Arkley reports:

Elijah Ball carted off with a non-contact leg injury. “Doesn’t look good” — Frank Solich. Injury came in first 7-on-7 of the day, less than an hour into practice. Ball lost the '17 season with a knee injury. Bummer of a way to open 2018 camp.

Anyone heard an update? And if the worst comes true and he's lost for the year, what does that do to our WR depth?

Sounds like he’s through based on his tweets. Saying farewell to football sounds pretty final.

When they said it was a non-contact injury, it sounded like he might have re-torn the ACL. If so, giving up football is probably for the best. It's a shame, as I was very much looking forward to having him on the field this fall.

Keep this thread on mind the next time someone badmouths / gets all upset a t player and how they performed (thankfully is very rare on this site). These kids give it their all and never know when it can go sideways. Get well Elijah.

+1
These guys love football more than we do. I hate to see it end this way for any of them.

I hope this doesn't start the trend again, otherwise I'm encouraging the 110 to learn the M*A*S*H Theme Song

So... what's our outlook now at wide receiver?

Coach Solich spoke in very glowing terms about Elijah at the Cincy caravan.

Elijah wrote us a thank you note a couple years ago for being OBC members. I was looking forward to rooting for him on the field last year and this year but I'll always root for him off the field in the future.

Not too concerned at this point.

Odom and White and Meyer make a nice first team.

Look for one or more of the young guys to step up and I’m talking about redshirt freshmen and maybe even a true freshman.

Have read nice things about Cherry, Minter, Knock and Cox. Dixon is such a good position coach with lots of athletes in his group. I have confidence. Mr. Hagen spoke to the discipline and consistency of the WRs as a team strength.

I feel terrible for Ball; by all accounts, he was a kid who did things the right way. shame he didnt get to realize his football dream more fully but he represented himself and the Bobcats well.

I heard Solich talk before Ball's injury and he said he thought for the first time in his time at Ohio the 'Cats "are at least 6-7 deep at WR." We'll see. I'd love to see what Papi can do over a full season-if he can stay injury-free. And Andrew Meyer has some of THE best hands in the conference: catches he made last year in a number of games were crazy good, especially vs Kansas. If I had a tough, in-traffic completion to be made on this team with what i've seen so far, i'd look Meyers direction. The thing there may be getting open in man/press coverage? We struggled against solid man/press coverage last year, particularly without PAPI.

Papi White told me this is the year! Love his confidence he really appreciates Ohio Fans as he took it upon himself to reach out to a few of us privately on social media.

To be fair.
These kids are also playing the game to get a paid for education, their own enjoyment, and,in many cases, with the hope of playing at the next level.

I really feel bad for Elijah. I don't know the young man, but from what I've heard, if he conducts himself and approaches life post-football they way he has to this point, he'll be fine.

I do have a nagging concern that I want to put out for comment. This injury is to the same knee that sidelined him last year; and it occurred on the first day of camp. It appears to me that this could either be a case of terrible luck, or a lapse on the staff's part (or some of both). Shouldn't the medical staff be assessing him thoroughly throughout his rehab and not clearing him to participate until the risk of re-injury is low? Perhaps they did and it's just a case of terrible luck, but this situation has me scratching my head.

This is much more than a concern about the team's success - it's about the young man's mobility later in life (much more important, in my opinion).

Don't know any of the specifics of this case, but it's certainly possible that the injured area of that knee was thoroughly healed, and it was some other part of this complex joint that was injured this time. If so, that would indicate a congenital problem with that joint in that it had more than one "weak spot." Or, as you say, very bad luck.
