Last year, the NCAA started new redshirt rules that allow players to appear in a select number of games (I think 3, but could be off) and still retain their redshirt. Do you know if that is for players who actually take the field or is it for players who are just designated to dress? I'm thinking of Kurtis Rourke in this scenario. If he's named the back-up QB but does not take the field that often, can he keep his redshirt if he's the primary backup but stays on the sideline?

I think the number was actually 4, but irregardless of the number, this should continue to be helpful to the Bobcats. I think it is especially beneficial once we get into league play as some of the upper classmen suffer potential injuries. Hopefully the freshmen have been working hard up to that point and can be a contributor, even though they may be officially redshirting.

I think it is 4 games and I think dressing doesnt count as long as you dont go into the game. I can see Kurtis getting in a few of the preseason games if we have a good lead.

Right, he can dress every game, but as long as he plays four or less games, he keeps his year of eligibility. So if he truly earns the backup job, I'd expect the coaches would be very picky about putting him in to try to save that extra year.

College football does not have “preseason” games.

No, but we sure have plenty of petulant posts. "Pre-conference" games okay?
