Props to Jimmy Burrow and coach DeAngelo Smith for the development of several new corners and safeties.
The corners are all very young with the exception of Fox. Hudson, Drake, the Motley twins and Brooks have all been getting playing time. They are RS Freshmen, with the exception of Hudson who is a true Sophomore. It is a very athletic and heady group. There could be a few others on the roster that are true Freshman and could wind up as corners. This position is in good hands for the future.

The safeties are led by Nelson who is a senior. Javon Hagan announced he is returning along with underclassmen Hampton, Floyd and Mitchell. I am pretty sure there is one or more true Freshmen that are being redshirted. This is also set for the future.
You will also notice there is a special camaraderie within the group which celebrates each others success during games.
Nice to see.

No way is it set for the future, we rank 100+ against the pass. I look forward to seeing what Burchette and Wood can do. Drake looks like he needs more playing time. Hudson needs to work on finding the ball, Motley is ok, he needs to work on his tackling. Brooks needs to get a step faster and work on his consistency. The DB coach needs to be terminated or put on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) program. Even the medi's want to be top 75, come on. We are worst in the MAC and 114th overall and we did not really face any prolific passers. https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/695/p3

Things seemed to get better when Mr. Fox returned from injury. He is a RS Sr. and will be done after the bowl. He will be missed. WRs are getting bigger and more athletic every year. DBs just have got to get them to the ground. It is encouraging that Ohio finished tops in the MAC in interceptions and turnover margin. Those DBs contributed to that. Also, I thought Tremayne Scott was back, but, 88 and 84 are dropping into lanes like he did. Nice to see 84 with the int. The defense did not reload from the losses of the 2017 seniors. Did not expect they would. Still it is critical to get those stud WRs to the ground.

I agree that there's much concern about the secondary for next year. They improved through the middle part of the season (Fiami beat us with mostly dinks and dunks -- the longest pass play was for 33 and nothing else beyond 21). But then getting hit for 356 yds, including a 50-yarder, by Akron seemed to show a step back. If we land someone like Houston in the bowl game, it might be tough on our secondary.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.

Tackling and coverage have plagued this unit for a while.

Hagan might be an all-MAC performer ... but watch the attempts to tackle here. It's a fundamental thing more than an inability to tackle:

This has been a staple of Ohio DBs for a while now ... the either inability or refusal to turn their head in coverage ... and poor tackling

I think you get the point. While these are obviously a small sample size ... you can see that it's an ongoing thing with the secondary.

Rated 6th in MAC for conference only games in 2018 final stats. First in interceptions.
Group is VERY young and hopefully will be at the top of the conference in years to come.
Tackling is a problem everywhere in NCAA and NFL.

That we can 1000% agree on.

It's an epidemic. Awful across the board.

Simple fundamentals.

I watched Alabama this wknd and was impressed by their DBs and ability to wrap up and tackle rather than just try to knock someone's head off.

Fox graduating could be addition through subtraction. Always thought he was sort of a liability.

They are last in the MAC in passing yards allowed, not 6th. We are 6th in the MAC in total defense.

He had talent but he never really looked confident, he got turned around the most. I wish that he could have showed better to get a better shot at playing in the NFL.

He was referring to MAC-only games: https://static.getsomemaction.com/custompages/stats/2018F...

If you take out the non-conference games, Ohio's defense performed very well as a whole and even the secondary play rated at least average.

Tackling is definitely an issue, but I know for a fact these guys beat themselves up over it.... after watching College football and the NFL all weekend, it is definitely an issue EVERYWHERE. I see quite a few missed tackles and hope they get better next season. I feel pretty good about a young secondary, and won’t single anyone out... that’s just tacky to me. Go Bobcats......

I am high on Tariq Drake, he is undefeated in coverage. He may need to gain some weight but he has great speed and athleticism and seems like a willing tackler. I am anxious to see what Burchette can do as well. He traveled some games, I hope he and Drake get a series or two in the bowl games. Hudson may be a good free safety and I liked what I saw from Hampton, but it was a limited sample size. Brooks is very competitive and feisty, he is like Joe Haden in his recent years, he either makes the play or he gets toasted, but I could see him becoming a good player, that being said these players need to be challenged and they need better coaching. Hagan knows his potential, he needs to get a step faster and finish his tackles. This will be a pivotal winter and spring for him. If he can keep his weight and get to running a sub 4.5 40, he could get drafted.
