That's what my Uncle Otto from the old country used to say.

He was quite the philosopher. Kind of like Mickey Rourke's character from the movie "Barfly." Except Otto never got lucky with Faye Dunaway.

But what happens if that part of Virginia gets 7 inches of rain like I just saw predicted on "the most trusted name in news." Virginia just played a game at Indiana and barely lost in a monsoon. Would that be an advantage, having just played one in those conditions? Or do you think the game would be called off?

CHARLOTTESVILLE � Dillon Reinkensmeyer knows just how big an impact heavy rain can have on a game.

As Virginia�s starting center, he experienced it all on every snap of Saturday�s road loss at Indiana, from the slick football, to its added water-logged weight, to the bad footing on the slick turf.

�My shoes were completely soaked through,� Reinkensmeyer, a sophomore, said Monday. �Every time I stepped, water seeped out. So you just have to deal with it.�

The Cavaliers (1-1) will likely have to deal with it again this weekend when they host Ohio (1-0) on Saturday. With at least remnants of Hurricane Florence expected to bring heavy rain on game day, Virginia is bracing for a second straight wet affair.

UVa. coach Bronco Mendenhall said, in anticipation of the rain, his offense will spend most of the week practicing outdoors, to get more accustomed to the conditions. In Mendenhall�s football policy manual � a how-to instructional guide compiled over his career and a tome that makes the Iliad look like Cliffs Notes � there is plan for any possible scenario Saturday � from a delay to a postponement to a cancellation.

The ACC determines whether a game will be played base on the safety of both participants and fans.

Mendenhall likes to have thought out every detail. For example, if there�s a delay, when will the players take their pads off? When a new kickoff time is set, when will they put them back on?

He hopes having already dealt with the rain at Indiana will have his team ready Saturday.

�That should help prepare us well,� he said. �We�ll just be outside in the elements again.�

Mendenhall was critical of his defense � particularly the defensive line � in Saturday�s loss, noting that the unit wasn�t �gap sound.� Mendenhall said when defensive linemen gave up their assigned gaps, the linebackers and safeties playing off of them also ended up out of position, helping Indiana rush for 237 yards, averaging 5.4 yards per carry.

�I feel like I didn�t do a great job of keeping the gap integrity for the whole game,� sophomore defensive end Mandy Alonso said. �It really messed with the linebackers, and when the linebackers are offset, it messes with the DBs and it's just like a cycle.�

Senior linebacker Chris Peace said the weather helps expose when players aren�t fundamentally sound.

�If anything, it just shows more flaws,� Peace said. �Like if you're not playing technically sound, such as like keeping your base, messy feet, you�ll trip over more.�

That will be key again Saturday. Ohio has a veteran offensive line and a pair of mobile quarterbacks. The Bobcats were picked as the preseason favorite in the MAC.

Ohio figures to be well rested. After opening with a 38-32 win on Sept. 3 over Howard � an FCS team coached by former U.Va. coach Mike London � the Bobcats had an open date last week.

�We gave our players a fair amount of time off, and for good reason,� Ohio coach Frank Solich said Monday. �We were banged up a little bit coming out of fall camp, which is certainly not a goal you have, but it�s what it was.�

Sure. If rain was the only factor in whether or not to play the game. That may be the simple after-effect of what a hurricane brings to an area -- high winds, flooding, power outages, disruptions in travel, gas/water shortages, calls to stay indoors.

I agree, more than just rain to be concerned with. More than likely there will be flooding, the wind forecast is for 30+ MPH sustained, with higher gusts. Tornado threat could be high as well.

From reading some of the weather predictions, I agree. I hope it doesn�t get played, just to ensure that everyone�s safe. Rain by itself is one thing; constant torrential downpours with heavy winds and lightning is quite another. To all of the BAers in SC, NC and Virginia, be safe!

I�m 120 miles from the coast in Columbia and schools have already been closed starting tomorrow for the rest of the week. Hugo wiped out Charlotte back in 89, my sister lost power for 2 weeks in Charlotte. Rain is the least of the worries, tornados and high winds taking out the pine trees.

Never an easy call to make, there was a Florida State game that was cancelled a few years ago, because of fears of people travelling from areas where the hurricane was to hit, even though Tallahassee wasn't in the path of the storm. Angry fans said it wasn't necessary. However in many of these hurricanes, flooding rains kill more people than actual wind damage. You might recall a few years ago when one of the Carolina schools played its game in the rain when the remnants of a hurricane were approaching. Sadly, a couple of fans died on the way home from the game when a road washed away. Even if the game is played in Charlottesville, a lot of rain could fall afterwards leaving some of the Bobcat faithful stranded. It is never an easy call to make, hopefully safety and common sense will prevail.

The timing of the storm hitting is a concern with the game.

On Sunday they were saying the storm would hit during the day Thursday.

I just heard that now they are predicting the storm will hit Thursday night/Friday,early morning.

They are also saying the storm could "stall".

All in all it seems the best approach would be to cancel the game.

I will be intrigued to see whether we roll out of Athens for this one. Kind of am surprised UVA ain't pushing us to fly out Thursday or something like that and allow us to use their facilities prior to game. This hurricane is going to provide for a lot of screwball results this weekend.

I work with our local Office of Emergency Management.

We get the Forecast Models from the National Weather Service Hurricane Center in Miami.

The last one we got indicates that the storm may slow,before landfall.
That would push back its arrival.

One positive,if it does slow,it could weaken before it comes ashore.

There hasn't been any change in the predictions concerning its path,or that it will "stall" and dump significant amounts of rain on the Carolina's and Va..

The Cavaliers� last game in Nashville came when quarterback Marques Hagans led them to a Music City Bowl victory over Minnesota, 34-31, in 2005. Hagans is now the team�s wide receivers coach.

Ohio already had its open date, not playing last weekend after starting the season with a win over Howard. Virginia�s open date is Oct. 6.

Vanderbilt plays at Notre Dame this weekend. Ticket pricing has not yet been set, according to a Vanderbilt ticket office representative.

Clear bag policy is in force. Ladies (if any lurk this forum)... look up the SEC policy on bag size...there was a fiasco a few week ago when Beyonce played that stadium and SEC bag rules were being enforced.

If any of you are going to stay for the Titans/Texans game Sunday, look up the NFL rules on what is allowed and not allowed. You would hate to miss half an NFL game taking an Uber/Lyft back to the hotel because you tried to bring something in that is not allowed.

Had a meeting with one of my clients this morning on a project we're doing for them.

They are a food distribution company that I found out works with FEMA.

They are currently setting up to truck supplies to where ever the storm hits.

The owner told that when FEMA calls them,they truck 24/7 to the disaster zone to feed residents,workers etc.

Just saw an updated model for the storm.

Seems to be tracking further South.

Looks like its headed for the North Carolina/South Carolina Border.
