Some up, others down. 16 & 60 down noteably. 95 up noteably. Freshmen showing some good gains from recruiting reported weights. What else are you seeing?

O'Shaan Allison is much shorter than initially reported. Even in his highlight video he looked more like 5-10 and not 5-7.

I was reminded that we have a home game in less than a month so we focus our attention on Ohio Bobcats football and not the scandal at Ohio A&M. To say I am beyond ready for actual football to start would be an understatement.

I had the exact same thought. That's gotta be an error.

It isn't uncommon to measure incoming players, and find that their height is not quite what was reported. There seem to be more this year than usual:
Lost 3 Inches:
Allison 5'10" to 5'7"
Justin Birchette from 5'11" to 5'8"
Bryce Houston 6'1" to 5'10"
Jerome Buckner from 5'10" to 5'7"

Lost 2 Inches:
Zach Burks from 6'3" to 6'1"
Jake McCrory from 6'2" to 6'0"
Joe Mischler from 6'0" to 5'10"
Jamison Collier from 6'2" to 6'0"
Noah Hoffman from 6'3" to 6'1"
Shane Hooks from 6'5" to 6'3"
Dante Ruozzo from 6'4" to 6'2"

Lost 1 Inch
Cole Baker from 6'3" to 6'2"
Patrick Gilliland from 6'6" to 6'5"
Bryce Ramer from 6'5" to 6'4"
Alec Burton from 6'5" to 6'4"
Darfnell Gouin from 6'2" to 6'1"
Mason Bernhardt from 6'5" to 6'4"
Kurt Danneker from 6'4" to 6'3"
Tyler Walton from 5'9" to 5'8"
Juan Watkins from 6'5" to 6'4"
Antrez Baker from 6'4" to 6'3"
Bryce Stai from 6'3" to 6'2"

The list of incoming players who were measured at the reported size was much shorter, and mostly walkons, and the list of players who measured taller than their reported size was even shorter (none).

On the other hand, sometimes they grow. Jalen Fox came in at 5'10", and is now 6'0" after being 5'11" last year. Similarly, Jake Hale started at 6'0" and has grown to 6'2". Hagen, Nelson, Ouellette and Irons all gained an inch on this roster.

Another good thing about the roster is that all players who were expected to report are on the roster.

L.C., of course, many men at that age do grow taller while in college so that part is not surprising. However, the consistent trend of new recruits being shorter on the roster than the reported height when they were recruited is curious. This reminds me of a statement made directly to me by a former OHIO SID. He said that Larry Hunter consistently had him report the heights of his players a few inches shorter than their actual heights. This was particularly true, he said, for forwards and centers, not so much for guards, where he would occasionally do the opposite. This SID was very frustrated by having to misreport these numbers, but he had to do it, as Larry made it clear that he was giving an order, and not a suggestion. Solich doesn't appear to me to be a coach that would play this type of game. But, maybe he would. What do you think?

Having tracked height and weight data for years, I don't think Ohio is misreporting. When a player goes to combine, for example, they are reported at the same size they were on the Ohio roster. I think that on the whole the Ohio data is fairly accurate. That isn't to say that there aren't a few typos, occasionally.

There are three things I see regularly:
1. Most players are done growing by this age, but a few will put on another inch or two.
2. There is some variation due to human measurement. Sometimes you have players that are, say 6'.5", and sometimes they get measured at 6', sometimes at 6'1". They may go back and forth from one roster to the next. Actually, that variation is one thing that tells me the data isn't being made up, and is the result of actual measurement. If the data was being made up, it would be constant.
3. Freshmen often come in and are considerably shorter than their recruiting profile claimed.

What is the reason for #3? High school coaches may put wrong info out, and it gets picked up by the recruiting services. If a player goes to a recruiting camp where he gets measured, and tested, that data may be corrected, or it may not - one thing about the web is that if erroneous information gets out there, it just keeps reproducing, and sometimes you can never eliminate it.

I would presume that the Ohio coaches actually measured the kids, either during their official visit, or when the kids came to an Ohio camp, so hopefully Ohio got what they were expecting.
