Ok I am finally posting my review, little late partly because I got swamped the past two days at work and secondly because I kind of wanted to stay away from the board for a little while.
First off the flight to and back from NOLA was pretty good, saw a good amount of Bobcats leaving Columbus at 11:45am on Friday and Cincy two hours later. Was even cool that I met a Board of Trustee member for Athletics and was able to get an early notice on the $10 million dollar donation. And even got lucky enough to miss getting scanned or groped at the airport!
I stayed at the Best Western St. Christopher, was a pretty nice place. Located nicely off of Canal St and decently close to Bourbon St. Continental Breakfast was alright, but better than not getting one. Had some nice brick accents in the room though, overall I would recommend it to anyone that visited.
NOLA was amazing, Bourbon St was a great time both nights, Royal St had some really cool antique stores and architecture. Aside from the whether at times the city really showed its great character. Really enjoyed the World War II D-Day museum, especially the 'Beyond the Boundaries' film narrated by Tom Hanks that they had. Was great to see that had some solid expansion plans in place, also found it nice that you could buy a brick to be placed in or around the museum memorialize anyone you knew that served during WWII. On a side note the taxi drivers in NOLA left alot to be desired, only had one good driver for our three rides. Took a tour of one of the Mardi Gras warehouses, was pretty cool to see everything, didn't realize that they have like a whole week of parades. Also cool to see and learn more about the behind the scenes stuff, especially on how people make it on the floats and the money they personally spend for it.
The Bash was nice, but wish it had been a little better, but for how much it cost I really can't complain. They had enough food to eat even if there wasn't much variety. Big negative was the drinks setup, kind of ridiculous that you needed to get in line for non-alcoholic beverages, was a good thing I got there early. Highlight was the impassioned speech by President Davis, too bad the players didn't get to see or hear it.
Alright on to the game, was pretty cool to finally see and step into the Superdome. Even with the low amount of fans it still had a pretty good atmosphere. However the team's play and coaching lacked alot, I was basically in a depressed mode for the rest of the game starting halfway through the 2nd quarter, not cool at all. Would really like to know all the details on the QB situation, because how it was handled didn't make sense. If you are gonna punish a kid please set a specific punishment. It made no sense how we would play Boo and then switch back to Bates, especially after Boo scored that first TD. The O-line was horrendous don't know what happened at the end of this year; injuries, lack of focus, lack of preparation? I knew missing Hodge would have an impact but I didn't realize that it would basically render our pass rush non-existent; even when we blitzed we didn't get to the QB. This then killed the secondary because they couldn't play tight man coverage due to the speed of Troy's players and the time the QB had. So every down it seemed like their WR's had at least 5 yards of space to make a catch and how we left so many guys open in the middle of the field is mind boggling, especially in the red zone. Also our DBs did not seem to have the ability to make a play on any deep throw, thats a killer. We were fully outplayed and outcoached by Troy. Also what happened to our bag of trick plays we would use occasionally, didn't see anything inventive during the game?
Ok last by not least a general review on Troy, fans seemed like great people and very nice, weren't obnoxious at all after the game. They had a nice turnout, but I wouldn't expect anything less when you live 4 hours from a good Bowl destination. Their band was actually pretty good and got a lot of participation from their fans, though their uniforms were not flattering at all. Their team looked like it had pretty good stock of talent, sounds like they should have done better this year if not for some up and down play at times, unfortunately for us they played up and we played way down.
I'm still on the Bobcat train after this one, mainly because of the progress we have made these past 6 years, but this team really needs to start showing up in the postseason.
