Would you like to see more non-conference games against P-5 or G5/FCS at the beginning of the season?

I would like for us to play bigger schools to help us out in conference play. There is a risk with injury bugs but overall I think it's better for the grand scheme of things.

If you are for it....who would you like to have a home/away game with?

I think we will continue to see 1 away P5, 1 home FCS, and a home game and an away game that are each part if home and home series against two G5s. It is what most G5s do because it is basically what the situation dictates.

We’re already booked up through 2024 so it will be post-Solich. I’m guessing that the new AD will be less concerned about the overall record and more concerned about raising more money for the athletics Dept, but who knows what she’ll do. We will have to see.
Anyway if it were me I would make sure that the G-5 games would be closer and not Wyoming-new Mexico st, Idaho, Louisiana, Texas st like we’ve done.
Don’t have a problem with the FCS game to start the season.
I see no particular reason to book top 25 programs to have certain losses.

We have two scheduled home P5 games in the next few years-- Syracuse in 2021 and Iowa State in 2023. Iowa State played here before in Year 1 of the Knorr Era and came away with a 3-point victory. That game was very well attended, and had the largest crowd of visitors I've ever seen at Peden, with the exception of a few Marshall games. ISU must have used it as an alumni event for graduates in a three-state area. Perhaps, they'll do that again.

Playing one of these bigger schools is ok if they fork out the cash. Some of these Ohio deals negotiated a few years ago didn't reap the cash that other smaller schools were paid. The Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, and ACC can afford to pay the little guys. Auburn paid $1.9 million and Wisconsin $1.1 million to Kent this season. According to Kent's AD, games next season against Bama, Kentucky and a yet to be announced Power five school will bring in roughly $5 million. Ga. Southern was paid $1.3 million to play Clemson in 2018. Eastern Michigan made $1 million for playing Illinois this season. In 2017 Ga. State was paid $1.2 million for playing Penn State. Akron got paid $1.4 million for playing at Northwestern in 2018. These are just a few examples of smaller schools getting paid. It appears some of these above schools negotiated better paying deals than Ohio has in the past. In 2015 ACC schools brought in over $22 million yearly per school. Big 12 schools made $25.3 million per school with SEC and Big Ten teams making a lot more than them. This was in 2015, so those numbers will be larger now.

If Kent was in FCS at best they would be getting 1.5 million total not 5 million for 3 games. There is too much money in it to go FCS as Alan suggests as a legitimate option.

High level G5 series against programs that play in stadiums larger than 30,000 are good too. Louisiana, Marshall and Cincinnati all fit that bill. FAU was signed with Lane Kiffin as coach but is not bad. Some others to consider are Southern Miss, Temple, East Carolina, Arkansas St, SMU, Memphis.

Arkansas would be a nice home/away if they decided they didn't want to shell out the guarantee money which BTW is tied more to home revenue than TV money. That is why some lower tier P5's are still agreeing to home/away with G5 and why those like Alabama are more than comfortable paying up for an extra game because of the gate revenue. Kent as we know played a murderer's row but surprised a few people while doing and turned around to become bowl eligible out of the MAC. It helps more getting programs down to your stadium that people are interested in seeing to build longer term support. Stands in Kent were empty this year so nobody wanted to see the dragon killer that played on national TV.

It may end up being more a forced reality in these times of deep budget cuts and a widening gap in D 1 than a "legitmate option." We'll see what happens when the second semester begins and if there is any traction with the protests of faculty and students.

As Wes says, and as L.C. has posted many times, dropping to FCS to save money is fools gold. There is much more revenue, even for MAC schools, at the FBS level -- particularly the play off money ($1 million a year) and the ESPN revenue. The only real way to save money on football would be to drop to Div III, or join the Pioneer League for non-scholarship FBS. I don't see either of those happening.

It's my understanding that the amount schools get paid for the "buy" games is correlated to the chances of winning. I think part of the reason Ohio doesn't get as much as Akron, for example, is the power 5 schools would rather have a more certain win.

I see where you're going here. Maybe us knocking off a few schools in the past have deterred ADs from Power 5s to question whether they want to play us or not.

As a fan I enjoy watching Syracuse or Iowa State play in Peden, but financially it does not make sense. The university makes no money on a 1-1 deal and the attendance won't be any better than a Marshall-Ohio home game. Play Iowa State on the road and bring home over $1 million. It is my hope that eventually the power five schools start paying the MAC, Sun Belt AND CUSA teams more than what they are making currently.

I see that in 2022 we are playing 3 "Buy" games, and FAU

FAU
@ Penn State
@ Iowa St.
@ Rutgers

Hopefully with a Junior-level Kurtis Rourke we can be competitive in a couple of those.

I see this in 2022.

09/03 - Florida Atlantic
09/10 - at Penn State
09/17 - at Iowa State
09/24 - Fordham

Note that the Iowa St. game is not a buy game. Since a P5 was willing to do a home and home this is just the road game part of that for us. Usually there are 2 G5 opponents which are 1 home game and 1 road game on the schedule each as part of a home and home series. We had Kansas recently and have Syracuse and Iowa St. coming up as home and home series. Those are years where 2 P5, 1 G5 and 1 FCS show up on the schedule instead of the normal 2 G5, 1 P5 and 1 FCS.

I'd love to see more regional games ... whether that's home games vs P5 teams or road games vs P5 or G6 teams

Pitt, UVa, Va Tech, Tennessee have bee good recent ones. Same for Northwestern, Penn St, llinois, Kentucky, Louisville and Purdue.

Maybe Indiana, Michigan St, Iowa, WVU, NC St, UNC, Duke, Maryland???

As far as G6 teams ... Memphis, Old Dominion, WKU, MTSU, Ark St, ECU, Coastal Carolina??

I like having a realistic option of traveling to road games.

BC is nice ... but far. Same with Syracuse.

Someone a while back said a home/away with Indiana would be good. I wasnt particularly feeling it at the time...but now that Indiana is competitive.....doesnt sound bad. Plus Bloomington is not bad at all.

If we can replace Fordham with a regional team like BShot44 said......this would be a great schedule. Instead of Fordham let's replace them with Maryland or VA Tech (after Foster is done, lol).

Sure why we are dreaming, let's replace Fordham with Clemson or Georgia. That would be a fabulous idea. Those first four non league games would be fantastic. Not only would the Bobcats get paid a bunch of money, they would probably be favored in all of those games. Be realistic! Why does Ohio basketball schedule Rio, Wilbenforce, Detroit Mercy, Prairie View, Northwestern Ohio, Heidelberg, Alabama A@M , Tenn. Tech and Morehead St? They pay them to come to the Convo so the Bobcats can get wins. Period!

Actually, I would like to see the Bobcats play one money away game with a power five school like Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, etc. and one home game yearly with an FCS school. The other two games could be split home and away with teams like Marshall, Western Ky, Charlotte, UAB, Tulane, Temple, Army, UMass, East Carolina, Middle Tenn. and Old Dominion. I have no problem with scheduling Marshall four out of every six seasons as this close rivalry is a good one and fans travel well to both stadiums. UAB played a money game at Tennessee this season and also faced Alabama St, at Akron and South Alabama in 2019. La. Tech played at Texas, hosted Grambling and UMASS and at Bowling Green. Those are two examples of scheduling I would prefer. I think La. Tech earned $1.1 million for going to Texas. The schools like Michigan, Texas and ND can afford to give up more than a million to play MAC type schools.

Given the way the budget is headed, I can see the FCS game going away, replaced by a road game against a P5, with Ohio dropping back to 5 home games a year.

I would like to see us schedule to play Michigan simply out of the fact that we have never played them before in football.

These schedules can get changed as UC Bearcats were supposed to play in Athens in 2021, now it got moved to 2026. I am wondering if it will ever happen. It seems nothing is set in stone, especially if a team can get a better deal elsewhere.
