The loyalty to assistants doing the same thing year after year is Frank's flaw. Who keeps GOOD assistants this long?

Pretty sure Frank’s assistants did not miss FG’s or run out the back of the EZ. Team was in a position to win, that is coaches job. Players at some point have to execute.

+1

And, I plus one it it there and will do the same again. This was not a loss that was on the coaches, like the UC loss. The players bear the major responsibility here, IMHO.

I disagree. Miami out-schemed us. they were ready for everything and we had no counter until it was too late. This was a woefully underprepared team.

Kick gets caught in the wind (it curved) and we get pinned on the line and then run it out of the back. That's 5 points right there. If we never safetied then our defense would have shut them out in the second half while scoring 3 times. That doesn't sound bad at all. Shut up.

The opposing team sucks!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Yeah .... players certainly deserve their fair share for this loss. No question.

But was it the players that opened the game with 12 straight runs ... and then called 7 straight passes?

And then down 21 points, take 30+ seconds every play to get the play call in?

They wasted 2 minutes to run three plays that resulted in a safety.

Don't think those two minutes would've come in handy?

Ragland was dissecting them in the 1H on four straight possessions ... where was the adjustment?

Admittedly, the defense played a little better in the 2H ... but a big reason for that was because Chuckie Martin puckered up and tried to take the air out of the ball as soon as the 2H started. He did his best to gift-wrap that game for Ohio.

The Ohio coaching staff did NOT put that team in position to win. Miami did. A botched punt opened the door. Without that, Ohio is still back there letting the play clock crawl under 10 seconds before snapping the ball down 21 points.

That was a typical November egg from this program. Just like Akron & Buffalo last year ... just like CMU in 2016 ... BG in 2015 ... UB, BG & Kent in 2013 ... Kent, Ball & BG in 2012 ... Kent in 2010

But, please, tell us how none of those were the coaches fault either?

Nor was the NIU loss this season that put Ohio in position to have to win 6 straight to end the year to get to MAC title game? 14-point 4th quarter leads are hard to hold on to.

Gimmie a break.

7-5 (5-3) .... book it.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Same thing every year. But it's not the coaches fault. Nope.

And the botched punt by Miami is offset by Cox's fumble. It's a wash. LOL

What?!? The botched punt led directly to a TD. Literally.

The Cox fumble gave Miami the ball where they then went on a 5-play, 48 yard drive ... with Ohio allowing a 19 and 21 yard completion and an easy 8-yard TD run.

How are those offset?

The lengths people go to to protect the Solich name. Goodness. Is he ever to blame for anything?

And how about that onside kick decision? Brutal.

If we kick away and they go 3-and-out, we likely get the ball on about our 35 or 40 with 30 seconds left, instead of getting it on our 10.

Which puts us in field-goal range on the final play.

That's on Louie Zervos. I'm sure he audibled into the onside kick. Frank would never make that decision.

Nope.

Miami had done nothing but thrown up all over themselves offensively in the 2H ... but let's give them the ball at midfield rather than their own 25.

Not the coaches fault.

Plenty of blame to go around.

Highly dramatic, highly disappointing game. If only we could have played a better first half and readjusted our offense to account for the fact that Miami was stuffing our speed options. What happened to the tunnel screens to Papi?

Rourke is often a rhythm throwing QB and he never got the chance to develop that in the first half. Our WRs must have been blanketed down field. Rourke looked way too hesistant in the pocket. There were several plays where he held the ball too long and couldn't make the decision to throw or scramble.

It's amazing we even had a shot to win this at the end. As someone else said, Fiami tried to give this one away. That damn lucky perfect punt leading to a safety was the most predictable thing I've seen ever. I knew it was coming and again, was an example of Rourke holding the ball too long unable to make the choice to throw or scramble.

Oh well. This loss fits the script of what I expected. I thought we'd go 1-2 against WMU/Fiami/Buffalo and that seems to be how it's shaping up.

7-5 if we're lucky, honestly. We could easily lose to Akron. Tantilizing loss. Very sad!

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

If this was Saul's team people would be roasting him. The double standard here is laughable. Destination Mid-Mediocrity. Where is allen when I need him?

I'll accept the players have to execute BS when it's not a trend of Ohio football collapsing in games they need to win. It's like watching Marvin's Bengals with different colors at a different level.

Who needs tickets next week?

Onside kicks work less than 20 percent of the time so that was a huge gamble by Frank. Ohio didn't get anywhere close to recovering which made the decision look particularly ill advised. It shouldn't be attempted unless there is good reason to think your team can execute. Alabama behind by 8 in the 4th at home to one of the lessor SEC team, that sort of thing where there is an overwhelming talent advantage.

I put this one squarely on the shoulders of the coaches. Defense didn’t adjust soon enough. Should have switched to cover 2 by their second drive. Offense was predictable and shouldn’t have been throwing out of the end zone. We couldn’t stop their blitz all night. Why did they think we could on our own 2 yard line? Maybe we can get lucky and play in the Bahamas again?

You know what Frank and his assistants DO do?
1. They decide against going for it at 4th and 1 too many times in Frank's history in big games when they have a big, bruising runner who can easily get 1 yard. This always leads to the other team scoring after we punt.
2. They recruit the players the last 14 years who have not helped produce a MAC championship.
3. They do not motivate our guys pre-game to the point that they salivate before the game.
4. They make the play calls like the ones against Cincinnati from the 1-yard line when you run the same play twice in a row.

That's what the coaches DO do and our coaches, unfortunately, have been stagnant. It happens in any job where an employee works every day with the knowledge that they are completely safe in their position. That allows them to simply play it safe. No sense of urgency allows coaches to coach without urgency and say what you will about players needing to motivate themselves but they can see when coaches don't have a fire and a sense of urgency. Heck, I have heard from Burrow more this year on Twitter in regards to his son and LSU than he is about OU. Good for Joe and good for an Athens kid making it big but why isn't dad saying "OU, OH YEAH" about Rourke a little more often?

This loss hurts. Against a team that was allegedly injury depleted. Now Ohio is literally only 3rd in the MAC East facing another loss next week. If Ohio doesn't beat Akron, it will be 6-6 in one of the worst divisions in the FBS, and all with a team that's relatively healthy. That in itself is sort of an indictment on where the program is in year 14.

There are certainly many thoughts that I have concerning this game. Other thoughts from these past 14 years has also entered my mind.
We just seem unable to finish a season per bshot44's post noted.
We can't change yesterday's result! We need to move on!
I would like to believe that the coaches and players are tough minded enough to recover and win these next 2 games. I believe we have the talent. If we can, then I for one, and maybe others on this board, will see that maybe we turned a corner.
Recovering after a loss like this is very telling about a program and all it's participants. At this point I think it's coaching that plays a larger role in moving the team past this disappointment and being ready and prepared to win the next game.
My next thought is not new to this board, but I feel it needs to be addressed.
Frank and the coaches have done a great job of resurrecting a program that was a cellar dweller for decades. However, is that by itself enough? Could it be that this staff feels NO PRESSURE to move the program to the next level? Possible? Perhaps the administration is satisfied with the state of the program?

I DO NOT FEEL THAT THE FAN BASE IS SATISFIED!

Where do we go from here.

Papi is a once in a generation asset that has been under used entirely. A wide receiver-slot? NOT 100% of the time. But no change in offense to max utilize a game changer like him.

A Dri Archer type but not used at all like Archer. How much greater a weapon would Papi be if a linebacker is forced to cover him? Slipping out of the back field after the wideouts clear out an area would have sent shivers to D coordinators everywhere. Instead the defensive coaches on the other side laugh that they get to take the week off from having to watch film because they know EXACTLY what they will face the the next game---the same every MAC team has faced in the Solich era. (only confusion was caused when TT quit running)

The OHIO offense is basically the same as it has been forever with this staff. A one back set that allows for very little creativity. (would have been nice to have a counter play with the Miami defensive ends crashing into the backfield on every play and taking themselves out of run support on all the plays. We should have seen Papi come flying into their vacancy and off to the races)

I don't share the sentiments of being "gone", but Groundhog Day is 100% spot on. Expecting anything more than 8-4 from this program is seemingly unrealistic.
