EMU allows GAS QB 33 yard passing and loses. Really. GAS kicks field goal with 0:02 on the clock.

They had the game sowed up and they call a 3 man rush on 4th and 17 to a non throwing QB. Unbelievable!

You realize Ga Southern only attempts 9 passes per game amd averages about 82 yards per game passing? They are modern edition of Grobe/Ohio circa late 90s.

They only threw 7 passes the entire game vs EMU. So "holding them to 33 yards" isn't really what it appears or maybe what you're implying.

They also ran the ball down EMUs throat for 331 yards and never trailed until final 333.

Sometimes you have to look a little deeper than the surface.

Imagine bshott44's reaction had this been Ohio not EMU. Going into games you plan to, hope to make the opponent one dimensional. Going in GAS ranked 129th nationally in passing, 114th nationally in total offense. You have to make them beat you passing. Still GAS did beat App State completing only one pass, helped that it was 57 yards for a TD. Yet, 4th and long, you have them passing and not contain the QB out of the pocket. Hate to sound like bshott44, but, you have to make that play.

1. Yes. That play was an utter debacle for EMU. They had a triple option team in shotgun formation on 4th & forever and couldn't make the play. I'm stunned bcat2 doesn't shower Ga Southern with praise and adulation tho ... what happened to giving credit to your opponent? Either way, both teams can walk off the field with their heads held high because they provided great efforts. Isn't that right, bcat2? Only thing that matters. Bowl wins are overrated. All wins are overrated.

2. I have no idea what you're talking about in terms of trying to make Ga Southern one dimensional. Ummm. They already are one dimensional. They had the second least amount of pass attempts of any team in FBS ahead of only Army. Your gameplan vs them would be trying to force them to pass??? And how do you suppose you're going to force a team that averages 8 pass attempts a game into that? Your blanket philosophy on defense doesn't work here. You don't try to force an triple option team to pass. You just learn how to defend the option. That's the only defense against a team like that.

My point is that you have an incredibly speedy QB and u drop eight on a 4th and 17. Not a last second hail mary play. He burnt them on two 4th downs. That was a bad D-Coordinator call.

Amen. I was watching with my daughter. When I saw the 3-man rush forming, I said, "Well, will we again see the Prevent Defense become the Prevent Victory Defense?"

I find it remarkable that head coaches/DCs continue employing that defense. EMU, playing its 56-minute defense, had GS in that 4th and long dilemma. Then it switches to Prevent Victory and says, "Merry Christmas!"

When a team has a defense working effectively, the logical thing to do is to force the other team to beat that defense. The illogical thing to do is to change it to something else. The most illogical thing of all is to back the defense off, and give the other team room to run successful plays, which is what the "prevent (victory) defense" does. I find it remarkable that anyone uses it, especially considering how often it is a complete disaster. When it results in a loss, which it often does, I feel no sympathy at all for the team that uses it. EMU got what they deserved.

The Browns didn’t use a prevent defense last night when Denver had a 4th and 10 and Jabril Peppers sacked Case Keenum, thereby ending the game.

I do love watching Georgia Southern's option offense. It is prettier than a lot of them out there. Can still remember when it hung 60 on BGSU

Very good comparison to the question at hand.

I don't know how many times I've seen the prevent victory defense live up to its name. I agree with L.C. that it should almost never be employed. Maybe with 30 seconds to go and the other team on their own ten yard line, but otherwise "dance with the one that brung ya."

I still think about Kordell Stewart and the BUFFs running on the field at the Big House. I was a pre-teen and even then I was like why give him room to set up in a pocket and launch it. Just use the 4 man rush you have been doing all day and sub a LB out for an additional safety. Even the Patriots had a debacle this year with prevent Defense. Too many good QBs today to play that Defense. Aaron Roger's smiles at prevent Defense.

To be fair, Gregg Williams also can be like a first grader playing Madden and start mashing the button that dials up cover zero blitzes. I admire the guts, but as Browns fans remember from the Todd Grantham era, it can also get you torched if you don't have the personnel to pull it off.

Also, Tim Tebow in the NFL. He would accomplish nothing all game passing the ball until the 4th quarter, then they would start playing prevent. He would get time to throw, do a whole bunch of checkdowns, move the ball down the field and get into a rhythm. And Tebow's team would win. Then they would marvel at his "comeback" ability.
