It's a great day to be Mike Johnson and Real Jeff McKinney! The Shelby Fighting Mikes and the Warren Fighting Jeffs/RobCs finished first and third respectively in the Boys' Ohio Division 2 State Track Meet. In the Girls' State Meet, Warren had a young lady finish first in the pole vault...

Warren finished second in the state meet several years ago. Have to brag a little on the alma mater of Rob C and me.

Thinclads, Harriers, all oddly slugged non-revenue team sports with individual honors, Unite! Nice work.

Again, Jeff, how is Warren so consistently irrelevant in Football? Seemingly no excuse for it.

BA rules! Nice to hear about all of these laurels for Mikes & the Jeffs/Robs! ;-)

Thanks for the shoutout, Jeff. This championship wasn't Shelby's first state track title. It won back to back titles in 2003 and 2004. And in 2004 both Shelby teams - boys and girls - won state titles, the first time in Ohio history that one school won both the boys and girls championships. (This info comes courtesy of a Shelby math teacher who is the track teams' self-described "big fan.")

Congratulations.

The running aspect is up my alley. The pole vault is more alien/impressive!

I've seen crazier things happen.

The OHSAA state track meet has always been fascinating to me. Along with perhaps wrestling, it seems to be one of the only sports that, while you start off fielding a team to compete in every race/competition (discus, jumps etc.) the team gets smaller progressing through the different rounds of competition.

In a lot of cases, the team that wins the state title may have only brought in a few relay teams, a jumper or two, a couple of middle or long distance runners. But if these teams/individuals perform at high enough of a level, they total enough to win the title-especially when you get below D1. I also love when some of the fastest times/highest marks come from athletes from the lower divisions.

Insightful post. This year's Shelby team had 14 members. In the 3,200 meter run, Shelby lads finished 1st and 4th. Its 4X800 relay team finished 1st. Another lad finished 3rd in the high jump.

I remember another year - decade or so ago - when Shelby twins both finished 1st in different events. Both earned track scholarships - if I recall correctly to Michigan and Notre Dame.

Some nice athletic genes in that family! When I was a student at Ohio we had a player on the ladies' soccer team who was a friend of mine who had a twin sister who played for George Washington. It was featured in the Post as the two teams played one season-perhaps even USA Today?
