I think this young man is going to be be special. He has Brian Urlacher potential. He has given up two long touchdowns and been a victim of a qb stiff arm, but he has sideline to sideline potential and I think he will improve from week to week and perform at an all MAC level towards the end of the year. I can’t wait to see TJ Robinson and Keye Thompson play, we could have the best linebacker group for years to come. Keye Thompson looks like Ray Lewis on his highlight film and benches like 400 pounds.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

The three LBers who have verbaled also look like keepers.

In two years this linebacker group will be the best in the MAC.

Not possible. We have been told by the learned fans on the board Ohio's coaches can't coach or recruit and the players though athletic will never tackle well. Well, hope does spring eternal.

I disagree with the assessment of our linebackers. I think we were at the top of the MAC with our LB corp in 2016 and 2017. Ron Collins is an outstanding coach and developer of talent. I think the present group will continue to mesh and be near the top of the conference. Crouch is an all conference player.

I agree and if they stay together in 2020 the following 9 LBers will probably be OUr best group ever.

Conner
Dorsa
Robinson
Houston
McCrory
Thompson
Blauser
Johnson

Are you guys basing this prediction on potential or on what you've seen on the field so far this season? I'm not sure I've seen anything in Sept., 2018, that warrants this group being dubbed the best linebacking unit in the MAC in the near future.

Only 2 from my list are playing.

This is the first time I’ve made such a prediction.

Just look at their videos.

Out of all the linebackers trying to transition to new roles, Dylan Conner has the toughest spot as he has to play receivers as the nickle defender. One thing that September 2018 has taught us is it is not easy to be a rookie starter replacing Chad Moore.

Both. What I saw in September was a young defense that just replaced more than 75% of it’s 1st string personnel with first time starters. It’s expected that they will need some time to come together and reach their potential. But even at the end of the season they will still be the youngest D in the conference. Some fans have unrealistic expectations of how quickly and easily these young players should be performing as a unit.

I don't have the time to dig thru each depth chart ... but what proof do you have that Ohio has the youngest defense?

5 seniors listed as starters.

The secondary, which we can all agree is the biggest issue, has two redshirt seniors, a redshirt junior and two sophomores listed as starters?

The two-deep is littered with redshirt juniors and some other seniors.

https://d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net/p/l/981phdu04w55y4/... (Page 10)

While yes ... they might not all have tons of game experience ... they do have plenty of practice and college experience. 19 returning letterman on defense (4 starters returning/7 lost)

I don't think anyone expects this defense to be the 1985 Chicago Bears or the 2016 Ohio defense that carried them to MAC East title .... but I don't think it's too much to expect them to be a helluva lot better than what they've shown?

Again ... six straight games of 30+ points allowed. Worst stretch for an Ohio defense in 30 years. And the three games vs FBS teams this year have come against offenses ranked 31st, 61st & 73rd ... not exactly murders row.

UVa had their best offensive day vs FBS of the season by 60 yards vs Ohio
UMass had their best offensive day vs. FBS by over 100 yards vs. Ohio
UC had 2nd best .... only because UConn is one of the few defenses actually worse than Ohio's

They will get another shot to "grow up" this wknd. This Kent offense isn't as terrible as they've been in years past. They're averaging over 400 yards per game. Ohio is allowing over 500.

Luckily Kent has the only defense worse than Ohio's in the MAC.

Over 71 points certainly looks to be in play Saturday at The Dix.

Beating that drum again. Oh, just one thing, five games ago UAB only go 6. Since there is also offense each team will play, how about devoting just a little time to that. I know it will be harder to be critical, but, I have faith you will pull through.

Sorry maybe young was the wrong choice. Inexperienced is what I mean. No other team lost as many defensive starters. And I think it’s a cheap shot to add losses from last years team on this one. It’s a different team this year. It’s frustrating trying to explain the nuances of football to people who didn’t play. The defense will continue to improve. Hopefully so will your criticisms.

I hope that wasn't a cheap shot insinuating I didn't play football? I might not have played division one college football ... but I've been around the game for 25+ years, so I know a little ... certainly enough to know this defense is not very good right now.

If inexperienced was what you were going for ... I'll give that to you if you're talking about the front seven. That is true ... that group is pretty wet behind the ears. You can see that in the lack of pass rush they've generated.

But if you're talking about the secondary ... I'm going to have to disagree. Even the Ohio Game Notes lists the secondary as a point of strength on this defense:

OHIO GAME NOTES wrote:
STRENGTH IN THE SECONDARY
Ohio returns three-fourths of its defensive backfield in 2018.

Redshirt junior free safety Javon Hagan (Jacksonville, Fla.) was an All-MAC Second Team pick a year ago after ranking second on the team with 85 total tackles (45 solo, 40 assisted). He picked off one pass and forced one fumble. The 2016 MAC Freshman of the Year is on the watch list for the Thorpe Award entering this season.

The Bobcats return redshirt senior Kylan Nelson (Lexington, Ky.) at strong safety. Nelson was sixth on the team with 53 total tackles (28 solo, 25 assisted) and third with eight pass breakups.

Redshirt senior Jalen Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio) is back as the starting right cornerback after tying for second on the team with two interceptions and ranking second with 11 pass breakups a year ago.

Ohio’s secondary lost All-MAC Third Team left cornerback Bradd Ellis, who led the Bobcats with 19 pass breakups and tied for second on the squad with two interceptions. Two sophomores who are natives of Miami, Fla., Jamal Hudson and Marlin Brooks, are vying to take the starting spot this year.

They are one of the worst units in the country. Period.

Go ahead and take away the two losses to Akron and Buffalo from last year .... they have still been TORCHED by the likes of Howard, UMass, UC and UVa. That doesn't change much.

This four-game stretch is still one of the worst in modern day Ohio football history.

That's not an opinion. That's a fact.

And for the record, WMU returned only 4 defensive starters and they are ranked much higher across the board than Ohio

60th in total defense ... Ohio 125th
40th in 3rd down defense ... Ohio 129th
37th in passing yds allowed ... Ohio 128th
111th in pass efficiency def ... Ohio 124th
90th in rush defense ... Ohio 47th
***because there is no need to run when pass defense is this bad

Anyhow. Keep picking apart people's comments to fit your narrative. You excel at that.

Don't see you going after LC for his fact-based posts on how bad this defense is?

Keep fighting the good fight, dude.

Looking forward to Ohio's next inexplicable loss so you'll just disappear off this message board for weeks at a time. That's the only silver-lining when they lose bad games. You go ***poof***

So let's talk about the offense ....

You are so quick to puff out your chest and lead the parade down Court Street after they set records vs. UMass last week.

I acknowledged them ... but I'm also a realist.

This is the same offense that put up 6 points the last 40 minutes vs. UC when all they needed was one TD from the one-inch line to win.

Also the same offense that benched their star QB after three series because they were anemic vs. mighty Howard.

Yes ... anyone can see the offense is light years better than Ohio's defense and will most likely need to continue to be if they have any shot at winning the MAC.

They have barely scratched the surface with how good they can be this year.

I'm not sure where the ceiling is for this defense, though.

Returning Defensive Starters and yards/game given:
4: Ohio (518)
5: Kent (528) , WMU (365)
6: Toledo (458)
7: EMU (417), NIU (350), CMU (336)
8: Miami (384), BG (501)
9: Ball St (413), Buffalo (355), Akron (337)

Obviously there is a correlation, but not 100%. WMU's defense has been excellent despite not having many returning starters. BG's defense has been awful despite having a lot.

I still believe that, in order to compete for a MACC, Ohio needs to give up no more than an average of 360 yards/game. That's a far cry from the 518 they have given up so far. Kent's offense is averaging 407 yards/game, so holding them under 400 yards would be a good sign that the defense is improving.

I’m not going to disparage any players, but, just because the “game notes” say it, doesn’t make it so.
And I’ve been around banks for 25+ years, but I don’t know shit about banking.

As far as the age, the starters are:
Seniors: Payne, Arp, Croutch, Nelson, Fox
Junior: Hagen
Soph: Evans, Connor, Dorsa, Hudson
Fresh: Ogun-Semore

Ohio's best defense under Solich was in 2006. It looked like:
Seniors: Yates, Muncy, Russ, Wright
Juniors: Graham, Koenig
Soph: Hartke, Cohen, Parson, Mitchell
Fresh: Hodge

That defense was actually slightly younger, but it had an awful lot of players who later got a chance at the NFL, including Muncy (FA contract with Tennessee, if I remember), Wright (FA contract with Cincinnati, was poised to make the team when he had a career ending injury), Cohen (Detroit, Seattle), Parson (FA with Texans, if I recall), and Mitchell (Oakland, Pitt). How many does this defense have? Time will tell.

Trying to score on that 2006 defense in practice was damn near impossible. The linebackers could play slants and dart to the flats. They could carry longer routes and pass me off to the safeties too. And you had TJ, Mike and Mark who had the confidence to jump routes. I would like to see us ‘jump” more routes and take chances on pick 6’s. Let the safeties play higher for tips and over throws. I would also like for us to mix in 3-4 or 3-5-5. Doesn’t have to be every down....but ever so often just to confuse opposing o-lineman. I was at the game against UMass and the team is filled with tremendous athletes. They are maturing at a different rate than most schools because of a 2nd week Bye. Week 3 is like Week 1 again. You definitely want a mid or late season Bye week. As we get into conference play I think we will start to assert ourselves. Someone earlier stated 400 yards given up by our defense will be a sign of improvement. I think we can hold them to 200 yards passing and about 100 yards rushing. So I’m challenging us to 300 yards and 2 interceptions by DBs ; )

I think that's a good goal. I would love to see that. I still think this can be a very good team, but for that to happen, the defense needs to gel in a hurry.

Much of this sounds right to me. Ohio generally needs to play better defensively . I think the second 2 games more accurately reflect Ohio's performance potential defensively vs the first 2 games and I would expect continued improvement on defense. While the defense's performance against Howard is fact, I think it is an outlier: Ohio had 8-9 new starters that day due to graduation and camp injuries and gave up 100 yard on the first two plays. My first hope for Ohio always is they play to their potential and compete for a MAC championship. We need the defense to progress to a point we can win the East: on any given day this offense and special teams can help win a championship

Agreed. Defense Wins Championships. Until Ohio shows a pulse on defense all this commotion about championships might as well be put on hold.

I have a feeling that Conner and the linebackers are going to show up today.
