Ohio Football kicks off the 2019 season on August 31st with the weight of Mid-American Conference title expectations on their shoulders. To achieve that goal, they’ll have to run through a formidable slate of quarterbacks blocking the path to glory.

Rhode Island – TBD

Last year’s starter Jajuan Lawson received his diploma, so the Rams have a wide-open battle raging at the position right now. Expect to see a bevy of names under center at Peden Stadium as head coach Jim Fleming continues to evaluate his options before CAA action gets underway. Vito Priore should get the first snaps, the Atlanta native started four games for Rhode Island last year and impressed in the team scrimmage, tossing three touchdowns.

Pitt – Kenny Pickett

Is he a potential Heisman candidate like Tyler Palko? frown cool

Well, that was what some Pitt folks were saying until the 2005 Ohio game.  indecision blush

Since the article is discussing the PFF article so much, it would've been beneficial to mention that we have a Top 20 QB according to the site. That's pretty impressive. OCF, I know your historical knowledge of the school is much more comprehensive than mine and most, but I feel that if Rourke can put together a MAC Championship and a legendary season, he could go down as our most accomplished QB of all time.

Does he need a MAC championship to cement that? I feel like another year with the same numbers he's been at would statistically launch him far beyond any Ohio quarterback. He might already be the best QB in Bobcat history.

The best QBs lead their teams to championships, plain and simple. If Ohio is able to win the MACC this year with Rourke at the helm, then for sure he's Ohio's all-time best QB, IMHO. Until that happens, I'd have to go with Cleve Bryant.

I think the jury is still out about the best QB in OHIO history. And, of course, it depends on what criteria you use. My top choices, using a variety of criteria in my own idiosyncratic way (not in any order):

*Cleve Bryant (conference championship), could throw the ball against the grain better than any QB I've ever seen. (concurred on by Woody Hayes in personal interview)

*Bucky Wagner (national championship). Probably leads in no statistical category, but he knew how to distribute the ball and when to keep it. Made things happen. Great chemistry with teammates.

*Nathan Rourke (pending conference championship) Best running QB in Ohio history and already leads in at least one statistical category -- most rushing TDs in a single season (21) by any player, not just QBs.

*Arthur Carr (likely first African American QB at a predominantly white university). His teams did not do well on the field (.333 in 1903, and .357 in 1904), victories coming over Gallipolis Athletic Club, Mercer Business College (twice) and Athens High School (Carr's alma mater). But, I give credit for his trailblazing accomplishments. https://tinyurl.com/y66hlchm
