How would you rate Jim Schaus's tenure at OHIO? This isn't exclusively a football/basketball question.

In football, he hasn't had to participate in a head coaching hire yet. So really, the most obvious piece is the scheduling, which has not brought a lot of talent into Peden over his time.

In basketball, two months into his OHIO tenure, he had to replace the head coach. By getting John Groce, he made a splash that certainly paid off. Since then, he's had to rehire twice, with mixed results at best with Christian and Phillips.

So, how has he done? He seemed like a home run when he was hired and many assumed he was just going to be here for the blink of an eye while looking to move up the ranks. That talk seems to have silenced over the last couple of years.

I can tell you from firsthand conversations that a couple of coaches at competing schools think Schaus is the best AD in the league.

Probably opened up Pandora's box here for the old G&W Club members.

He's hired well. Ohio has won a variety of MAC Championships in his tenure. I think he's done a good job with the budget, considering what he has to work with?

I wonder how much having Dr. McDavis played into his role though. We all know McDavis was a huge proponent of using athletics as a way to market the university. And now that McDavis is gone, who knows, Schaus' job might get tougher.

Has anyone got a read on the new president? What's his stance on athletics?

Personally I think best AD in the league resides in Toledo, Ohio, but that's just me. Always constantly getting a pulse on how things are going with folks and keeps the fans and boosters informed rather well. In addition to facility work they do here things are top notch in the 419 with him.

If I had to give a grade to him, I would argue a B+ as well. Definitely very good at having his short lists and definitely took time to thank everyone in the department and at least knew who I was (course that was a scary thing for a lot of folks). Otherwise, yeah hasn't had to make a football hire yet and when that day comes is when I can give him a final grade.

McDavis had a lot to do with that! But Schaus gets an A- from me. Kansas, Penn State, Virginia, Minnesota, Louisville, Tennessee are just some of the schools we've played over the years. Would get an A or A+ if we could get a PAC-12 team on the schedule or a bigger ACC school like Miami, Clemson or Boston College. Would love to travel to Boston or Miami for a game.

I have kind of mixed thoughts on Schaus.

For the two highest profile sports there is room for improvement (especially men's hoops) but they're OK overall.

Football is definitely on solid ground. Really hope a MAC championship is won under his watch.

Men's basketball has been OK but not what I think its full potential could be. The scoreboard in the Convo is a nice achievement.

But if you look at the overall performance of the department as a whole in the MAC on the court/field it's been poor.

Fortunately the average student/fan/Joe has no idea such a thing exists. Our general esteem/perception of success is higher than what these standings present. I love all things Ohio and want the Bobcats to win championships in everything. However some teams simply exist IMHO, with no real ambition to win championships.

The fact that a strong corporate naming rights partner has not been secured is a bit disappointing. I am sure a lot of behind the scenes things have gone down on Richland Avenue that I am not aware of but money drives the ship and it seems like not enough is coming in.

I would give a C for a grade.

Building an 18 hole golf course would be a huge plus. Imagine if basketball had no home games and had to practice on one half of an 84 foot court. That's essentially what our golf teams have for facilities.

From what it sounds like,if this helps ratings,they may look into it for some PGA events.

I was at the Bob Hope event, and I don't believe he actually said that one. I've heard people quote it years later, but I think it's a legend with the same amount of veracity as the claim that Athens is haunted, or that Alan Swank never posts just to stir the pot.

Ask your brother if he remembers Hope actually saying that at the show. I'm fairly sure I would remember it, because it would have been the talk of the town afterwards. I do distinctly remember the bush remark. I suspect the hole joke was a student embellishment that came later. Kind of an extension of his bush joke. Also, if you followed Hope's career, that joke would have been just over a line that he rarely crossed.

But he also said Bob Hope had advance people in Athens a few days before his show to talk to people, so Hope could include "local flavor".
He said he and his friends in ROTC talked to the advance people,and that its possible the joke may have come from there.

Like I posted,my brother remembers it from the show.
But he admits it may have come from talking to Hope's advance people.

rpbobcat, when was your brother in school? Hope actually had at least two shows at Ohio. The one that I remember was in the 1960s. He also performed in Athens in 1977. The one I went to was in Grover Center. Is that the one your brother went to?

OK, so maybe Bob got more explicit in his old age.

Here's a story from the Messenger about his 1963 show. I'm sure there was a more detailed story in The Post.

All this talk about Bob Hope is reminding me of the time he and I shared a short conversation at an o$u football game in the fall of '77 or '78.

This was when I was playing football for Grandview Heights on Friday nights, watching game film the next morning, and then walking over to the horse shoe for a 1 p.m. kickoff with some of my Bobcat teammates. None of us ever had tickets for the o$u games but we always found a way into the stadium. Typically, we ended up talking with a ticket taker at one of the entrances on the east side. The ticket taker lived in Grandview and we would have a short discussion about our game the night before. He would ask us if we had tickets, which he knew we didn't, and then would let us in (all of this usually took place right at or shortly after kickoff).

My buddies and I would walk around the track that used to circle the field and sit in wooden folding chairs or in the stairways. One game, I ended up sitting at the end of the front row of the south-end bleachers. Bob Hope, who was scheduled to dot the I at halftime, came down from the press box with a few minutes left in the first half and sat down next to me. He looked at my Notre Dame ballcap before helping himself to it. He took off his hat (a Fedora, I believe) before putting my hat on his head. He asked me how ND was doing that day and why I wasn't a buckeye fan despite living in Central Ohio.

I don't recall, OCF, if he said anything about the Ohio University golf course.

I've known BobcatSquared since Fall Quarter 1979. That's a long, long time with many highs and lows. I thought I had heard every story - his exploits as a running back for the Grandview Bobcats (Division VI, if OHSAA had such a thing); his alleged date with Mary Robinson (AKA "The Big M"), undoubtedly the most beautiful woman to grace East and New South Greens; his punching of a Read Hall bully; his "straddling" of another man's future wife at a taco bar in Mexico...and many more.

But this is the first time I've heard or read the "Bob Hope Story."

I guess it's time to dust off my Bono tales...
