I am wondering if the season ticket renewals have not been so hot for next season. I have been debating renewing mine now that we just went up to a household of 5 this past year and the craziness of taking three young kids to a game. But I got an email today that's "from" Jim Schaus and it called out the known disappointment of only three Saturday home games and how they plan a ticket price increase next year. But if you renew this year you will be grandfathered into your season ticket price for the next year.

Well, they can't be that bad. I am still waiting, two weeks later, for a callback re my tickets.

Considering the expectations for this season, if ticket sales are not hot, that will call into question a couple theories. First, some believe that scoring a lot of points attracts fans. Last season involved record setting numbers of points, and the expectation is for as many or more. Second, some believe that winning attracts fans. It appears that Ohio will be a huge favorite to win the MAC this year, so prospects for that are good.

So...if ticket sales are not good, those that say "mid-week games are very bad for ticket sales" appear to be the ones who are vindicated.

Got the same email:

Thank you for your support of Ohio Bobcats football by being a season ticket holder. The past decade has been the most successful in school history with eight bowl games in the past nine years and a 2017 Bahamas Bowl Championship! With OHIO returning most of the MAC’s #1 rated offense, the Bobcats will certainly be entertaining and they are the pre-season media pick to win the conference! There is nothing better than Gameday in Athens with friends and family and we promise to make your experience at Peden Stadium even better with expanded hospitality and concessions!

We need you back as a season ticket holder! When season ticket sales and revenues are strong, it provides more resources for our football program and overall athletic department. We have recently used football season ticket revenues for: Walter Fieldhouse, football locker room renovations, Sook Academic Center, the new Peden strength and conditioning center renovation plus the new scoreboard and speakers at Peden Stadium. By renewing your tickets this year, you help provide the resources for OHIO athletics to be successful now and in the future.

We were all surprised and frustrated when our schedule came out with only three home Saturdays. While we do not control the conference portion of our schedule, we do feel confident that this is a rare occurrence and don’t expect it to happen again in the future. We apologize for the missing Saturday home game and want to do what we can to incentivize you even more to renew this year!

First, by renewing in 2018, we guarantee that your season ticket price will not increase in 2019. That means significant savings as you will avoid next year’s planned increase. You will also receive a BOBCAT BONUS PACK that includes an exclusive Frank Solich bobblehead, four (4) complimentary tickets to your choice of either one 2018 OHIO football game or one 2018-19 OHIO men’s basketball game and a season ticket pass to OHIO volleyball! Great added value to go along with your season tickets!

We ask that you join us as a Bobcats Football season ticket holder again in 2018 for what is sure to be one of our best seasons ever!

Go Bobcats!

The apparent drop is not surprising on many counts:
Fewer Saturday home games and way too many weeknight games
No P-5 home game-even if last years P-5 was Kansas, no Marshall
Consequences of tax legislation
Fan burnout from continued losses to underdog teams
More TV games- both Ohio and others
Aging population of fans like me who are cutting back travel
Last minute scheduling of start times-making travel arrangements difficult

Not all of these affect my probabilities of buying tickets and attending, but some do.

Three Saturday games. Two against FBS opponents. My current package is $390 a seat. I can only make one of two home games against FBS teams, and as a Clevelander, mid-week games are out of the question. So I'm looking at an average cost of $195 per seat to watch Howard and Bowling Green. My affection for the program and university runs deep, but it has its limits.

I'm either going single game seats or a serious downgrade in season tickets. I understand why the schedule is the way it is and I'm not angry at the school, I've simply reached my breaking point.

As one of 12 member institutions, they have some say in this schedule. I have to believe fans of every single team aren't pleased with there respective schedules. It's time to do something about it as a conference.

$390 a seat is a lot of money for an OU season ticket. I pay $1,300 per ticket for 2nd row "dog pound" tickets (8 regular season and 2 pre-season home games) in Cleveland. How many home games do you get for that $390? Yes, I know the Browns are terrible, but the other teams that come in aren't. My son (OU grad 2018) uses the Browns tickets with fellow OU allums. They enjoy going. Sadly, I think my son only went to 10 games in four years at OU and half of those he only went to pacify me. I'd like to buy OU season tickets with him. Even though the weekday games are problematic, I'd like to see them make the fan experience worthwhile. I'm old so I'd go just to go, but why would the recent graduate millennials go? I don't think OU officials have figured that out. But in any event, I'm rooting for OU!

This makes my wife's head practically explode. It's not just OHIO. She's really upset that we don't know the starting time of either the UVA or UC games. We are attending both, but are having trouble figuring out our hotel situation because we don't know if these will be day or night games. For Charlottesville, we've had to reserve rooms for both Friday and Saturday night so as to cover all the bases. My wife keeps saying, "They don't care anything about the fans, just their money." She wants to boycott college athletics completely. So far, I've used my charm and persuasive skills to keep her on the college athletic train, but it gets harder and harder every year.

It becomes even tougher when you’re flying to get to games. It’s always a problem figuring when to get there.

I'd pay $390 a seat to not be forced to go to Browns games.

There are reasons given for them being down, but do we know that to be the case? This started with a post about the possibility of them being lower, but there's been no reported proof of the numbers suffering, right?

I had heard that season ticket sales were down significantly last year, after 5 straight years of growth. That Schaus email reeked of desperation.

Decided to "downgrade" my package this year for a variety of reasons. Just going to sit in the Phillips Club area on the student side and pay peanuts with a Family Pack.

Here's a silly question from somebody who drives from Cleveland to 1 home game a year, usually near the end of the season.

If you have season tickets and got rid of them, could you still get good seats to any home game you wanted just by buying them the week of the game? How big is demand on homecoming, parents weekend, etc.? Is there a secondary market for Ohio football tickets?

Because if you can get into any game you wanted, and the schedule prevents you from attending all 6 home games, why wouldn't you stop your season ticket purchase? (other than your loyalty to the school, add-on benefits to being a season ticket holder). You could save money in the long term, yet still get into the game of your choice. Are the extra things that come with being a season ticket holder worth it, even if you can't make a few games?

Best kept secret - buy a seat anywhere in Peden and you can sit wherever the heck you want on the student side. It's all GA and you can pretty much guarantee a 50 yard line seat if you're there 30 minutes before kickoff.

So, short of the Tower Club, there's really no reason to have season tickets (expect to save money - if you're coming to multiple games).

Being a season ticket holder is worth it, and I can't make every game. I like my seats, I like the value, I like being able to park in the grass lot (OBC contribution guarantees that, still a tremendous value). I used to be in the Champions club, but have been a premium family pack guy for the last few years (have three kids who are old enough to come to game with me now) and hope to be upgrading back to CC or better in the next few years.

That is only the last couple of seasons where they've restructured the entire student section as GA. It makes it more flexible when bringing in groups like band day so they aren't forced into one section. Also allows for the sale of promotional GA tickets which I will get to in another post.

That sounds right to me. Attendance box scores were lower last year. I talked with ticketing and they said they were below pace on renewals. They made a few changes this year. One was removal of the group sale discount as Mcbin and others discussed. Second is the because of tax deduction changes it has eliminated the ability to do promotional pricing within section 104-105 because they are sold at a premium relative to a regular ticket in the stadium. Only season ticket holders in 104-105 are permitted to buy extra tickets and those sections won't be sold on game days. The idea is that it will open up premium sections for more buyers. Instead of 14-20 discounted tickets in the cheap seats they buy 2-4 in the premium sections and pick up extra as the need them. If you have more premium buyers you have more donors to the OBC.

So pretty much our 50 yard line sections will be empty this season? That will look...interesting. No one will be buying in there. The chairback seats are terrible.

Student side takeover! No one will be yelling "down in front"! Although, as lame as our students can sometimes be, they might :)

Depends what you consider "good" seats. At one time I was able to buy tickets in the Tower without having season tickets there. They eliminated that and they had a new section available, premium family tickets. The first year if I remember correctly they were $180. Homecoming tickets were $40 dollars for the service charge so I could pay $160 for 4 ticket for one game or by one family premium pack for the same cost. With the pack I could guarantee my seats for any home game and pick the ones that I wanted. I liked sitting higher up so it fit perfectly. With the games I didn't make I put on the resale market and made $235 on resale of 2 home Saturday games and 1 midweek game unloading at a discount. But I started hearing a lot of complaints from guests that the seats were too high. Seats were hurting their backs. Given the resale market it encouraged me to consider an upgrade. Tickets will move at face value because Ohiobobcats.com has service charges.

The Bobcats have played five home games in September/October twice in last ten seasons. In 2013 Ohio had seven home games and played 3 Saturday September games with two Saturday October games. In 2010 they played 3 October Saturday games and 2 September Saturday games. With ESPN calling the shots, it could very well be a long time before fans see Ohio play five home Saturday games in October/September again. As of now the 2019 schedule has the home opener Saturday August 31 and another home Saturday September 21. That leaves five Saturday dates before November. If the bye is late in the season, then possibly the Bobcats can get five home Saturday dates before November and actually play nine games before November begins. The best chance could be if Ohio doesn't actually have two weeks off between games like they do this season between the opener and Virginia. If the MAC would schedule them to play on Saturday the 26th of October and then not play again until November 6th or 7th, maybe fans could see five home Saturday games before Halloween.
