I'm watching Pitt and Virginia right now, and Pitt looks very, very mediocre. Their offense looks, well, pretty undeveloped to describe it best, and it's even more predictable than I expected it to be. They want to run, and when they can't, their passing game looks pretty poor. Their defense looks so-so at times, but their heads could be spinning trying to slow down Ohio's explosive and versatile offense. I fully expect Ohio to beat Pitt next week, and I don't care what line Vegas puts out, when Ohio wins, it won't be an upset.

We had an FCS team at home. They threw for almost 300 yards on us, nearly matched our first down total and held the ball for a lot of the game. I don’t think today’s performance is any reason to start boasting.

You clearly didn't see the Pitt-UVa game then.

I concur. After being at OHIO's game and seeing lots of potential and a few stupid mistakes, on the way back to Cleveland I listened to the Pitt - Virginia game. I feel pretty good about our chances. Pitt was unremarkable, and other than their hit-or-miss quarterback, I didn't think anyone stood out, offense or defense. Just an old alum's two cents here.

My impression of Pickett is that he's not a very accurate passer, but a good runner, but not nearly as good as Rourke. He just doesn't have the moves that Rourke has. I think Tuggle can run north and south on Pitt, and that TUM will be a successful play. I think Frank will go 2-0 against Pitt on Saturday.

What if the OU’s coaching staff didn't use most of the playbook today? So that Pitt doesn’t have film on some of the plays they feel like are “home run hitters”. It seemed like they didn’t take big shots down field at all today. It was mostly runs or short passes.

Russell made an even more interesting observation on the air (I always listen to his calls when I'm at the game), and he said at one point we were running plays we probably wouldn't run again the whole year just to confuse our next opponent. Made 'em prepare for things we are not planning to do. That's one better than just not using all the playbook. The more I thought about, the more it seemed to me that Frank was certainly clever enough to do something like that, though he'd never admit it in public!

I noticed today we only ran the option a couple of plays. I think Ohio was deliberately holding off on running it. When we start running it, watch out.

We weren't impressed with Virginia either last year coming off their loss at Indiana. Watched part of the UVa-Pitt game and Pitt didn't look all that impressive but what I did notice was a completely different type of athlete, particularly on defense than what we saw from Rhode Island. Going to have to play well.

Its one thing to lose 50-34 on a few turnovers and its another to go down at a score of 30-14 where team isn't putting the points on the board. With Rourke that gives the Cats an edge to scratch out a win in the second half. Say what you want about the URI performance as less than dominant but it was average for Solich who never thrashes the FCS opponent they way he should. The third quarter point explosion was still there from last season when they needed to put the game away.

Apples and Oranges. Neither Pitt's loss nor Ohio's win tells me anything at all about how these two will do against one another. Ohio is not supposed to beat Pitt on paper, but that is why they play the game, so to speak. My hope in games like these is that Ohio does not sustain damaging injuries that impact us down the road. I put far more importance in competing at a high level in the MAC as opposed to pulling off a non-conference upset. In fact, I hate these early season one-sided games, and I wish the NCAA would punish Power 5 Conference teams in the rankings for participating in them.

Why should he thrash them? He pulled the starters and let the second team play for much of the third and fourth quarter. Ohio needs to build depth, so it is good to get them in the game.

Wtf? Phil Steele has Pitt and Ohio about even in his power poll which factors in recruiting and unit experience. On paper this is supposed to be a competitive game. Ohio is ranked #34 in his preseason poll where Pitt is not even in the Top 60 figuring they play in a tougher conference. Talent is even but Ohio's got the better "team" and I wouldn't be surprised if we beat Pitt by 3 TDs if they make mistakes.

Football season must be in full swing when you have people infering vanilla play calls and using trickery to defeat an FCS school.

Pitt's new OC is Mark Whipple, the former UMass coach whose teams put up 92 pts against us the last two years. I'm sure he's on the hot seat this morning and will really need to prove himself next week.

They are putting in a new offense. It will no doubt continue to improve as the year goes on.

Pretty much agree on all counts, particularly about comparing results of games and holding down injuries.

Uncle Wes I sure hope you are correct by a three TD victory, but Vegas has the Panthers favored by almost a TD for a reason. A 3 point win for Ohio would be great, but don't bet the farm on it.
