Troy Mangen, 6th String TE for Atlanta Falcons
https://www.atlantafalcons.com/team/depth-chart

As for Mitchell, the wiki says he is a free agent, so some team could pick him up later this fall.

Mitchell is still one of many unsigned veteran safeties. Have not seen any announcement of a retirement.

Can anyone remember if there were this many Bobcats on NFL rosters at any one time?

How many are on rosters now doesn't matter. The question is, how many will be on rosters when they hit the 53-man roster. Last year there were 4, Mitchell, Carrie, Basham, and Brown, and that included 2 starters. Both may be all-time records.

This year there are 6 for now, but only Carrie, Basham, and Brown appear safe. Poling is on the bubble, as a 3rd team linebacker. Here are two early projections for the final 53 men:
https://finheaven.com/threads/projected-53-man-dolphins-d... /
https://www.thephinsider.com/2018/5/27/17386218/miami-dol...

The first one projects that the Dolphins will keep 7 linebackers, including Poling. The second one projects that they will keep only 6 linebackers, with Poling being one of them, however, he will have to move up to 2d team for that to happen.

Similarly, Sayles is on the bubble. Here are three projected final 53-man rosters for the Steelers:
https://stillcurtain.com/2018/07/03/pittsburgh-steelers-b... /
https://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2018/6/15/17468512/...
https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/2018/05/08/updated-stee... /

All project that the Steelers will keep 6 defensive linemen for their 3 DL spots. In all cases, they project the starters from last year, Heyward, Hargrave, and Tuitt, plus Walton and Alualu. Who will the last guy be? Las year's backup, McCullers? This year's draftee, Frazier? All three project Frazier will be the one kept, but for now, McCullers is ahead on the depth chart.

Sayles has to beat out Walton for a spot on the final 53. Walton is another MAC player, from CMU. In 3 seasons Walton has 20 tackles and 2 sacks. If Sayles can't beat out Walton, he could make the practice squad, which would give him an opportunity for more playing chances. That was what Cohen did, as I recall, and when someone ahead got hurt, he stepped up and took advantage of the opportunity.

As a sixth string TE, it seems unlikely that Mangen would make it to the 53 man roster. He's going to need to move up, and quickly. I would expect only 3 tight ends on the final team, with possibly another on the practice squad.

In the end, it seems possible Ohio may have 4 players on rosters this year, and if so, will tie last year.

I understand what you mean, LC. And as always, I appreciate all the hard work you put into your research.

But I DO think it matters who is in NFL camp now. I can almost guarantee Ohio coaches play that up to recruits. They let those recruits know that Bobcats can get a shot at the NFL -- maybe even show game tape of alums playing in NFL preseason games.

I know that most players who come to Ohio aren't expecting the NFL, the fact that it is a possibility -- even for someone who plays at Ohio -- is a nice thing to aspire to.

You can find a list of Bobcats who have had a professional career in the media guide, at page 102. Unfortunately it is not complete, and there are players missing, such as Jordan Thompson, Phil Bates, Noah Keller and players in the last few years. The 2018 guide is not up yet, so here's a link to the 2017 guide:
https://d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net/z/k/br8ap5cj0lqit6/...

Here are ones that have played in recent years (and note that it includes everyone that signed a contract, even if they never made the final 53 man roster):

Noah Keller 2012 St. Louis Rams
Todd Koenig 2008 Cleveland Browns
Troy Mangen 2018 Atlanta Falcons
Scott Mayle 2007-8 Buffalo Bills, 2008 Kansas City Chiefs
Terrance McCrae 2011 Pittsburgh Steelers
Kalvin McRae 2008 Kansas City Chiefs

Sorting by position
RB: Brinker, McRae, Blankenship
QB: none
WR: Brazill, Foster, Goulet, Mayle, McCrae, Price, Bates
TE: Thompson, Sylvan, Mangen
OL: Herman

DB: Abrams, Byrum, Carrie, Cox, Koenig, Mitchell, Parson, Posey, Turner, Wells, Wright
DL: Basham, Carberry, Cohen, Gatling, Sayles
LB: Brown, Keller, Muncy, Poling

Special Teams: Senser, Zastudil

That is 20 defensive players to 14 offensive players. Ohio produces a lot of defensive backs in particular, and a lot of wide receivers. They have failed to produce a QB, and have produced only 1 offensive lineman for the NFL, which is way low, when you consider that 5 of 22 players are offensive linemen.

Same list they had in a football program a few years ago. I pointed out to them that they left out arguably the best OHIO NFLer of all time -- Vince Costello. Nice to see that they paid attention to what I told them. I guess I get more respect at the Lincoln Presidential Library. ;-)

Edit: They have guys who played before Vince, like Art Lewis, but left Vince out. Maybe playing for the Browns doesn't count as a real NFL experience! ;-)

Based on the ESPN site, Ohio is about typical in the MAC where 5-7 is the norm. WMU has 14, CMU has 16 and Toledo has 20, so you can see where the most talented players are being recruited.

I am so happy that Sayles is getting another shot, he was a great bobcat and played great in the preseason games last year. I am sad that brown lost his starting position. I hope that the current nfl bobcats have a great year.

I thought Sayles played well enough last year that he would get a spot on the Practice squad, but it was not to be. I think he has a much better shot this year. As for Brown, he may yet get that starting spot. We'll just have to see how it turns out.

Basham and Brown appear safe from being cut, but don't look like they will move up to starting. Poling seems to be on the bubble, and will probably make the final 53, but if not, should at least make the practice squad.

As for Mangen, who was listed as the sixth string TE, this site has some favorable comments on him, and says he has a decent shot of making the practice squad:
falcoholic wrote:
Mangen has been the “best of the rest” of the TEs, which isn’t really saying much. He’s looked serviceable and has been called upon to block frequently. With the Falcons keeping only 3 TEs, it seems likely that they’ll keep an extra body on the practice squad.

https://www.thefalcoholic.com/2018/8/21/17763844/falcons-...

As for Sayles, all I can find is this:
steelcurtain wrote:
[Casey] is one of the quieter names that I could see on the practice squad. There are reports that he has done well in camp and he is the type of player the Steelers like. Tony Pauline says he is “a blue-collar type of player.”

Take it for what it's worth, but ESPN has final roster predictions for all NFL teams. Bashem, Brown, Carrie and Poling are expected (according to the site) to make the 53 man squad of their respective teams. Mangen and Sayles are not.

As I recall, now we have to wait 24 hours to find out if they made the Practice team. Good luck to them. I'm thinking that Poling will for sure, and that Sayles has a good shot, and perhaps Mangen as well.

Poling makes Dolphins Practice Squad. Falcons and Steelers have announced their 10 man Practice Squad signings with Mangen and Sayles not included. Perhaps they will get signed to another NFL team's Practice Squad.
