While there are several things about the game at UC that I find bothersome (the final minute of the game primarily), I do have to give them credit for keeping the atmosphere charged and exciting. Was the blaring music loud at times??? Absolutely! The stadium management did all they could to keep the home crowd energized and supportive of the team even when things were looking bleak for the hosts.
I know we don't have the scoreboard or audio system they have at UC but if we could simply incorporate many of things they did with the system we do have it'd be a great improvement over what we've been doing recently. It was refreshing to see updated team stats, scores of other games, and video replays on a regular basis. Timeouts weren't used to do advertising for a local business supporter or to see how quick we can fill a taco or roll across the field in a sleeping bag. Rather the music and video board were used to enhance the game experience and keep the crowd into the game and not have them rushing to the concessions or restrooms.
Let's start to think outside of the box a little bit...let's try something different.

Good: The stadium itself. not outsized but good size. Great place to watch a game and the angle of the stands and closed in feel means lots of good seats.

Good: Tailgating. Thanks to Bobcat Pete for letting us join his friends tailgate very well organized tailgate. Beyond them, the pregame atmosphere was great. Wish we would have been there sooner.

Bad: ingress and egress. Possibly the worst arrangement for entering and leaving a stadium I've ever seen. it was one long traffic jam with no visual indication of where you SHOULD go.

Bad: house music. obnoxious and way too loud, but I did notice it was done deliberately whenever our band was playing to ensure no one could hear our fans. I guess that's good for the home team, but kinda douche-y.

"Ohio Univ." on the scoreboard? Screw them. If they do come to Athens in two years, I would like to ensure that they get a Univ. Cincy on our scoreboard. even ohio state gets this part right. Weird made-up logos on pre-game literature, No respect from them or their athletic department. Again, screw them.

Good: Pre-game tailgate. My friends and I accepted an open invitation to tailgate with Republic of Cincinnati and we were welcomed and engaged with open arms. They said 10+ years ago, people weren't tailgating on the main green on campus, but that was the spot to be. No problems from UC fans - there was definitely an aura of "these guys are our neighbors"

Good: Bobcat fan turnout. Best I've seen at any away game I've been to, even @OSU in 2008.

Good: The scoreboard and rap music. I understand if you don't like it, but I got the impression that UC fans are NFL fans too. I don't know quite how to describe it, but I don't get the impression that the Ohio fans you see in Peden are the NFL type. I think UC plays to this. Say what you will, but it generated a loud reaction from the crowd on important defensive plays and I think they balanced it well with their own band. Miami tries to do this too, but as with most aspects of Miami athletics, they screw it up.

Bad: The former Ohio football player who shall remain nameless in my section who was a complete asshole the whole game. Cursing at Rufus and knocking over the cheerleaders' water jug after the late interception. Then he tries to be friendly and high five the little kids sitting right next to him.

AWFUL: The first 10 rows of Nippert Stadium are useless. The gradual incline and low starting point makes only about 10% of the field visible. Considered moving back, but eventually got used to watching the game on the scoreboard.

Why anyone would want tickets so low at any football game is beyond me. UC is a great venue and they have dumped tens of millions into it.

Yeah, that sprayed water all over the back of my pants, as I was standing right in front of him on the field. I was none too happy and he just shrugged at me. Jerk.

I don't think it was a case of any of us necessarily "wanting" these seats. These were the seats provided to us when ordering them through OU ticketing.

THIS and then some!

Is the media/all athletic management that concerned/worried that someone is going to be misled that OHIO STATE is going to be the opponent for something?

This will make you frustrated:

https://gobearcats.com/schedule.aspx?path=football

Oh I guess the big Bobcat head next to the name suggests Buckeyes? Tulane/Temple on and on don't have to have university added on.

So much of the media coverage for the game leading up, during and after was overkill with "Ohio University," "Ohio U." etc. here in the area. But not just Ohio.

I am going to guess at one time "Ohio U." was used very commonly colloquially and it's a bad habit that dies hard? It seems like every other school can just be called by their darn single name-why not us? Is there really that many people who will think it's Ohio State? And if there is, tough. You will find out it's not if you read the story/article etc.

I did find this interesting. Tom Groeschen, the Enquirer's beat writer, did a live update article for the game and called us everything but "Ohio."

https://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/college/universit... /

He did more of a postgame "Things we learned" story and then used just "Ohio" frequently. But still a lot of OU and Ohio U.s. It's not as annoying if they do it for both schools.

https://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/college/universit... /

I am tempted to email him an electronic version of our media guide, and cite page 2:

OHIO, PLEASE
When referring to the Bobcats, please use Ohio. Ohio
University is acceptable when using other institutions’ full
names. Please do not use Ohio U. or OU. Thank you

Agree with you on the atmosphere in terms of scoreboard and music usage.

As a fan of UC on days other than this past Saturday, they do an infinitely better job of Gameday Atmosphere than has ever occurred at an Ohio Football game anytime in my 23 years of being a Bobcat. They get people into the game, and their use of the scoreboard and audio is top notch. Same thing occurs at the Shoemaker Center for hoops.

I've said it before related to Ohio hoops, but people may not like the music that is played, but that is what the majority of the demographic (current students and young alumni) that gets into the game and makes the most noise wants to hear: Modern music from the last 15 years - loud music, and rap music. Not classic rock from the 50's and 60's, and not marching band music. There's an obvious culture difference between the two campuses, but there's no doubt in my mind that some of the in game additions used in UC (or other places I've been to) would play well for more than half of the folks in the stands at OU. Might even convince more students to come to games if it were changed to that "style" of in game music and video board management. I.e. -- make it more fun. I know some older fans on here will have opinions on that, but I honestly believe there's something to it.

Last thought - while I know what the media guide says about the usage of "OU", or "Ohio U", I really don't understand why the usage of "OU" by non-Bobcats gets people all riled up. I still refer to it as OU rather often. Now, "Ohio U" sounds odd - as in you don't say most schools like that - for example, you don't say "Indiana U"....just IU.

Looks like they save those crappy seats for the visitors. Bobcat fans had them the length of the field. The higher seats all had seat backs cause they are used.

Thought the music and volume was perfect. Its a football game, its supposed to be exciting and thought they did a great job of timing the music for big downs/plays. Their crowd seemed to react to it. Our crowds just turn to the person next to them and ask why the music is so loud.

It was different to see a student section engaged and staying to the end!

Yes, even with the rain the majority of their student section hung around and vocally contributed to the UC comeback. Lots of lessons to be learned. I don't recall the PA announcer ever having to remind them to "get loud" on a big 3rd or 4th down play. The loud music and the crowd yelling between downs helped keep the atmosphere energized throughout the contest.

Looks like the "game day atmosphere" was just fine and dandy if u a Bearcat.....

From my iPhone while in the plains of S.D. while on a trip game day, the "atmosphere" from the updates on my phone were like the day before, when I was at the Battle of Little Bighorn site.... (AKA as the "Battle of the Greasy Grass" by the Lakota).

Our "Custer" got "Souix-ed"....Crazy Horse prepared himself and waited until well into the battle to make his decisive "charge" from out of the "home/village" site - And we (and Custer) had no decisive plan to react to the what should have been clearly "expected".....

O & D Co-ords, and HC....Massive Fails. As was Custer (HC), Reno (O), and Benteen (D) fails at Little Bighorn....

But, they won the Souix War.....so.....Can we react and Build Up, respond and bounce back, and win the MAC War from hard lessons learned at this battle?

Serious question:

Given that about half of our home games most years will take place on weeknights, to smallish crowds, does that play into the effort the athletic department thinks is needed for a game day experience?

Not that I would agree with such a stance but it does take a good amount of effort to present a special event like a home football game and the way MAC home slates have been going it's almost like preparing for two different events.

I have never been able to go to a weeknight MACtion game: for those who are more regulars to you notice a lot of major differences once you enter Peden in terms of services, quality etc.? Here is my obligatory acknowledgement that it has probably mentioned on here in other places.

I have never noticed a difference for weeknight games other than the crowds being smaller.
