You can't get all the tight ends in since often two a year play. I tried to get the best ones in. Some others not in the poll that you can write in:
Thomas Christy
Dave Carter
Jahan Olyaie
Nate Caldwell

Didn't we have a TE that was leading the nation in touchdowns at one point? Was that Mooney? I want to say it was Mooney.

This is a tough one. I think that Thompson had a better career, but Mooney was better over a shorter period. Mooney always seemed like a go to guy at any time. Thompson always made the big first down catch (A big catch on that drive in the Penn State if I am correct).

I think if you put either of these guys on the current team, you would see a drastic improvement.

TE always involves a combination of two very different skills, both of which are very important. One is blocking, and the other is receiving, and within the category of receiving you can divide it between the ability to be a deep threat, and the ability to make the tough catch in traffic while being hit.

Mooney was the best deep threat among the Ohio tight ends. Clark may have been the best blocker. Players like Thompson, Mangen, and Heitzman were good at the tough catches. All were good tight ends. Which you prefer depends may depend on the role you see as most important for the tight end. There is no "right" or "wrong" answer.

Hill was a heck of a WR playing TE..he never backed down being undersized either

I took the reported sizes of all the TE in recent years, and then divided weight by height to get a measure of "density". From the heaviest to lightest:

I would say that Thompson, Mangen, and Heitzman were kind of the prototypical Ohio TEs. Logan, Hill, Morgan, and Mooney were on the light end, while Slyvan, Clark, and Carter were on the heavy end.
