There has been a lot of talk lately (and every season for a while now) on the subject of the midweek MACtion games which provide Ohio the opportunity to play on National TV, but the stands in both Peden and opponents' stadiums are virtually empty.

Let's see how Conference-USA is doing this Saturday.

If you're UAB, you're loving this season. Your team is 8-1 overall and undefeated in conference play. This Saturday is your home finale against Southern Miss. Sounds like it should be a great crowd, right? Even if it's not, then it should at least be easily accessible.

Well, they can't even get on an ESPN/CBS/Fox webcast for this game. It's on something called beIn Sports, which I've never heard of. An 8-1 team!

I have no idea what C-USA's TV deal is or who they partner with. I have no idea how much they get for it compared to the MAC.

So UAB isn't sacrificing a home Saturday for eyeballs on the TV and potentially TV dollars here. Just thought this was interesting for a team that looks locked in the for the C-USA title game.

BeIn sports covers a lot of soccer in Europe, among other things. It's definitely a channel that requires the addition of a "sports package".

I guess my theory on this midweek game stuff is that there should be a balance so that the conference isn't playing essentially every single game over the final 4-5 weeks on Tues/Wed/Thurs nights. But in the end it's not gonna change until the TV contract runs out, so worrying to much about it probably isn't worth it.

Go Cats: I think Ohio has the best midweek attendance in the MAC. Decent crowds considering all the factors.

MAC has a nice brand with its MACtion. CUSA not getting the exposure the MAC has. Marshall football program fading because they are not on TV like they were in the MAC.

Speaking of UAB, their football team’s had a better year this year than Ohio. They clinched the CUSA East Division last night and I believe are now 9-1. If we played them again in a bowl, I doubt the result would be the same. And the city of Birmingham’s building a new stadium for them to play in. They seem to have a very bright future.

The fade trophy award goes to Southern Miss which once dominated CUSA's Thursday night TV package. I always hated the fact USM could be on TV midweek while Ohio had no TV coverage. Forward the time clock by 15 years and its Ohio on midweek 5 consecutive weeks while USM is not on. The once great recruiting advantage as one of the few non-BCS teams in the south is also of course gone with the rise of Troy and South Alabama not to mention additional schools in GA, FL, NC.

The TV coverage could be structured in a way that is more efficient for the conference. To watch all the games one needs at least a mid tier TV/internet package and the ESPN+ app in addition to that. If ESPN3 was rolled into ESPN+ one could get away with a live TV service (e.g. YouTube TV) and ESPN+ without needing the ISP. For $40 dollars all the games over your cellphone instead of $130 for the TV/internet combo.

ESPN2 (Virginia, Buffalo)
ESPNU (Cincinnati, WMU, Miami)
CBS Sports (Ball St, Akron?)
ESPN3 (UMass, BGSU)
ESPN+ (Howard, Kent St, NIU)
