feel the whistle should have blown in that BG/Kent game. He clearly stopped his forward progress....but since they didn't blow the play dead, I'm 100% behind him getting up and scoring.

RYan, I will also agree that a strong argument could be made at the Kent game. However, by rule the contact is. What calls a runner down, not a whistle. In fact, officials will get in more trouble blowing their whistle than not blowing it.

Yeah I thought it was pretty funny when I saw it earlier this season at a site that covers MAC football.
