Cleveland, Ohio – A total of 38 repeat selections from last year’s All-MAC teams highlight the 2018 postseason football awards in the Mid-American Conference as Buffalo, Northern Illinois and Toledo swept the annual awards.

Northern Illinois junior defensive end Sutton Smith was tabbed as the winner of the 37th Vern Smith Leadership Award as the top player in the MAC and was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.  Buffalo Head Coach Lance Leipold was selected as the MAC Head Coach of the Year, while Bulls junior quarterback Tyree Jackson was named MAC Offensive Player of the Year and Bulls running back Jaret Patterson was selected as the MAC Freshman of the Year. Toledo junior kickoff returner and punt returner Diontae Johnson was named MAC Special Teams Player of the Year.

2018 MAC Specialty Award Winners
Coach of the Year:  Lance Leipold, Buffalo
Offensive Player of the Year:  QB Tyree Jackson, Buffalo
Defensive Player of the Year:  DE Sutton Smith, Northern Illinois
Special Teams Player of the Year: KR/PR Diontae Johnson, Toledo
Freshman of the Year:  RB Jaret Patterson, Buffalo
Vern Smith Leadership Award Winner:  DE Sutton Smith, Northern Illinois

Leipold is in his fourth season in leading the Buffalo program and has the Bulls in the Marathon MAC Football Championship Game for the first time since 2008.  Leipold has led the program to its first-ever 10-win season since making the move to FBS and joining the MAC in 1999. Leipold has the Bulls bowl eligible for the second consecutive season as the program’s win total has increased from two wins in 2016, six wins in 2017 and 10 wins in 2018.

Smith, a native of St. Charles, Mo., exploded on the college football scene in 2017 and led the nation in both sacks and tackles for loss as a sophomore as he earned consensus All-American status.  Smith responded once again with another special season as he has started in all 12 games this season and ranks fourth in the nation with 13.0 sacks and sixth in the country with 21.0 tackles for loss. He ranks sixth on the Huskies with 46 tackles and is tied for the lead in the MAC with four forced fumbles and three recovered fumbles. Smith has added two blocked kicks as well. Smith is part of a NIU defense that ranks first in the MAC in total defense (344.0 ypg), scoring defense (20.9 ppg) and rush defense (107.0 ypg) as the Huskies posted a 7-5 overall record and their first West Division title since 2015.  NIU is now bowl eligible for the 10th time in the last 11 years.

Jackson, a native of Norton Shores, Mich., started all 12 games this season for Buffalo and led the Bulls offense with 2,605 yards passing and 25 touchdowns on his 187-337 passing for a 55.5 completion percentage. His 2,605 yards and 25 passing touchdowns both rank second in the MAC.

Patterson, a native of Glendale, Md., led Buffalo and ranked fifth in the MAC with 874 yards rushing and his 12 touchdowns were tied for third in the league. Patterson appeared in all 12 games as a freshman and averaged 5.8 yards per carry and averaged 72.8 yards per game.

Johnson, a native of Ruskin, Fla., led the MAC in punt return average with 18.3 yards per return on 12 returns for 220 yards and one touchdown, an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown at Kent State on Nov. 15.  Johnson also ranked second in the league with a 25.8 kickoff return average on his 16 returns for 412 yards and one touchdown, a 98-yard kickoff return for a score.  For his career, Johnson has four returns for touchdowns – two punt returns and two kickoff returns.

Buffalo and Ohio led the way in 2018 with six First-Team selections, followed by Central Michigan with four First-Team selections and Northern Illinois and Toledo with three First-Team honorees. Overall, Buffalo set the pace with 11 All-MAC honorees, followed by Eastern Michigan and Toledo with 10 All-MAC selections and NIU and Ohio with nine All-MAC honorees.

Northern Illinois senior offensive tackle Max Scharping was the only three-time First Team All-MAC honoree in this year’s honors. There were eight students named to their second First Team All-MAC selection:  wide receiver Anthony Johnson (Buffalo), wide receiver and punt returner Diontae Johnson (Toledo), wide receiver Cody Thompson (Toledo), inside linebacker Khalil Hodge (Buffalo), inside linebacker Malik Fountain (Central Michigan), defensive end Sutton Smith (Northern Illinois) and defensive end Maxx Crosby (Eastern Michigan).

Kind of disappointing Rourke wasn't the MAC Offensive Player of the Year and first-team quarterback, though I sort of expected it. Rourke's performance was without a doubt better than Jackson's.

Jackson 187-337 55.5% 2605 yards 25 TDs, 11 INTs, 167 rushing yards, 7 TDs
Rourke 154-252 61.1%, 2208 yards, 22 TDs, 6 INTs, 816 rushing yards, 13 TDs

It's a joke, to be honest, though unsurprising. The MAC is notorious for voting for the conference winners for awards. They really seem to care less about who the best player is for the award. Same applies in basketball year after year.

How is Rourke not first team? Irons couldn’t make at least third team. Congrats to the 9 players that made it. I knew we would have at least 6, three on the O/line, we may lose our O-line coach. Papi got his due, way to go Cats

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Thanks for the side-by-side on this. I was thinking the same thing. How does a QB who is fifth in the nation in total TDs the last two seasons, in the top 15 in the nation in passing efficiency and in the top 20 in yards per carry not get first-team?

Also, Zervos is in the top 25 in scoring in the nation. Snubbed.

You forgot one stat:

Jackson: 1 MAC East Title
Rourke: 0 MAC East Title.

Winning. Matters.

I don't think anyone who watched MAC football this year could disagree that Rourke was the best QB in the league.

The other thing that hurt him was the mulligan he took in the opener vs. Howard. Toss in another 200 yards passing and a few more TDs and his numbers across the board would be even better.

And I know how much everyone loves the what-if game ... but if Ohio doesn't lose that game at NIU ... good chance Rourke isn't just first-team QB ... he's MAC Player of the Year

Simple: He lost twice as many conference games as Jackson.

Voters are placing value on championships. You can debate whether that's fair or not, but it seems to be the case.

He also had a down passing day vs Akron in the last game of the season, despite his good rushing day. People remember what you did last more than other performances ("What have you done for me lately?").

I wonder when was the last time Ohio had more offensive all-MAC players than defensive.

Already lost the Oline coach that recruited and put this group together.

I understand the division winner gets a little bit of an edge but Rourke was so much better than Jackson that it shouldn't matter. And beyond that, in the head-to-head game, Rourke was 100 times better than Jackson.

Do we know how the players are selected? Is this a vote of coaches? Media? Some guys in a room in Cleveland? The conference website doesn't disclose the selection process.

I agree winning should matter, but how did 1-10 Central Michigan get four on first team defense?

While I get that winning matters, the award is not for "Winningest QB of the Year", is it? It's a damn shame this is the way these awards go, but they always seem to.

What's more, if you look at just MAC stats, taking out the non-league games, Jackson was 7th in the MAC in passing efficiency. He threw 12 touchdowns with 8 interceptions in MAC play. Rourke of course was first by a lot in efficiency in MAC play. That doesn't even factor in what Rourke did running the ball.

Also, Irons should be on there somewhere. He led the league in yards per carry and was fourth in yards per game.

Arkley tweeted that the media votes for the specialty awards and the coaches do the 1st, 2nd, 3rd team awards.

He also said the voting was done before the last game and that he voted for Rourke as Offensive Player of the Year. If the vote was after the last game, he may have switched his vote to Ouellette.

I'll never forgive the travesty that was Michael Bramos winning MAC POY in basketball. Since then I try not to take too much stock in these "awards."

I revert to my original comment, which is what is the award for? It is not a team success awards, and it's not for winningest QB or offensive player of the year. If it were, then there's no argument they got it right. If they wanted the awards to be truly meaningful, they'd vote based on the player's success, and the influence he has on a game as an individual. In this instance, to me, the wrong player (who is still very good) won the award. But it's typical, and I'm not surprised.

While I get that winning matters, the award is not for "Winningest QB of the Year", is it? It's a damn shame this is the way these awards go, but they always seem to.

Agreed, but to the victor goes the spoils.

Bingo.

Totally agree with you. But this is what happens when you let coaches vote for these teams. They're not watching every game. They just know who's on top of the divisions. Or they let their media relations person fill out their ballot.
