This must be in regards to the legislation about being allowed to having a 10th assistant coach.

Considering our pay scale, I�m surprised we can get and/or keep anybody good. He has done a very good job IMHO. Plenty of all MAC players.

FWIW, Dave was #810 among assistant football coaches at $94k per ESPN.

For a little comparison, Jesse Wiliams, our ex-defensive line coach is making $175,000 at Kansas while our offensive and defensive coordinators are making $141,000 apiece. Even if Jesse loses his job when the Kansas coach gets fired, he�s probably way ahead of where he would have been if he had stayed, depending on where he lands.

You nailed it Colobobcat. The MAC is dead last in paying asst. coaches and our university doesn't pay well. Colorado State has about 3 million to pay their asst. coaches and Ohio has less than a million. Huge difference in what a coach can provide his family. Marshall pays their asst. coaches almost $250,000 more than Ohio does. Divide that by eight coaches and that is over $30,000 more per coach. That doesn't include facilities like the locker room, coaches offices, weight room, etc. Recruits actually pay attention to those things. Buffalo has asst. coaches being paid over $200,000. The MAC isn't the SEC, Big Ten, or Big 12 but these coaches put in countless number of hours whether they are coaching in Athens or in Austin.

I am not sure how many people out there realize how far the MAC has come in football salaries. I shared this story before that during my teaching and coaching days (the time frame we are talking about here is early 1990s) a couple of fellow coaches turned down MAC football jobs because they were making more money as a high school head coach. Now most MAC assistants make around six figure salaries with coordinators making well above that figure. It has only been in the last 10 years that this has happened.

The big question is why are conferences like the Sun Belt and even some CUSA schools like Marshall throwing away money for ridiculous salaries? Football and basketball are the cash cows that keep most athletic programs afloat, since most other sports programs lose money (in some cases a lot of money) for the universities. The Sun Belt and CUSA are never going to compete against the Power 5 and most Sun Belt and CUSA schools have a hard time competing against us.

Just a point of reference, a middle of the road Conference USA school Middle Tennessee pays both their Offensive and Defensive Coordinators 300,000 a year. Of course, both have Power 5 coordinator experience, so i guess you choose to pay for that.

Rob Ianello at Buffalo made over $200 grand and the DC at Akron makes 200 grand. Miami and Ball State have asst. coaches being paid $20,000 more than Ohio's coordinators. Jeff Mullen former Bobcat coach under Grobe had a salary of almost $200,000. Eastern Michigan has coaches over $150,000. Can't blame these coaches for departing Athens.

I disagree entirely about attracting quality coaches.

What we will struggle to do because of pay is attract experienced guys with decorated resumes. They will command a higher salary. On the flip-side, Ohio is now very well established as an attract job that a quality coach with high career aspirations could step into to and demonstrate their capabilities.

If you know what you're doing on the offensive line, how many jobs are there in D-1 college football you'd feel confident you could step into and win/coach high quality talent on the offensive line. We've consistently been STACKED with talent on the O-Line under Frank. I've got zero doubt we will continue to have the best offensive line in the MAC as long as Frank is running this program. Frank absolutely knows what kind of mind he needs to hire for our offensive line coach.

I've seen crazier things happen.

It seemed like a few years back that nobody was leaving the Bobcat staff. Since the Vanderbilt coaching departures, it is becoming fairly routine. I think the salary scale is putting us at a meaningful disadvantage. That with the upcoming eventual retirement of Frank likely will impact our chances of getting �quality� coaches and keeping them . Don�t see how that�s very debatable.

What to me seems not debatable is that any new staff will more expensive than the current one especially with the position coaches. AD will try to squeeze as much value out of Frank's tenure before he has to deal with it.

I'm not entirely sure how we are judging the best offensive line in the conference. Here's a trivia question: When was the last time OHIO had a first-team All-MAC Offensive lineman? There are five selected every year.

Here's the answer: 2011. That year, Joe Flading and Eric Herman made the first team. Since then, there have six seasons where we have not placed anyone on the first team.

In the last six years, we have had 10 players on the offensive line receive an All-MAC designation, either for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team honors. They are as follows:

2017:
2nd team: Jake Pruehs, Joe Lowery, Joe Anderson

2016:
2nd team: Troy Watson
3rd team: Jake Pruehs

2015:
3rd team: Mike McQueen, Lucas Powell

2014:
3rd team: Lucas Powell

2013:
NONE

2012:
2nd team: Skyler Allen, Eric Herman

In that time, Eric Herman has been drafted. None of our other O-linemen have been drafted. I think it may be a bit presumptuous to assume that we have the best offensive line in the MAC.

So OUr entire left side is second team which should be 1st team next year.

Not sure what games anybody watched last year but it seemed to me the right side planted some people as well....and it and the #1 reserve returns.

Call me presumptuous.....we have the best OLine in the MAC.
